Actually, horse mounted cavalry units would be a VERY good thing in
many parts of Afghanistan.

I knew this girl in junior high that was just absolutely obsessed with horses. Seriously, she had the Black Beauty Trapper Keeper, and cut-outs and stickers of them all over her locker and she drew pictures of them all over her notebooks and stuff. She dropped one of the notebooks in the hallway one day and it was totally her journal. I took it home and read through it. Seriously, I found out that she had some secret boyfriend that lived in another country and she was gonna move there and marry him, only her parents didn't want her to, and she didn't have the money to go on her own so she was going to run away. There was this other part in there about how nobody understood her, but I felt deep down that I did. I totally tried to sneak the journal back into her locker, but the dickhead principal saw me and thought I was stealing shiat from her and he called my parents. They were doubly pissed because they got called the week before when I told Terry Mortimer I was gonna poke him with an infected needle if he didn't bring me a Twix bar every day at lunch. Anyhow, I don't get why girls like horses, but I saw that Equus play once and if that's what goes on in their head, that would explain a lot of unsolved rural animal hate-crimes.

Wasn't there one battle in October 2001 where there was an honest to goodness cavalry charge on actual horses?

This. Not having to worry about fuel logistics and terrain restrictions (at least, not nearly as much) would be really handy in that mountainous craphole.

It's like 1,000 soldiers per bow, and 2,000 per curtsy to other heads of state.

Pretty much this.

At any rate, while I'm very unpleased we're staying in Afghanistan, I'm very pleased at the level of support NATO is offering, both militarily and politically.

Will they be sending any Romanian troops? I'd let her imprison me.

It's been a clusterfark from the day that Dubya decided to re-fight daddy's war in Iraq. That was the day that any moral high ground relating to action in Afghanistan over 9/11 was sniffed firmly up both nostrils.

It'll still be a clusterfark in 10 years time.

/sad

What in the blue hell are you going on about? This is about NATO throwing extra support behind the US in Afghanistan.

The Soviets installed a government too, but I don't think anyone has ever scored their war as a "sucessful invasion". When Ghengis' boys took it, it STAYED took, pretty much up until the Brits got there.

Are we mocking the horse cavalry because it seems antiquated, or because it's ineffective?

Because if it's stupid but it works, it isn't stupid, and you can't breed Strykers.
