Definitely the best headline. +1

Mangino did a lot for us in terms of wins and losses and putting the program on the map (partially because he can be seen from space), but if half the stuff that's come out about him is true, he should have be gone long ago. Let's get someone with a bit of class in here to run this program.

My favorite part is when he lost the Border War.

The article didn't mention it, but it's my favorite part.

Yeah, that was sure some baffling play calling. Not the reason he's gone, but it sure didn't help.

Hey now, that was the first time in their history they won two bowl games in a row. Give them some credit.

I'm not saying he made KU some elite tier USC or Oklahoma type program, but KU's national notoriety, as a football program, has gone way up since he took over - specifically after we started fielding consistently competitive teams (that is, up until a few months ago) and won the Orange bowl.

Lately, Mangino has, unfortunately, put KU under the national spotlight for different reasons - an incomprehensible 7 game skid, players getting into fights, and the recently revealed general coaching douchery during his tenure, which is why he is now (deservedly) gone. Either way though, KU's notoriety as a program has increased under him, which was the only point I was making.

Mangino compiled a 50-48 record in eight seasons. He was two wins away from being the school's all-time winningest coach.

Wow. Fail.

I'm pretty sure Kentucky is the Kentucky of the SEC. And while basketball season is (incredibly) awesome, I feel my point still stands - Mangino was theoretically good for KU as the program improved both in terms of competitiveness and exposure under him, but that ultimately that doesn't make up for what was going on behind the scenes, and thus I am very glad he's been kicked to the curb. Because, seriously, not cool Mangino. Not cool.

You seem to be under the impression that I'm contending that he turned us into a national power or something, and that's not what I'm saying. What I am saying is that when he was hired a 5-7 season would have seemed pretty damn good. If you disagree on any particular point then you must not realize what a truly terrible team we were under Terry Allen.

Responding to Missouri fans, man...don't expect rational answers. The highlight of their season last year was making it one round further than us in the NCAA tournament.

And the irony of Missouri fans bringing up the non-existent brawl between the football and basketball teams this year. If you consider a bunch of people calling each other n*****, pushing and shoving (with one player getting pushed down 6 stairs) then maybe you should look at your own program last year. 2nd in the Fulmer Cup in 2008 (new window)

Oh Missouri, will you ever cease to amuse us?

The best part is how Missouri fans think they are any more relevant in football.

So, relevant in fact, that bowls will be skipping MU in the bowl order. Again, haha.

Fellows: MtHammer: Mangino did a lot for us in terms of wins and losses and putting the program on the map

Er, yea ... one 12-1 season does not "put the program on the map."

Actually, in a lot of ways, it does.

KU has made massive improvements to their football facilities across the board since Mangino got there. New/improved weight rooms, locker rooms, practice field, offices, etc. Plus Memorial has had several renovations (some of it predating Mangino, admittedly), including the most recent approval of adding $34 mil worth of additional luxury box seats, that's going up next year I believe. These things matter a hell of a lot for recruiting, and getting boosters involved.

Again, some of these improvements pre-date Mangino, but a lot of it would have been a tough sell if the football team was still cranking out 2 and 3 win seasons this whole time. Don't underestimate what that Orange Bowl win did to the mindset of KU football fans. It went from "OK, some decent seasons, nice" to "Hey, we might actually be able to do this". People around here were expecting - not hoping, mind you, but expecting - to win the North this year and have a chance at a BCS bowl. You might say "Lol good luck with that", but it says a lot about how far Mangino has helped bring the program that we had that level of expectation.

I don't disagree that Mangino needed to go, the situation had obviously deteriorated past the point of no return, deserved or not. But in 15-20 years, if KU can continue to improve and get their program to one that is a perennial Top 15-caliber one, Mangino should be given a lot of the credit for making that happen.
