The theater managers decided to press charges, so the woman spent two nights in jail and faces up to three years in prison.

Seriously? 2 nights in jail for getting a few minutes of footage on (a digital still camera that also takes short video segments)???

I hope they throw the book at her.

And I hope that book is Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Do people not have functioning "risk vs reward" systems anymore? Or are they all just badly miscalibrated?

Or perhaps it's just the delusion that the Twilight "saga" is worth risking arrest for. If these idiots cracked open a REAL book once in a while, they might learn that you don't have to accept a shiat sandwich just because it's marketed directly to you. There are tastier sammiches, but you won't find them until you develop a more discerning palate.

god i know. luckily angels and demons is out on dvd now so i'm not tempted to risk bootlegging it on my camera phone.

Why would you even pull out a camera in a movie theater? Everybody knows how tough the theaters have gotten on bootleggers. Perhaps the reason she only got 4 minutes of video is because that's all the time it took them to bust her. She might have been intending to record the whole thing.

Really? I haven't heard much about them doing it. If fact I thought most modern bootlegging was done by ripping the promotional DVDs studios send out. Not by some shaky cam quality recording of a projection screen at the theater.

That vampire movie with Keanu Reeves was pretty cool. I remember going with my boss's daughter and she totally got turned on during the freaky four-way scene. She grabbed my and and dragged me out of the theater and back to her house 'cuz her dad wasn't home and she wanted to do stuff, which I was all for, except her dog kept staring at me and I totally told her we had to lock the dog out and she threw me out because she loved that dog. I got so mad that I totally watermeloned her mailbox, and I think her dad might've seen me because I got fired 3 day later. They said it was because I kept eating other people's lunches from the fridge, but I would't eat that shiat...who the fark reheats leftover Thai seafood? Christ, I would rather have my nose ripped off with pliers than deal with smelling that office anymore anyway. I got a better job, and now when I see that girl, I totally tell everyone around I did it with her in the butt. Thanks Ted "Theodore" Logan!

I'd imagine a promotional DVD would be the ideal way to rip a bootleg, but those are hard to come by unless you've got some serious media connections. Also, those DVDs have security watermarks hidden in the video, which makes any copies easily traceable back to the source.

The handheld camcorder was (at one time) the most popular method of ripping a film. I've read that most large movie theaters now routinely have employees who stand behind the screen and scan the audience looking for anyone with a camera. After all, the theaters have a strong financial incentive in preventing bootlegging - they want to sell tickets and $5 bags of popcorn and fill the seats.

My digital still camera takes up to 4 hours of video, depending on the resolution, FPS and memory card used.

Didn't pee-wee Herman expose his wee pee-pee in a movie theatre and only have the judge slap his pee-pee?

Let's all leave one-star reviews and angry, semi-coherent rants about how the managerial staff deserve to be raped by over-amorous wild bovines.

Because, frankly, three years in prison for taping four minutes of footage before a movie comes on, on a device that couldn't even contain the movie, is abuse of copyright law in its purest form.

Managers saw the woman taping and called the police, who examined the camera

Can somebody remind me again why these dickless shiatbags at the MPAA get to waste public police resources to enforce civil actions between private parties?

Not sure if serious, but...

1) If it was a still digital camera that also took grainy bad video, how could you fit the whole thing on what I imagine is probably an 4 gig or less sim card?

2)Why would you start taping during the previews and ads?

3)Why the hell would you try to bootleg a movie with a shiatty still camera with shiatty video?

4) Why the hell would anyone try to intentionally tape Twilight? (snert)

5) Who is everyody in your post, Ive never heard a warning about cameras in a theater and have never seen a manager yank anyone out of the theater because of one.

I lived in NY so I can see where they may have a problem with actual bootleggers (I used see them hawking their wares on every other street corner)but the theater assholes need to use some common sense when it comes to a girl taking shots of her sister's 29th birthday.
