HAHAHAHAHAHA!

/oh wait, you were serious?!?

2009-12-03 03:08:31 PM
I understand that they can claim a right to tax purchases, but their voluntary tax also include shipping costs? They can suck it.

2009-12-03 04:22:37 PM
Isn't the power to tax interstate commerce held exclusively by the federal government?

2009-12-03 04:46:00 PM
I'll get right on that just as soon as I finish feeding my unicorn.

2009-12-03 04:46:46 PM
So does California.... They can shove their sales tax.

2009-12-03 04:46:52 PM
I bet processing those forms is going to be an easy job. Probably a good way to identify the stupid, since they'll then have names and addresses.

2009-12-03 04:47:14 PM
They are not alone, check your state's tax requirements as well. Massachusetts tries to strongarm you into accepting a "typical" internet purchase amount, which I believe is approximately $500, thus resulting in $25 sales tax (at least it was when we had a 5% rate). If you put in your own amount, namely $0, then they suggested your return may be reviewed. I gave them a big FU and put $0 anyway.

2009-12-03 04:47:19 PM
I actually returned hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of goods that I bought on the internet a few years ago so I'm actually going to need all that tax money in a refund.

2009-12-03 04:48:01 PM
Riiiight. I know a lot of waiters and waitresses who claim ALL their tips too.

I believe all the states want that, at least in theory.

Only if you listen to the constitution, and nobody pays attention to THAT ratty thing anymore.

Actually, it's regulate. That allows a different set of guidelines. They could tax, but unless they say states can't, states can tax purchasers on the final goods. States cannot charge a tariff or anything like that, but sales tax is legal.

But just try enforcing it, suckers!

Shirly they can't be serious

You can live here, but why anybody would want to is beyond me.

lol! I bet it sucks to live in a state that collects income tax.

2009-12-03 04:52:48 PM
The state of Nebraska wants to remind you that in their eyes, you can't do a single goddamned thing ever without giving money to the government.

Of course, Nebraska is tragically not unique in thinking this.

Ummm, I think they're serious. And don't call them Shirly.

The people of this nation would like to remind the States that they need to stand up for their rights and tell the Federal government to pull their dick out of our collective asses.

THEN we can start talking about services. vs. taxes.

Otherwise, keep on taxing -- you'll get your historical reminder in due time.

2009-12-03 04:54:23 PM
Riiiiight. Just like I'm supposed to declare my out-of-state tobacco shipments to my state government.

2009-12-03 04:54:33 PM
Move to Delaware, and then pay our 0.0% sales tax.

/bwahahaha

2009-12-03 04:54:49 PM
The Florida Department of Revenue would also like citizens to remit the appropriate sales tax on mail-order* purchases. I wonder what is the rate of compliance?

*showing my age, you whipper-snappers have probably never bought anything by putting an order form into an actual physical envelope and sending it to the vendor by the U.S. Mail.

California does it for stores that are based in California.

California did this too, last time I paid taxes there. I am pretty sure Nebraska isn't alone in this.

2009-12-03 04:57:56 PM
Where are all those Farkers who said they feel patriotic when they pay their taxes? How many of them live in Nebraska? How many of them actually declare all their internet purchases?

/Live in a state with no income tax.
//But the sales tax in my county is over 9%

Nah, I'll just drive there from Pennsylvania to reap the benefits.

Could be worse; my state actually expects people to pay "use tax" on stuff they buy and consume out of state at a lower rate than in-state. (For example: if restaurant tax is 6 percent here and 5 percent over the state line, and you eat in the 5-percent restaurant, they actually have the gall to expect you to pay the extra one percent.)

Who besides Ned Flanders actually DOES this?

Most states do this. It's called a "use" tax. It's meant to--among other things--protect in-state businesses from "unfair" competition from neighboring states with lower or no sales tax. For example, Delaware has no sales tax and takes business away from PA, MD, NJ companies quite frequently.

In theory it makes sense. But they can all still suck it as far as I'm concerned.

Just put the money you would pay in taxes in savings. Or in a safe in the form of cash. Then if you get caught, you'll be fine. Nothing to worry about at all.
