Beyonce is a talented singer and an incredible performer but damn, I absolutely hate her music. Has she ever done a song that won't be completely irrelevant in 5 years? I can't think of any. She deserves to have at least 1 hit that will become a classic. Otherwise she'll have the same kind of "legacy" as Britney Spears, albeit more talented and less crazy.

Lloyd Braun: Silversun Pickups nominated as best new artist?

lol wut. I was confused, I thought there was no way. Silversun Pickups AND MGMT nominated for best new artist? Welcome to 2007, Grammy committee. Carnavas may not have been the biggest album of the year, but they had a hit and sold 350,000 copies and it was THREE YEARS AGO! What the hell does NEW mean? "We just now got around to listening to them, so technically, it's new to us!" These people have an iTunes playlist that just alternates between "Single Ladies" and "Poker Face".

"New" to AMPAS only means "we haven't nominated them for anything yet."

Fountains of Wayne got nominated for BNA when "Stacy's Mom" got popular, which was on their third album.

Aracnix: Say what you like about how useless and irrelevant this crap is, "Single Ladies" makes me want to dance. Or, at least, wish that I could.

Yeah, and that's fine. But song of the year? Really? It's one thing if radio stations want to play this thoughtless garbage around the clock to appeal to the masses, but it would be nice if the committee would listen to music that required actual talent and attempts to an art form.

I never really paid attention to the Grammy nominations until this year, and I won't again next year because this is a farking joke.

Both Julia Fischer and Anne Sophie Mutter had pretty good Bach albums this year, but no nominations for either?

I guess the people in charge are getting tired of violinists after Hilary Hahn managed to make Arnold Schoenberg sound good last year (and then didn't have a new album this year).

I usually don't care for Mutter, but Fischer's Bach is always a treat.

Asking RS for any kind of journalistic accuracy about any music that came after the Baby Boomer era is like asking your grandmother to program your Tivo box. Ain't gonna happen. (But they will happily tell you that Sgt Peppers was the bestest album of all time.)

Has there been a single song in the past ten years that will be remembered by anyone in the next decade? If so, it won't be anything from any of the derivative pop garbage genre.

And you know what? I blame the Beatles. Sure, they wrote memorable music with a little bit of substance to it, but they (and Elvis) kicked off the idea that American and British folk music is about selling a brand instead of making art. Now every vapid moron thinks she deserves to be a star, and the sad thing is that with the right sort of marketing, most of them could be.

Every Sunday night on NPR, I listen to a short radio program called "Piano Puzzlers" where a guy plays a popular song in the style of a famous composer. This works because the famous composers actually wrote music. You can listen to something Beethoven didn't write and still tell that it's a song from a musical done in the style of a Beethoven piano sonata, because while Beethoven wrote a huge variety of stuff (a range pop "musicians" today don't even aspire to reach), he still had his own characteristic style in certain genres like the sonata.

Contrast with pop divas. Half Most of their songs don't even have music in the background, substituting instead some electronic noise loop with a drum machine. The most recent trend is to do away even with the singing, leaving... what, exactly? If I wanted to write a song in the style of Beyonce, how could I? There's no style to emulate. It's just repetitive junk with some electronically altered warbling of bad poetry.

How do these hacks make money? They make money by selling a brand ("Disney Pop Diva #234") to young brainless girls, who never learn to appreciate real music. This makes it possible to market further musical excrement to them as they get older, since they never learn that there is better stuff out there. Is there another explanation?

I can't even just ignore the situation, because I have to hear this stuff every time I go into Barnes & Noble or the grocery store. It sickens me.

Go to YouTube, type "Single Ladies" in the search box, then look at how many people don't "give a rat's ass" about that video. Love her or hate her, it's a pretty awesome video and that song is one of the catchiest pop songs to come out in a while.

It's an awful video. The only reason that there are so many copies of it are because it's so easy to duplicate. I've ranted on that video before, but I'll sum it up as this: it has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. The only one thing would have made it impressive without changing it would have been if it were a continuous shot from start to finish and it even fails there.

A Day in the Life
and Strawberry Fields Forever have little substance and aren't art? Seriously? They practically legitimized rock music as an art form instead of just some fad music that only teenagers listened to.

Maybe they just made the problem worse.

I mean to emphasize, though, that unlike the pop music of today, their music had at least something to it (at least post-Rubber Soul). I don't find myself wanting to break something when I hear a Beatles song when I'm in a store. I cannot say the same thing about anything popular today.

Beatlemania marked the beginning of throngs of screaming musical idiots worshiping an image rather than a performance, and it was entirely a coincidence that the Beatles managed to write some good songs. They were beloved even before Revolver, but I wouldn't call any of their early stuff art. Most of it doesn't even qualify as good.

They're an easy target because no band before or since has been as popular as the Beatles, but I do think their ultimate effect on music has been negative (through no real fault of their own).
