Red Planet:

Hi point: Carrie-Anne Moss nekkid.
Low point: Crew of multibillion-dollar mission creating moonshine onboard a spacecraft, jeopardizing the entire mission.

Mission to Mars: Why did Gary Sinise wax his eyebrows?

I don't think it makes people stupid, so much as inexplicably boring.

/if we're basing it on those two movies

"It's hard to top a Roland Emmerich disaster flick for bad science..."

Maybe that's because they're more "disaster" and less "science" by design? He's this generation's Irwin Allen.

And how did The Day the Earth Stood Still slip through the criteria?

An embarassment of riches.

AMC used to mean "American Movie Classics." I recently saw them airing the recent Starsky and Hutch remake. Therefore I see no reason why any ranking list of theirs should be taken seriously.

Mission to Mars was considerably worse than Red Planet. Note that this does not mean Red Planet was a good movie.

This is a decent list. Why the hate for Scalzi?

I kind of liked AvP 1. Sure it was mindless and trite, but it was better than Alien: Resurrection.

I saw all but The Core (obviously stupid premise), Doom (wasn't a fan of the game), & the two Mars movies (word of mouth spared me from either of those). But I have to say that I cannot argue with anything on the list.

But it *is* missing a few:

AI
The Day the Earth Stood Still remake (I *still* haven't forgiven my husband for dragging me to that one)
Planet of the Apes remake

2009-12-03 11:35:56 AM
The Core is awesome.
"What do you call this element?"
"Its real name has 32 syllables, but I call it 'Unobtainium.'"

Exactly. I fail to see how Steven Seagal: Lawman, Dog the Bounty Hunter, and CSI: Miami are either Arts or Entertainment.

Hell, even The Weather Channel is showing movies now. I saw an ad for Wizard of Oz as one of their "Weather-related" movies.

True. I love Breaking Bad...but I still haven't seen Mad Men.

Mission to Mars belongs on the worst movies in general of the decade list. Any movie where Dr. Pepper™ is crucial to the crew's survival is farking retarded.

The Ten Worst SciFi Blockbusters

blockbuster (n) an unusually successful hit with widespread popularity and huge sales (especially a movie or play or recording or novel)

Half the movies on that list either lost money (in a couple of cases a lot of money) or barely managed to cover their budget with their worldwide gross.

Low point for me in Red Planet was the end where, when Carrie-Anne Moss was trying to resuscitate Kilmer's character and asked what to do next, the computer replied "Stand him up."

In zero gravity.

There is no "up".

Revenge of the Sith should be on that list solely for the "Hold me like you did by the lake on Naboo" line.

Say what you will about that movie, but that sequence at the end with Yoda was f*cking awesome.

Granted, we had to sit through all that garbage to get there, but still.

Ordinarily, I try to stay out of "this was awesome/no wai, it wasn't awesome!" arguments, since I usually find it ridiculous to argue about enjoyment of something from person to person.

However, in this case, allow me to register a "NO WAI," sir. That is, if you are indeed referring to the scene where CGI Spinning Yoda attacks Space Saruman. To me, it was a further low point to that horrible farking movie rather than something that would have justified sitting through it.

Scalzi makes me laugh, and his books are clever and entertaining. Did he come over to your house and eat all your turkey on Thanksgiving or something?

Disagree: Riddick and Doom. Love them. Don't know why.

I bet Gamer Grrrl has attended a sci fi convention and has first-hand experience.

/What's your opinion of Doctorow?

2009-12-03 03:27:14 PM
I agree about the spinning CGI Yoda. From seeing him in ESB I always assumed his Jedi powers were above 9000 and he could pretty much kill someone with his brain. I liked the Yoda on the Clone Wars cartoon much better, where he was shown basically tossing Trade Alliance ships around with a wave of his hands. The Prequels just killed the picture I had in my head of Yoda being such a badass he didn't even need a light saber to end you.

2009-12-03 03:27:15 PM
Those are all pretty bad movies. I've seen them all but AVP2 and Doom. Man, I suck. It doesn't make it any better that I caught most of them online or on TV, either. I've got a thing for watching brainless movies on certain nights, but I'm not proud of it. It hurts my soul. Æon Flux was probably in the top 5 worst movies I have ever seen. The sad thing is, I knew just about all these things would suck before I even saw them. But that didn't stop me. Hell, just tonight I downloaded and viewed Wolverine. Oh, god, someone get me the help I need.

I really wish my husband would stop watching all 3 of those. I have had more than my fill of Dog and Beth and the gang lately. And while I appreciate the art of aikido, Stevel Seagal's voice makes me want to lash out violently and irrationally.

Mission to Mars is the ONLY movie I've ever seen my wife stand up during the credits and say, "Well that sucked!".

I think the problem with Terminator and Aliens/Predator movies is that the originals were so badass and cool, there's no way any movie could make up for that.

I'm pretty sure a movie set in Ancient Greece doesn't count as science fiction.

vygramul: I bet Gamer Grrrl has attended a sci fi convention and has first-hand experience.

Nah, the only con I've ever been to is GenCon, and Scalzi doesn't think that's an appropriate venue for his books for some reason. But I have corresponded with him via email a few times, and he seems to be a nice guy.

/What's your opinion of Doctorow?

I've only read Little Brother, which I thought was great. My husband's read a couple of his non-fiction books and liked them. Doctorow seems to have his head screwed on straight regarding digital media, but other than that, I have no opinion of him personality-wise.
