No surprise there.

Maybe it's just your acting, guy?

Ian McKellen seems to do just fine for himself.

Personally, I blame the Inspector Gadget movie.

I think only Mr. T was able to overcome the shame of that project completely and move the hell on.

I think it was a turd called "The Next Best Thing," in addition to a ton of bad plastic surgery, that "ruined" your career.

...and when you have a plum voiceover role in a blockbuster franchise like Shrek, I'm sure you're not hurting financially.

MOTHERFARKING OUCH.

Damn.

I winced as soon as I read that title. I completely blocked the painful commercials from memory... but not as completely as I would've hoped.

His career hasn't been the same since Madonna stopped being friends with him.

2009-12-02 09:56:16 PM
Uh, Rupe, the fact that you've had so much plastic surgery that you're completely unrecognizable is probably a bigger factor in your lack of work.

Also, you were a voice in one of the Shrek movies. Most out gay actors in Hollywood would absolutely kill for that "lack of work." Hell, most actors, period.

To be fair, he doesn't really play "leading man" roles.

I think Everett's point is that directors are hesitant to cast openly gay actors in a roles where they would have to play half of a heterosexual couples.

There are obvious exceptions, like Neil Patrick Harris playing a womanizer on How I Met Your Mother, but Everett is probably right for the most part. It's also been pointed out the NPH is sort of playing a caricature of a straight man, so his sexuality is part of the joke. He's essentially doing "straight face."

On the other hand, I could see gay actors having a problem with straight actors playing gay characters to gain artistic cred when the parts could easily go to gay actors. Or for that matter, Charlize Theron gaining weight and making herself look like shiat took a great part from an ugly actress.

Crap, I think I forgot what point I was trying to make. More movies should have black face?

Actually, it was the plastic surgery. And Everett not realizing that very few people have a constant career in Hollywood and most of them have family relations that insure it. Or simply pull in a lot of cash that keeps them employed, which acting quality doesn't necessarily play a role in.

Having a career in Hollywood is easy. Having a successful career is not. Being someone who pulls millions for films while headlining them is even more difficult. Just take your cash and go and invest wisely. Many more talented people have had half the career he has (if that). It's just the nature of the beast.

Blacks and Asians get pissed about that shiat but not the gays.

Almost all actors age gay anyway.

Gay Young Professional without Persecution Complex offers : Maybe you're just a shiat actor.

Even NPH can land 3-minute FunnyOrDie clips without having previously been Dr. Claw.

Mr. Everett, the responsible thing to do is to keep your mouth shut and let talented entertainers come out on their own, so that they can reach their full actualization as artists on their own terms. Just because you blew your career doesn't mean you need to blow everyone else's... never mind.

I was not aware he was gay until I read this article. There goes his shot at the lead in my major motion picture. It's about a quarterback who is secretly a ginger wizard.

Gee, crybaby, if 50 movies and TV shows is a ruined career, what would a non-ruined career have looked like? You're a good actor and all that, but gay or not, you're no Lawrence Olivier, OK?

2009-12-02 11:44:59 PM
Sorry but yeah if people know your gay your pidgenholing yourself in Hollywood.

Neil Patrick Harris and Ian McKellan are the rare exceptions to this rule. NPH because hes charming as hell and Ian because hes that good a classical actor.

Kevin Spacey has long been rumored to be a closet case. Hed be retarded to come out if it's true. His entire career has been spent playing the everyman character, Hollywood would be loathe to cast him in those roles as an openly gay man. And I say this as a straight man with a huge mancrush on Kevin Spacey.

Its just a fact, knowing too much about an actor before seeing them in a role affects your perception of their work. Tom Cruise has become problematic for this reason. He's a charismatic actor but the viewing public now sees him as a raving nutball due to his scientology binge and his odd behavior.

Still as several others have pointed out Rupert isn't exactly a starving actor, for a guy who's destroyed his career he's doing alright.

As someone who just watched Another Country last night, I am really getting a kick out of this replies....
I always thought part of his problem was that he is a gay version of Hugh Grant: floppy hair, public school voice, puppy-dog look and so on.

sweeneytoad
Colin Firth probably is the best Darcey, but I don't like that adaptation as a whole: it's too good. So close to the original it is a almost boring.

Pee-Wee Herman can pull off the "I meant to do that" defense. Not too many others can, and certainly not you or the retards you're defending. If you "here" a whoosh it's proably just a blast of fetid air escaping after several days trapped in your yeasty vagina.

I see your point, and totally understand I do tend to skip some parts when I watch), but I *despise* the Kiera version. Often "reworking" classics goes bad (imo)..except Sense and Sensibility - I LOVED what Thompson did with that one (having Rickman in it helped too)

The Kiera version got a lot of flak, and much of it was deserved, I suppose. I liked the actress who played the ditzy sister (Lydia?), as I thought she really brought out the pure idiocy of that character, and the mother was good. "Nice-but-dim" Mr Bingley was spot on, too. For me, the Kiera version was a fun, wistful adaptation, and enjoyable for that, but it was not especially good in the sense of being accurate.
Oh, I I should own up to liking Kiera Knightley :-)

Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility is lined up to watch; got the DVD last time I was back home.
For a truly bizarre (and disappointing) version of Pride and Prejudice, watch the Bollywood version with Aishwariya Rai, Bride and Prejudice. Disappointing, because I think Jane Austen's late 18th/early 19th century large middle class social climbing family could have translated brilliantly to modern-day India.

THIS. Rupert is an ass and was never destined for anything more then sharing a movie or two with Madonna. He is just putting the blame on something other than his inability to actually act.

I enjoy him but I never really saw him as leading man material. He's a decent actor, sure, but I never saw the magnetism.

You're early. And why
are you wearing a tux?

EVERETT
I'm your waiter.
I understand you're looking
for a rather unpleasant
yet strangely alluring doctor
for an American television show.

AGENT
They just picked up Hugh Laurie.
He can do strangely unpleasant,
which is close enough.
And he can do it with an American accent.
Where's my bread? Why do the other tables have bread?

EVERETT
They're microwaving it now.
Does it have to be American?
Can't we just tell them I'm well-educated?

AGENT
No. Look, the Hugh Laurie look
is working for you, but you need
to go a little bolder. Why don't you
grow a twirly moustache and dye your hair,
and we'll see if we can't get you on Robot Chicken.
You kmow, if I don't tip you, we're even, right?
