Two things that would immediately improve education in this country:

1) Take the Department of Education out behind the Capitol and shoot it in the head. Then bury it, cement the plot, and landmine the surround.

2) Fire every elected school board in the country.

This illustrates point 2.

Well if the school board would just pay more attention to me, we wouldn't need counseling. And would it really hurt to say "I love you" every now and again? God...if it wasn't for the kids, I'd be packing my bags already.

2009-12-02 06:11:40 PM
Jeannie Kaplan says she and other board members need time to talk to each other privately. No. Never. Inexcusable.

If you let school board members "talk to each other privately" you might as well sign over every constitutional right you've ever had.

School boards are occupied by the dumbest people in our society, and they don't have your kids' or your best interests in mind. EVER.

If I had my way I would cut the budget of every school district by 80%. Money does not equal education, but it does equal waste and fraud.

In Dallas (DISD) there are more 'administrators' then there are teachers.

Oh and if anyone wants to know the rates at Broadmoor, they're all over the place depending on the season and room - $210 to $1485, for what I've looked at so far.

Yes it's near Cheyenne Zoo. A zoo where the animals do horrible things to each other. I guess they do that at all zoos. But the mountain-scaping makes it a more intimate experience when you see a monkey forcefully dig a booger out of another monkey's nose and eat it.

Really now. Let's analyze that.

There are, in Dallas ISD, about 35 high schools. Take the average enrollment of those schools as being at 1500. Some are higher, some are lower - let's average at 1500.

That makes 1500x35 or 52,500 students enrolled in high school in Dallas ISD. Extrapolate those numbers over the rest of grades and you get about 170,000 students in DISD. (52,500/4 grades * 13 grades, obviously not counting pre-k)

State law in Texas requires teacher loads of no higher than 1:32 for secondary. For primary, it's 1:18. Let's assume that for sake of argument there is one teacher to every 30 students in DISD.

That means there are approximately 5,687 teachers in Dallas.

You're saying there are about *six thousand* adminstrators in DISD? Either you're (1) full of crap, (2) have no idea what you're talking about, or (3) resorting to hyperbole to make a point.

Which is it?

While I have some issues with the Cato Institute, they outline some very interesting research on one likely reason why public schools suck so incredibly hard in this country:

The nonteaching bureaucracy has mushroomed; it grew by 500 percent between 1960 and 1984. Over the same period, the number of teachers and principals grew by a comparatively puny 57 percent and 79 percent, respectively.(11)

The situation is markedly different for America's independent schools. For example, in 1987, while there were 3,300 employees in the central and district offices of the Chicago public school system, a mere 36 administrators oversaw the schools of the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, although its student population is 40 percent of that of the public schools and it serves a much larger geographical area.(12) In the nation's largest school district, New York City, John Chubb of the Brookings Institution found an even more striking contrast: 6,000 administrators in the government schools and only 25 in the Catholic schools, although the Catholic schools served about one-fourth the number of students the government schools did.(13) Evidence on that point continues to mount; just recently, the Baltimore Sun reported that the Baltimore Archdiocese manages 34,000 students in 101 schools with 7 administrators, while the nearby Harford County public schools need 64 administrators to oversee 36,000 students in 51 schools.(14)

Massive school bureaucracies divert scarce resources from real educational activities, deprive principals and teachers of any opportunity for authority and independence, and create an impenetrable bulwark against citizen efforts to change the school system. The school systems have become susceptible to influence only from special-interest groups, notably the teachers' unions and other elements of the education establishment. Like factories of the former Soviet Union, America's government schools are technologically backward, overstaffed, inflexible, unresponsive to consumer demand, and operated for the convenience of top- level bureaucrats.
It's an interesting read, even if it is quite dated now - I'd imagine it's probably only gotten worse.
