If you were one of the idiots who jumped on the Deepak Chopra bandwagon a decade ago, you should be ashamed of yourself and be forced to do some sort of community service.

And if you're one of the dipshiats who subscribes to "The Secret" or "What the BLEEP Do We Know," you should be killed if you're not prepared to atone for what you've done.

Stupidest things I've ever read. Entertaining? Yes. Stupid? OFF THE FARKING CHARTS, but only because these people actually believe their own bullshiat.

I think the late great U. Utah Phillips said it best (and I think he might've stolen this quote from someone else):

My (ex) wife thought What the BLEEP do we know was... deep. I watched it with here, on her urging, and was snickering less then a minute in. I explained that quantum physics doesn't work that way, but she was quite adamant that it was science. Queue the "Science doesn't WORK that way!" pic.

Deepak Chopra is one of those morons who learns a little bit about complicated topics, then tries to pepper in some pseudo-philosophical bullshiat to try and make up for his lack of a complete understanding of the subject at hand.

It's farking irritating. I used to have a friend who would do that and I wanted to punch him in the face every time.

ecmoRandomNumbers: And if you're one of the dipshiats who subscribes to "The Secret"... you should be killed if you're not prepared to atone for what you've done...

Ugh... At the urging of my mother and my wife I finally broke down and started to read The Secret, and had to give up before I got halfway through. Classic New Age tripe: hardback, wide margins, 30 worlds to a page, too many fonts, etc.

And on top of that, it reads like an infomercial for itself... it never gets down to brass tacks and actually says anything.

"Without God would there be no love? In my confusion I found someone who made it clear. Someone who had thought about this topic a lot. Now at this point I knew a little bit of science but not a lot, and that made me the perfect candidate for Deepak Chopra.

I was so intrigued with this quantum mechanics that Deepak refers to over and over and over again in his books, that I decided to take a class in it.

And what I found is- Deepak Chopra is full of shiat!"

Pandering to both science AND religion?

2009-12-02 07:11:55 PM
Sadly, there's a lot of money to be made from people who haven't rejected science utterly, but know little about it and are thus vulnerable to judicious use of pseudo-scientific language. Hence, "What the BLEEP Do We Know" etc.

Sadly, my own GF seems to define "skepticism" as "crossed-arms negativity", though I admit the general tone of The Skeptical Inquirer magazine (which I occasionally enjoy) does tend to lean that way. But that is not what the word actually means.

2009-12-02 07:12:00 PM
The disturbing thing is not that this idiot exists. The disturbing thing is that he has a lot of followers who actually believe this shiat. I just watched Richard Dawkins' "Enemies of Reason" (this douchebag gets interviewed, among others) on youtube, and the mind boggles.

This stuff makes me think that this whole democracy thing might be a stunningly bad idea in the long term ...

Phil Plait doesn't like the HuffPo because of the woo-woo stuff they publish, that's fine, I don't like HuffPo either. I'm still trying to figure out if Plait has stopped going on Coast to Coast AM, where 99% of the nations woo-woos go to speak of anti-vax stiff, anti-agw, homeopathy, numerology, astrology, and all sorts of crap that Plait would seem to hate.

2009-12-02 07:17:29 PM
Deepak Chopra is merely the newest incarnation of this subtle creep toward accepting the scientific concept or theory made accessible and without depth. The tiny sliver of legitimacy is all such need to peddle snake oil because the majority simply do not understand how science works and thus could not be expected to understand why Chopra, his ilk, the zealous, etc., are absurdly inaccurate.

Oddly, enough such salesmen and faithful exist to create a community to vigorously defend itself until the tiny sliver becomes a splinter, annoying those salesmen who somehow turn against the very methodology from which they stole legitimacy.

How do we know what we know, how did we know we were wrong, and how do we know what we do not know? Science. A great man once said, "Science, it works biatches."

TheyCallThisWork: I think he's using the word "skeptic" to mean "anyone who doesn't agree with my bullshiat."

"Skeptic" has become such a venomous word, but I believe this is because skeptic has become stolen, in much the same way scientific terminology is by snake oil peddlers, for those who want to preach nonsense but from a combative stance. Hence we have vaccination, 9/11, global warming, etc., "skeptics" who are not skeptical of certain aspects, which is absolutely acceptable, but outright deny the entirety. "Skeptic" is a label with legitimacy whereas "conspiracy theorist" is one which denotes paranoia.

In my experience the word 'skeptic' mostly has a good reputation. That's why climate change denialists like to call themselves skeptics, they're leeching off of the reputation of the word.

It doesn't have a good reputation amongst new age woo-sters though, because to them it's synonymous with 'people who expose our bullshiat'.
