Northern Baltimore Maryland on the lookout here. Parkville to Hunt Valley to Essex and everywhere in between hopefully. On the look out for used cars and red balloons.

Imperialism: I bet DARPA labels balloons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 and people go crazy looking for the non-existent #7.

On a serious note, you know some asshat is going to send punkrockgirl some false coordinates, so how are we going to verify what we get? Are we only allowed one guess or what?

From the FAQ you can submit more then 1 entry of 10 balloons, but it would be hard to separate out the 1 bad coord from the 11 Cords emailed.

My suggestion is a photo of the DARPA truck, Photo of the DARPA ID, Photo of Ballon with the coordinates. Evan a crappy camra phone should be ok.

punkrockgirl, how about you invite a FEW regulars from the photoshop contests, giv'em a few photos, and have them go crazy submitting fakes to 4chan and everyone else?

When Farkers begin bragging and sending out pics of the balloons we find, remember to scrub the EXIF data out before uploading, if youre using a cameraphone with GPS functionality!

In less geeky terms, phones with GPS capability, like iPhones, can insert meta-data like GPS coordinates into pictures invisibly. I predict at least one balloons location will be given away due to this.

I'm going to laugh if some jackass starts a group randomly putting up look-a-like balloons all over the country.

Too much work. Lets photoshop some pictures and flood Twitter with those sightings.

netweavr: Wouldn't it be easier to look for the US Gov't vehicles now? I mean they have to already be moving to the locations for the balloons to be placed. So if you live in a small town and notice a Fed car, it's a pretty big hint.

Actually, what you want to do is identify locations of DARPA offices or known support contractor locations. You can bet that the budget for this stunt is rather small, so the travel budget to set these things up is going to be equally small.

Find out where they are, find some Farkers near there and have them drive around on Sat. You'd probabaly find a fair few that way.

The website says the balloons will be in the continental U.S. instead of contiguous which means they might put one in Alaska. Anybody got Alaska?

Being that the balloons will only be up for 6 - 9 hours why do they give us over a week to submit.

Not that I care just wondering

Trenton-area NJ - will keep an eye out.

I'll be driving from Tallahassee to Washington D.C. on the 12th. If I see a balloon I'll make sure to share it.

Is it cheating if I follow all the cars away from DARPA? I park about 2 blocks from their HQ in Virginia.

Because part of it is to see how people share the info amongst their networks. Obviously, no one person is going to find all ten.

We should make a checklist of areas to check
Given that DARPA is Dept of Defense R&D. I'd keep an eye out in around:

1.DARPA Offices
2.Goverment R&D locations both DOD and DOE (both current and defunct)
3.Army Base Locations
4.University Campuses with large research grants
5.National Parks
6.Notable Internet Locations

So I can think of
Arlington, Virginia (obvious)
DARPA field offices
Albuquerque
Santa Fe
New Mexico in general and national Parks in the vicinity
Livermore, Stanford, Alza, San Fran and pretty much all that area around Silicon Valley
El Paso
MIT/Harv./Cambridge, MA
Argonne & the University of Chicago
Tampa/St. Pete area(Pinellas Lab used to be around there)
Plus any Lockheed Martin/Boeing offices/Facilities.

Seems like the fark "Account created" date would be a good initial trusted agent factor. Not that there isn't crossover between fark and SA or 4chan or whatever, but someone who joined fark say, now, would be a little suspect.

Also, any farkers flying places on Saturday should maybe grab a window seat...

DARPA may be evil, but this is kind of a neat experiment to ponder. Wonder if the use of social networking in the Iranian uprising is the instigating hypotheses.

Since this whole thing is for the internets' 40th birthday I'd say that you're probably on to something with the notable internet locations. The current and/or former locations of MAE East, UCLA, Stanford, University of Utah, MIT, Al Gore' house (hey, DARPA has a sense of humor, too!), stuff like that.

Just a thought, but head for the hills if you really want to help. Here in norcal, there's a summit nearby that gives a 360 degree view on a clear day. There are two more 40 and 70 miles NE and E respectively. For an investment of about six hours I can cover roughly 1000 sq. mi. by line of sight with some binocs.

It would be so cool if Fark won this. I'd like that.

missmarsha: do we have someone to monitor the twitter?

I've written a script using jQuery and the Twitter OAUTH API to perform searches, etc and log the results in a db for further action.

I'll see what I can do to make it find gps coordinates.
