I bet DARPA labels balloons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 and people go crazy looking for the non-existent #7.

On a serious note, you know some asshat is going to send punkrockgirl some false coordinates, so how are we going to verify what we get? Are we only allowed one guess or what?

DaBishop so clever. you are the one who is clearly not a useful adult and are most likely some dimwitted marketing slave who thinks a fun afternoon is blowing an entire paycheck at the mall to buy your inbred relatives a bunch of cheaply made overpriced garbage to play with or decorate themselves with. but continue with your sex-based-insult synonym generator if you wish.

you all really believe toys for tots is the best use for 40,000 farking dollars? thats pretty damned sad if it's true. better off giving $100 to 400 poor families. or, you know, a good charity.

i'm simply requesting a meaningful charity you idiot.

your repeated use of your elder tone insult approach, while successfully annoying, is a dead giveaway to the fact that you are either mentally slow or a juvenile yourself. so get lost or address the fact that there is far better that can be done with that sum than promoting materialism, reliance on others, greed and envy all while lining the pockets of foreign manufacturers.

This is a feel good thing in a time when there's not a lot of feel good.

Don't be self righteous. It honestly makes you look really, really bad. I guess you don't care, being that you're all morally superior and everyone else is clearly scum and all.. but still.

Really, you're making yourself look extremely bad.

One of the car lots I have an account with has these balloons, they use them during sales. It would not be hard to convince then to put one up. :) It also would not be hard to duplicate the flag on them.

If anyone want to do this, check for auto dealer supply in your area. They sell these for $40 to $50. Just remember if you do it, to email our team leader to tell her to disregard any reports of that one. Do it before the start so she knows it is not a false-negative-positive...... is that right? Either way you know what I mean.

No idea if i'll be near Houston or DFW area on Saturday, but i'm in.

Just a thought, but for those of you without GPS equipment - i'm going out on a limb here and guessing that the DARPA guy at the bottom of each balloon will know what that balloon's coordinates are.

/and possibly with a crowbar you can get the other balloon coordinates
//ahh, the crowbar. breaks encryption faster then you can say "kneecap"

Trollishness aside, if we wanted a more geeky charity- How about Child's Play? Does double duty giving sick kids something to play with and kicking anti-video-game advocates in the testicles.

Slightly more on-topic, Toys for Tots does a hell of a lot of good in the world. I think the toys and such that they buy tend to be the kind that get played with for a long time - Legos, GI Joes (or whatever) that sort of thing. Also I'm pretty sure they make deals to buy heavily-discounted toys from manufacturers / suppliers, so that $40,000 might buy $80,000 in toys...

Not sure, but I'm guessing.

In the unlikely event that there is a DARPA balloon in Brooklyn, I'll let you know. I tend to agree with PanicAttack and Lesbian-Jesus:

"... darpa wants to know how quickly word of highly visible government will spread and via which networks...

but it sounds like a fun challenge anyway :)

Or it's a way to figure out which social network servers to take out if need be."

I think in the grand scheme of things, there's no way that all Farkers are going to agree on a single charity. And frankly, that's a good idea; the more that are out there, the better.

I love doing my Toy-for-Tata runs, and occasionally still shave my head for St. Baldrics. Doesn't mean that we can't do others such as this one.

Sure. I just stuck it out there- Child's Play is my personal favorite charity especially considering how young it is (as an entity). Toys-for-Tots is a venerable entity that has retained it's simplicity and value in an age of ever increasing bloat in non-profits.

What the hell? Are you saying Toys for Tots is in collusion with toy manufactures to dispose of all the crappy Chinese plastic toys that were too lame to sell on the open market? If a toy sucks then poor kids still should be grateful for being regifted with one because it helps the economy (whose economy?) through at least tax writeoffs.

Quit being a douche. If you don't agree with the charity then don't participate. Set up your own group. If you win, contribute the money to the charity you deem worthy enough.

Me? I'd choose St. Jude Children's Hospital. However, that's not going to stop me from trying to help out here if I can.

I bet :D I mostly ride vintage bikes (not known for having creature comforts lol) and I've done a few New Year's rides around Columbus OH area. Even with insulated carharts and as much gear as I can possibly wear, it's STILL a jump-in-hot-shower moment when you get inside and someone helps you peel the clothes off. brr!

There have been some crazy reports that the balloons are filled with nanobots that enter your body through the nose, mouth, ears, and genitals.

I know, it's silly, right! :)

LOL, WTF is up with that shiznit, right! :) Probably one of these types that we all enjoy on the internet:

What a retarded meme those people are. Take a chill pill!

It is just a fun competition that will explore the roles the Internet and social networking play in the timely communication, wide-area team-building, and urgent mobilization required to solve broad-scope, time-critical problems.

Let's win this one for the kids!

Later, dudes :)

yea, i'm not reading all that. But i did read the rules, cause i'm just that nerdy. Anyway, US Gov't employees, their spouses, and dependents cannot enter BUT they can give the coordinates to someone else and they can enter it for them. I dunno if that applies here at all, but i thought i'll throw it out there.

what_now: Do me a favor- go find one of the guys manning the Toys for Tots boxes and get into a big argument about it. That should end well.

No please dont, getting a kick out of the replys and all that, but just let them stand in peace.

If they added in different types of local network disruption, they'd have a great way to figure out how to most efficiently squelch unofficial transmissions without affecting their own.

I have to wonder how much of this will be used to determine how best way to stop people from communicating during protests, immediately sharing pictures of things that would embarrass the govt., etc.

Either way, I'll be out at Mt Charleston and will keep my eyes open.

2009-12-03 01:10:37 AM
I thought I saw a weather balloon once, turns out it was a UFO, then some government thugs came by and tried to convince me it was a streetlight!
How about if I sight one I shoot it down so no one else can report it afterward?
