I am in for Toys for Tots.

You can bank on other groups doing it. Be wary of GPS coords you find elsewhere.

TheRealist: OK, using fake balloons to throw off other groups is just downright wrong. I love it.

I've never heard of fake balloons. Wouldn't it be better to use real red balloons for the decoys?

You can make one out of cardboard then attach it to some transparent balloons.

Derp.

North Chicago burbs checking in!

2009-12-02 07:09:57 PM
Remember kids, you need the balloon number along with its coordinates.

TheShavingofOccam123: Fair enough. Subterfuge is out.

Well, good for you.
But I assure you that some groups that want to win the money for themselves will cheat in whatever way helps.

For example how do we know that punckrockgirl is really not a 30 year old man from some cabal at 4chan? This contest has been known about for a while. Sure "she" will help collect all the info from Farkers, but first it will be passed back to the 4chan cabal.

br0g: So have we found any yet? Has anybody found any yet?

I found one way up thread on a light post.

I'm gonna tie this little booger-eater to one of these balloons.

I'll keep a lookout in Milwaukee.

Good luck, but...

SA Goons will likely win this thing and spend all $40,000 on animes.

Wait! instead of participating why don't we all put up our own red balloons and really fark the whole thing up?

Now that is not a bad idea, if only members of Fark know about it, then it would screw other social networking sites.
it would actually be a great addition to the experiment.

That's probably exactly the sort of thing DARPA is looking to study: how legit information propagates through a huge social network, alongside mistakes and deliberate misinformation. We'd almost certainly be doing them a favor if we put up our own balloons, twittered incorrect coordinates, posted PS'd balloons tethered to obscure landmarks on our blogs...

Yeah, that's just what they want you to think....

Full disclosure: I'm actually a 68-yr-old M2F tranny with low self-esteem, nasty BO, and a penchant for hairless-midget-cat-on-a-tricycle pr0n.

But also I work for Fark, and Drew talked me into setting this up. So it's like official and stuff.

That's what I was talking about. Cheating the cheaters. Not putting up red herrings for balloons but posting false coordinates in this or some other Fark thread. That way if people wanted to copy other peoples work, boom goes the dynamite.

zedster: In the odd case that one is deployed in Madison sure

douchebag/hater: I'll keep a lookout in Milwaukee.

Douche and I got Milw covered. Madison and Menomonie are covered. Is there a Farker who can cover Green Bay?

2009-12-02 08:09:41 PM
Central Missouri covered

/unless there is a balloon
//then I'm stealing it
///not yours DARPA

2009-12-02 08:10:54 PM
Eyes open in Huntsville, AL. There's lots of them gubmint types around here.

Seriously, I expect there to be a winner like 10 min. after the balloons go up - all decoys aside.

But yeah, if I see one, Fark will be the first to know.

2009-12-02 08:14:00 PM
DARPA wants to know if we have seen there balls?

2009-12-02 08:27:00 PM
Count me in. I'll keep a watchful eye on the sky here in Santa Fe, NM.

2009-12-02 08:29:15 PM
nuclear_asshat: Anyone in N. Mexico? There are hundreds of little airstrips for military projects scattered out in a whole lot of nothing.

I be there

2009-12-02 09:03:49 PM
I'll be driving from Minneapolis to North-Central Iowa on Saturday morning. I'll keep an eye out, but I don't know how I'd get you any coordinates.

2009-12-02 09:15:33 PM
If I see anything in Saginaw, MI, I'll CTRL-F for DARPA on TF and report in.

2009-12-02 10:01:27 PM
I'll take the polar regions -- so we got that covered.

/Red balloons should be easy to see with all that melting ice.

Northeast Kansas, near KC here.

2009-12-02 10:57:25 PM
regjoe: Consider the Denver Federal Center in Lakewood, CO covered (largest concentration of Federal agencies outside of Washington, D.C.).

Yeah, on that note (and from the FAQ's):

"Employees of the U.S. Government including spouses and dependents for tax year 2009 are not eligible to participate. DARPA employees and DARPA support contractors and their dependents are also not eligible to participate."

2009-12-02 10:58:18 PM
I'll be keeping an eye out in NE Alabama

2009-12-02 10:59:08 PM
your're going to take $40,000 and the best use you can come up with is to buy a bunch of plastic chinese crap for kids?

why not buy food or shelter or clothing (not from gap kids preferably) just light fires with it?

or you can fuel the materialistic whore shopping worship culture that has overtaken our country. great idea. /not playing for that waste.

Just a thought, but head for the hills if you really want to help. Here in norcal, there's a summit nearby that gives a 360 degree view on a clear day. There are two more 40 and 70 miles NE and E respectively. For an investment of about six hours I can cover roughly 1000 sq. mi. by line of sight with some binocs.

It would be so cool if Fark won this. I'd like that.

i'm not trolling douche. and supporting buying toys is not him "owning" me either. but go ahead and help waste 40,000 on a completely negative cause. serioulsy, come up with a useful donation and i'll help, but teaching poor people they need shiat from corporations that will not help them better their lot? real altrusistic of you shopping monkeys.
