Wait! instead of participating why don't we all put up our own red balloons and really fark the whole thing up?

Now that is not a bad idea, if only members of Fark know about it, then it would screw other social networking sites.
it would actually be a great addition to the experiment.

That's probably exactly the sort of thing DARPA is looking to study: how legit information propagates through a huge social network, alongside mistakes and deliberate misinformation. We'd almost certainly be doing them a favor if we put up our own balloons, twittered incorrect coordinates, posted PS'd balloons tethered to obscure landmarks on our blogs...

Another stupid question, shouldn't the police union win by default because they would have been notified, and aren't all technically members of the federal government.

2009-12-02 04:36:48 PM
I'll keep an eye out in SLC. As for those without GPS, a basic knowledge of your surrounding area and Google Maps will give you coordinates.

They're probably being told out for them, but not where to look.

Fark has hit a new low.

Got eyes in Charlottesville, VA.

Confirmed red DARPA balloon sighted on Catalina Island!

coordinates 133.7 23.42

In the off chance I actually spot one where do we send real results? Directly to you punkrockgirl? I assume posting them here just helps other teams.

2009-12-02 04:44:07 PM
Consider the Denver Federal Center in Lakewood, CO covered (largest concentration of Federal agencies outside of Washington, D.C.).

2009-12-02 04:45:40 PM
I'd just like to say, this sounds like a PERFECT use for Google Wave.

Anyway, Sacramento here. I'll keep my eyes peeled, maybe go hang out at the top of the Arden Mall parking garage with binoculars (sure, security will kick me out eventually, but I'll have a good 15 minutes before those fat bastards get to me), maybe take a freeway trip around the edges of town (maybe get one of my friends who doesn't have a 20mpg 6-banger to drive...).

2009-12-02 04:46:39 PM
Does anyone have access to 8-foot red balloons to use as decoys?

2009-12-02 04:47:44 PM
As I am in the nexus of several major Army/Navy/USAF/other bases, and a major NASA facility, and a sooper sekrit CIA facility...this area is probably a good bet for one of these balloons.

I'll keep me eyeballs peeled.

Central NC reporting as needed.

/even though, somehow, it is supposed to snow.

2009-12-02 04:48:43 PM
I'm in Fort Collins, CO, and I'm on CSU campus all the time. If they put one in FoCo, I have a feeling it will either be very near campus, or the highway (which is only a couple miles from there), or the CDC building (since it's a federal building). I can check all those locations on Dec. 5th, no problem.

/Plus I have a digital camera
//Love to take me some pictures and help a good cause

Searched the thread for "MN": only occurances were in the many uses of the word "Damn".

So searched for "Minnesota" and found that I'll be the first recruit from the land of 10,000 lakes. I'll be covering the Iron Range from Hibbing, down 37 to 53 South to Duluth.

If a balloon goes up in MN and it's not in the Twin Cities, it's either St. Cloud, Bemidji, or Duluth.

2009-12-02 04:50:48 PM
Jesus Christ folks.. the point of the exercise is not to spot red balloons but to see how may other people put up decoy red balloons. just so they think they are screwing with DARPA...

suckers

Who is going to enter the locations for Fark? If we see one where should we post?

Yes, directly to me. EIP.

sonofslacker: Roja Herring: HairBolus: DARPA challenge is really a Espionage/Counter-Espionage Challenge not a Teamwork Challenge.

The winner of this challenge will be whoever can infiltrate enough large naive teams and use them all to gather the most information.

If Drew publicly posts the full latitudes and longitudes of found balloons, then Fark will lose. The only reasonable thing to openly post is something like "balloon found in N Ca."

To do this properly one has to get into the whole "need to know" and "trusted agent" game.

We're to email them to punkrockgirl not post them

Ok, so we'll post them in this thread. And as many other sites as possible.

Egggggggggsactly!

OK, using fake balloons to throw off other groups is just downright wrong. I love it.

I'll be on the lookout in the suburbs of Detroit. Of course, the thing'll probably get shot down before I see it.

I'll take Kansas.

Yes, I know it's a really big state. But it's also REALLY flat. And I'm on top of a 7 story building.

I'm planning on covering as much of the Flagstaff to Kingman area as I can in Northern Arizona.
I want to especially concentrate on the local National Weather Service office in Bellemont, because I know they have facilities for launching weather balloons.

Other searchers may also want to locate weather service offices in their areas and start from there.

I'm guessing that the balloon minders may not want to carry cylinders of hydrogen around in their cars to fill the balloons at some remote site, and helium is expensive when used in amounts large enough to fill an 8 foot balloon. They will also be sitting there all day and will want to be near a bathroom. Maybe an RV will be involved.

Any other AZ Farkers who want to coordinate, my email is in my profile.

Portland, OR reporting in. I'll keep my eyes open.

Yes. It looks like DARPA already has authentication procedures in place, with possibly more to follow that they're not revealing until right before the balloons go up. Besides, cheating for kids is still cheating.

I think there are enough of us to make a good dent in the competition as it is.
