Be sure and read the DARPA faq. There is something in there about not entering negative GPS numbers.

/good thing i have jeebus to tell me where i am. we don't need some fancy numbers

Anyone in N. Mexico? There are hundreds of little airstrips for military projects scattered out in a whole lot of nothing.

I'll keep a look out for one.

They'd probably have to tether it to a cow.

I have no idea how this is supposed to work, but if someone tells me what to do, I can do it.

netweavr: Wouldn't it be easier to look for the US Gov't vehicles now? I mean they have to already be moving to the locations for the balloons to be placed. So if you live in a small town and notice a Fed car, it's a pretty big hint.

I work in DC and 'commute' to a small desert town owned by the government.

All I see are US Gov't vehicles.

New plan. Who wants to donate money to me so I can fly my own baloon with a number on it over my house?

Haha!

@AlwaysRightBoy

You can go into your BB setup options, Advanced Settings and under GPS, it will tell you the lat/lon. just make sure it's updated and accurate according to google maps app.

I'm out in Middletown MD, 21769. You can count on my eyes. Go DARPA!

A quick FB search shows about an equal number of groups working for charity and agreeing to split the money ten ways.

The problem with the latter, is that anyone who finds one would be wise to join every single one of those groups and give them the location, in the hope that would be the winning group.

Roja Herring: HairBolus: DARPA challenge is really a Espionage/Counter-Espionage Challenge not a Teamwork Challenge.

The winner of this challenge will be whoever can infiltrate enough large naive teams and use them all to gather the most information.

If Drew publicly posts the full latitudes and longitudes of found balloons, then Fark will lose. The only reasonable thing to openly post is something like "balloon found in N Ca."

To do this properly one has to get into the whole "need to know" and "trusted agent" game.

We're to email them to punkrockgirl not post them

I'll monitor the 4chan team. Yeah, that's right...monitor....

Wait! instead of participating why don't we all put up our own red balloons and really fark the whole thing up?

Now that is not a bad idea, if only members of Fark know about it, then it would screw other social networking sites.
it would actually be a great addition to the experiment.

It would count as counter espionage if we are to take things per HairBolus's post.

The DARPA FAQ says they'll have some additional information about how to distinguish a DARPA balloon from a decoy as the thing gets closer. In any event, they're gonna have a real live DARPA guy with credentials hanging out under the balloon.

Donald Anderson doesn't have anything better to do?

/not obscure

2009-12-02 04:19:03 PM
They'll probably put one up at Walt Disney World or Kennedy Space Center if they go for Florida with one of the balloons.

Why would anyone post the locations anywhere?

If i see one, I will message the leader. I wouldnt twitter it. I would expect there could be official espionage efforts by darpa to poison twitter. Makes sense in the context of iran.

I wonder if they were behind that maple syrup smell thing a few years back.

2009-12-02 04:23:35 PM
Wait, I think I see two of them! Nope, sorry, it's just my girlfriend wearing a tight red sweater. I'll keep my hands on the situation, just in case.

This is likely something that they are looking into as well. Its a goal to study the habits and workings of social networking....people being part of multiple groups plays into that just as well.

Chances are pretty likely that every single internet group is going to be submitting all locations within hours of each other.
