Hollister to San Jose corridor reporting for duty!

Headso: Wait! instead of participating why don't we all put up our own red balloons and really fark the whole thing up?

I like this idea. It's horrible and very much so something I'd expect from fark.

You could probably get an over-sized balloon from a party city or something, it only has to be an opaque red with helium... the rest is easy enough to do (a number tag and some string).

I'm in like Flynn.

Easy, just follow bat boy balloon boy.

2009-12-02 03:46:37 PM
Also... I wonder how long into Saturday before some sort of bomb squad or something gets called and it makes national news?

2009-12-02 03:47:02 PM
I'm actually gonna be driving about 3000 miles around NorCal and Oregon starting tomorrow, so I will check back in if I find a luft balloon.

2009-12-02 03:47:22 PM
Count me in, I'm in the Omaha area, which may be most unlikely area for one of these balloons to appear.

2009-12-02 03:47:31 PM
How many balloons are there? 99?

2009-12-02 03:47:41 PM
ErgosumDominati: On the very off-chance I see one of these said balloons...what do I get for stealing it?

It's DARPA. You get a very long, highly detailed tour of Gitmo with as many forehead-washings as you want!

HarryPottersStuntDouble: I'm in. :)

If I spot one, I'll post the coordinates here.

PenguinTheRed: I'm in, should we just report back to this thread if we see one?

No, don't do that! Then another team could potentially find it and use it. Email me directly in the event you spot one. I'll post a reminder on Friday and then a game day thread on Sat.

It occurs to me they'll probably put them up around areas where they already have people stationed.

The NASA/Ames facility is near my workplace. There will probably be one there.

Tours are generally boring to me but that forehead-washing thing, that sounds fun, tell me more.

DARPA challenge is really a Espionage/Counter-Espionage Challenge not a Teamwork Challenge.

The winner of this challenge will be whoever can infiltrate enough large naive teams and use them all to gather the most information.

If Drew publicly posts the full latitudes and longitudes of found balloons, then Fark will lose. The only reasonable thing to openly post is something like "balloon found in N Ca."

To do this properly one has to get into the whole "need to know" and "trusted agent" game.

Here comes the super copter
Here comes the noise it makes
The demon was an idea
The demon is awake
Scratch mark traced across the
Surface of your mind
This hour, now upon us
The hour, now arrived

Unmarked helicopters
Hovering
The lord is coming soon
Unmarked helicopters
Hovering
They said it was a weather balloon

/Bookmarked.

bookmark. I'm hoping they'll do the obvious and float one over the pentagon, which is a half mile from here.

albo: 10 balloons, let's say 2 million out of the US's 3.5 million square miles fit the requirements, that's one balloon every 200,000 square miles. like putting one ballon in thailand.

Go ahead...put one in thailand. somebody will go look for it!

New plan. Who wants to donate money to me so I can fly my own baloon with a number on it over my house?

Screw Toys for tots.
Get a rifle, shoot down any balloons you see, send me the coordinates.
We'll split the cash evenly.

//might have to shoot the DARPA guy too

Me thinks darpa want's to know how quickly word of highly visible government will spread and via which networks...

but it sounds like a fun challenge anyway :)

sonofslacker: dugitman: I dont totally get it but Im in.
I like being part of the cool crowd. this is a cool crowd activity, right?

This is a nerd crowd activity.

Actually, it's nerd crowd activity trying as hard as it possibly can to masquerade as cool crowd activity, using flash mob popularity and THE MILITARY as the upgrading factors.

Email sent from the Phoenix area! Count me in!

How does a Search Team work in this case? Are they searching the whole country, along every road and behind every hill?

I don't get how anyone can really "coordinate" this. There could be 10 balloons in one county in Idaho, or there could be one balloon in every city with more than 4 million people.

If I'm driving down the freeway and see one of these balloons, do I breathlessly rush back to my computer and login to Fark to report my sighting?

I don't get it.

2009-12-02 03:56:47 PM
Man, I'd love to see a whole bunch of folks buy some red weather balloons about now.

Or it's a way to figure out which social network servers to take out if need be.

I'm not paranoid. I swear!

from my search it looks like they have no permanent research facilities because everything is project based and short term projects at the 2 to 4 years. So someone listing their current areas of research might yield some good info.

Now that is not a bad idea, if only members of Fark know about it, then it would screw other social networking sites.
it would actually be a great addition to the experiment.

2009-12-02 03:58:41 PM
Also, is it the first team to successfully turn in the coords of all 10 balloons? Will Punkrockgirl get a check from DARPA for $40,000?

2009-12-02 03:58:52 PM
I'm going to laugh if some jackass starts a group randomly putting up look-a-like balloons all over the country.

Ah, I thought this was going to have something to do with electronic networking or whatever. I doubt I'll be able to help with this because I never go outside.

2009-12-02 04:01:20 PM
At what height are weather balloons typically flown? Is this something where I can look down the skyline from the North and hope to see it ten miles away, or is this something where I need to go drive around because it is eight feet off of the ground?

The DARPA FAQ says they'll have some additional information about how to distinguish a DARPA balloon from a decoy as the thing gets closer. In any event, they're gonna have a real live DARPA guy with credentials hanging out under the balloon.

I just had to look up Geocaching. Can one get the the geographical coordinates from the goggle maps app that one can download to their Blackberry?
/Stupid ?
