Disgusting, but not surprising.

2009-12-02 12:47:37 PM
Glad they take their jobs seriously...ya know, the whole taking an oath to serve and protect thing.

2009-12-02 12:51:58 PM
Fire all of them.

2009-12-02 12:58:55 PM
Fire them all. Job one is protecting the people.

2009-12-02 12:58:56 PM
It's a bit ironic that the reaction to this is serving to prove what people have said about Sheriff Joe and his cronys.

2009-12-02 01:09:56 PM
Corrections officers are the ones who flunked out of regular cop school, right?

2009-12-02 01:11:12 PM
Blues_X: Fire all of them.

I think that'd be up to sheriff joe - and I doubt he'll do that. But that said, yeah...that entire police department does seem to be setting the bar for bad cop behavior.

Blues_X: Fire all of them.

Nobody wants to step in that big pile of political poo, though. The officers have absolutely no protection because this is a right-to-fire state, but nobody wants to fire a cop for being a douchebag.

I do. Let me sign the paperwork. Sheriff Joe can drive all the way here and cry me a river.

How much power does this asshole Arpaio have?

2009-12-02 01:26:08 PM
Here's the thing - I don't have a shred of pity for the people in MSCO. Why? Fuhrer Joe is elected. He's been re-elected. These folks are getting exactly what they deserved, sad to say.

Hopefully this will be the straw that finally breaks the camel's back & the Feds step in & clean house. You know that there has to be a huge file somewhere that is being compiled so that when the hammer finally comes down it will hit hard enough that Joe won't be able to escape

/I hope

Now that he's screwing with a judge, you may get your wish. If pissing off the police is a bad idea, pissing off judges is even worse.

I'd like to know who made the bomb threat. If it was called in, there should be a tape of it. But since it's the sheriff's office calling it a "credible threat", maybe there was no bomb threat at all.

well - he was forced to back down over the whole contempt of court thing, so apparently he DOES have limits.

I mean, could someone go over his head to fire these slackers? Or does he have sole discretion?

I honestly don't know. But at a guess, i'd say that it basically comes down to what Joe wants to do. protests could be lodged, investigations done...but it's his back yard. Joe sets the rules.

Sabyen91: How much power does this asshole Arpaio have?

Way too much. Arizona only has 15 counties, and each one has a sheriff's department. They're expensive and over-funded. Municipal police departments could take care of the sheriffs' "workload," but we're stuck with a lot of tradition here. Arpaio's job shouldn't even exist because we have so many overlapping jurisdictions here as it is.

2009-12-02 01:48:57 PM
And for the record, I did say that Joe wasn't going to be happy he was forced to back down on the contempt of court citation. He's going to continue to escalate until he proves he's in charge. It just seems to fit his personality - he can't stand appearing 'weak', and it's even worse than usual since this thing is now being watched by the national press.

2009-12-02 01:59:18 PM
But a representative for the Maricopa County Association of Detention Officers, John Solano, said the high absenteeism was not an coordinated effort to show support for detention officer Adam Stoddard...Solano said Stoddard's colleagues do plan to show support for him at a press conference the association has scheduled for later this afternoon

The judge should hold in contempt anyone who called in sick that decides to show up for the afternoon pep-rally. I've known a few judges and they don't care much for people farking with them and disrupting the court.

It really seems to me, an outsider, that he acts like he has more power than a Sheriff and nobody calls him on it. Even this time the judge really wasn't calling Joe out.

He's like King of Arizona or something.

Hopefully people will realize what a poor example this asshole is setting for his entire department and he won't get re-elected. This entire incident shows what poor leadership can do for an organization. When your head guy thinks he's above the law, it should be no surprise that everyone below him thinks the same way.

So he'll torture a few more brown people than normal this week? I don't know if gets much worse than forcing a woman to give birth with her hands and feet in shackles. What was this master criminal in jail for?

Shoplifting.

you know what? This is what outsiders think of when we look at our local police departments. Now, that's NOT how most cops in this country act. But this is what we see, this is the example that the country has for cops and their leaders.

it's gotta suck to be an honest cop and read up on what this guy is doing.

Then the people voting for him are getting the service that they requested/deserve.

While I wish this were the case, there's a sufficiently large segment of the population in Maricopa County (and much of the rest of the country) who simply love the idea of a law enforcement chief who's not bound by such silly and restrictive notions as "following the goddman law", as long as said officer isn't targeting them or their families. A great many people simply don't give a rat's ass about the rule of law as long as you've got a "tough on crimeMexicans" image.

If anything, this will probably make him even more popular with a majority of the local voting population.

She had over $1000 in fines for driving without a license. She was arrested while driving without a license. That's a helluva lot more serious than shoplifting. She was here illegally, which doesn't help.

That being said, shackling a woman giving birth is horrendous. What's she going to do, run away?

In Maricopa County? I'm guessing senile old racists who think it says "One Nation Under God" in the Constitution, but who think the 4th Amendment was put there by time-traveling Communist Kenyans.

FARKING ANCHOR BABY!

In all seriousness though, it's ridiculous to restrain a woman giving birth. What is she going to do? Bleed on them?

drsewell: If everyone hates him so much why do they keep electing him?

Because Sheriff Joe will investigate anyone who stands up to him. Even if you're clean, he'll attack you with any wild accusation that someone gives him. His last opponent had a mother who was extremely mentally ill. When this guy was in high school, the mother accused him of raping her. The investigation determined that she was prone to wild statements and really wasn't functioning in what most of us would consider reality. No charges and the guy eventually became a police officer in another jurisdiction.

When he ran against Joe, he was accused of being a literal mother farker. After the ads ran for a month or so, Joe apologized and said that an independent group that produced the ads had gone too far. After the damage was done, IOW. During that election, his opponent had a flyer made (by a freelance artist) that showed him standing in front of a police car. Arpaio had the freelance artist areested, charged with multiple felonies and seized the woman's computers. Even if the charges get dismissed, she's out her means of livelihood.

And if he investigates his opponents this hard, you know he investigates his allies just as much. All he has to do is find someone who doesn't like you much and he's got enough dirt on you to make life a living nightmare.

Combine that with a lot of older and low information voters who don't even live in Phoenix for half the year or more. My Grandmother lives in Arizona from October through April or so, and she thinks Arpaio is the cat's ass. Mostly because she feels that the Phoenix area is too ethnic. Of course, the last time I asked her how she could tell they were illegal, and even so, what harm they were doing, her responses were that "she just knows" and "I can feel them looking at me at the store".

So the politicians and the money guys either support Joe or at best stay neutral out of fear, and the old people return to Sun City just in time to see ads about Joe's opponents being rapists. It means that along with the advantage of name recognition and incumbency, he has a huge advantage come election time.

This is just one more reason to avoid Arizona entirely.

2009-12-02 03:25:50 PM
Sheriff Joe and his entire posse seem to have made an executive decision that they are above the law. Now they're playing the victim card, crying crocodile tears and claiming that they are under siege. If the citizens of Arizona were really out for justice, they would kick him to the curb, but his entire philosophy seems to be pretty hard to kill. And it seems that if anybody dares to speak out against him, that person quickly finds himself on deadly ground; marked for death by his entire crew.

Joe may call himself The Patriot, but I personally call him The Asshole.
