But the weirdest place I saw today was fixed to a door at a Dunkin Donuts.
They don't work, and they burn your hands. Great.

anyone who actually thought about it would know why..."kills 99.99% of germs" doesn't necessarily mean it kills 99.99% of the total amount of germs, it could be interpreted to mean it is capable of killing 99.99% of the different kinds of germs...which is much easier to achieve.

FTFA:Hand sanitizers don't work as well on really dirty hands because grime and grease actually protect germs from being destroyed.

18 is more than enough to do this.

Actually, I remember reading this story a while ago, and can explain it.

Howie Mandel is a big giant germophobe, and did start getting warts due to abuse of hand sanitizers. However, it's not because he jacked up the immune system on his hands, which is a nonsensical statement (although frequent use of sanitizers does seem to weaken the immune system, especially when kids use it).

Warts are caused by a virus that is easily killed by the bacteria you normally pick up on your hands. Mandel nuked the crap out of the bacteria on his hands, so the viruses that cause warts were free to do their thing.

My dad actually told me that when he was a kid (late 50s/early 60s), he got a warts on his hands. The doctor's advice? This blows my mind... The doctor told him to take a pocket knife and cut across each of the warts several times, and then to go play in the dirt. The bacteria in the dirt would kill the wart virus, and the warts would go away.

My dad did it, and it worked. And he never had a problem with warts again.

But it still blows my damn mind that a doctor told him to do that.

I never had used any until I had a job where this client had a really big cold sore that was oozing (eww!). He kept wiping his lip with a napkin. He knew it was gross and was trying to minimize it. But his napkin kept coming closer and closer to my laptop until finally it touched.

I doubt those hand sanitizers do anything to the cold sore virus, but it made me feel better at least. I had difficulty wrapping up that power cord after work for days. Wanted to wear gloves.

Silly, I know.

My first thought when I read the post was of Parasite Rex, and lo and behold...

It's a really interesting read, and the bits that talked about how banishing parasites in the western world may be to blame for the sudden high incidence of digestive system disorders and allergies in the last seventy years was quite surprising.
