Thanks for giving us news from 2 weeks ago. Then again, I live in the area and it's REALLY old news. Funny how such little deals turn big once media becomes involved.

My initial thought was "man, this poor guy will never see a naked woman." Then, I realized. A close brush with the law? Possible tarnish to his record. The women love this stuff. Accordion to me, he's a regular stud.

"I admit street performances are not the polished, perfected, album-quality fare served up by formal concert venues,"

I just love it when some leather clad rock demi-god comes on the stage and yells "ARE YOU READY TO POLKA!!"

Mama's got a squeeze box
She wears on her chest
And when Daddy comes home
He never gets no rest
'Cause she's playing all night
And the music's all right
Mama's got a squeeze box
Daddy never sleeps at night
Well the kids don't eat
And the dog can't sleep
There's no escape from the music
In the whole damn street
'Cause she's playing all night
And the music's all right
Mama's got a squeeze box
Daddy never sleeps at night
She goes in and out and in and out and in and out and in and out
She's playing all night
And the music's all tight
Mama's got a squeeze box
Daddy never sleeps at night
She goes, squeeze me, come on and squeeze me
Come on and tease me like you do
I'm so in love with you
Mama's got a squeeze box
Daddy never sleeps at night
She goes in and out and in and out and in and out and in and out
'Cause she's playing all night
And the mu

"The Village Council ruled Monday night that street performances by a 16-year-old Chardon High School sophomore ..."

Well, I think this was the right decision. Heaven knows a 16 year old accordion player really isn't going to be too busy trying to decide which girl he'll be going out with on saturday nite, might as well let him play his accordion !"
"Welllllll, it's saturday niiiight and I ain't got nobody, I got some money cause I just got paid..."

Bass555 - A music store in the bay area called The Starving Musician has been putting out bumper stickers that say "play an accordion, go to prison - it's the law!" for years and years.

Well then by all means you should check out the band Polkacide. Out of hand punk polka. Truly bizarre.

I haven't seen him in a while, but there used to be this panhandler here in Chicago who plays the accordian... AWEFULLY! I mean it... it's the worst thing I've ever heard... I'd almost consider throwing money at him just so that he'd stop playing long enough to put up his hands and protect his face.

Could someone explain the real estate agent reference? I'm a little slow on the uptake today.

You gotta be good to serve fare like this:

Weird Al just has a very young demographic, I think. I had his albums and stuff when I was in middle school, and the guy obviously is talented, but even once I hit high school I was kinda like "feh" about him.

He did a great job with Ben Folds' "Rockin the Suburbs" video, though.

God, I'm suddenly reminded of that old SCTV routine that John Candy and Eugene Levy used to do about the polka musicians. I can't remember the characters' names, but man, it cracked me up. SCTV - better than SNL could ever even hope to be.

By design by neglect
for a fact or just for effect
when they met where they connect
at the confluence of travel and sex
more a trip than a quest
plunged into the deeply freckled breast
where to now? if I had to guess
I'm afraid to say Antarctica's next

or Chagrin Falls, Ohio
where the unknown won't even go
to Chagrin Falls, Ohio
where the unknown don't even go

Home's solitude with options
artificial chaos isn't one of em
return there crestfallen
chagrin fell out of her apron
no profound spell no special effects
the continent tipped and she just quietly left
chagrin falls on our heads
not in a gush but in maddening droplets

Chagrin falls (in Chagrin Falls, Ohio)
Chagrin Falls (where the unknown don't even go)
Chagrin falls (in Chagrin Falls, Ohio)
so falls Chagrin falls (where the unknown don't even go)
so falls chagrin falls
so falls chagrin falls

It's weird to me that street musicians are so terrible in America. It's rare to see someone on the corner playing something that is actually any good. I haven't spent that much time in Europe, but I got the impression that street performers there are usually pretty talented. Even the people busking on the subways in London could actually play.

Well, really, have you ever tried squeezing a piano? Not to mention having it strapped to your chest.

2003-03-27 01:26:22 PM
street music is cool.

As long as it's not near anyone's residence, where they would possibly like to be sleeping, then there's no problem.

2003-03-27 01:50:56 PM
Why is it that musicians (street or not) who play guitar and harmonica at the same time (Springsteen, Dylan, Young) are considered musical geniuses, but strap a pair of cymbals to your knees and suddenly you're a traveling geek?

2003-03-27 02:31:43 PM
When I was a freshman in college, one of the dorm RA's would play his bagpipes outside in the afternoons. Now I like bagpipe music as much as the next guy, but I'd MUCH rather have an accordian player playing outside my window while I'm trying to study.

A friend of mine grew up in a small German town in Missouri. At his wedding, he had a polka band. It was so much better than the usual crappy wedding DJ. If I can ever convince someone to marry me, I plan to run the idea by her.

2003-03-27 02:36:36 PM
I live in the dead center of an historic Belgian town, and every spring and summer night I have to listen to accordian players, roving in shifts, tormenting the diners and drinkers on the square below me. The worst is a saxophone-accordian (!) duo that pops by every night, once or twice. Now that sucks!

2003-03-27 04:02:25 PM
PSA: it's spelled accordion.
