I spent no money on non-grocery items this entire weekend and did not celebrate the holiday whatsoever. I feel like Calvin's dad in the strip where Calvin tries to convince him to buy big-ticket items for Christmas to boost the economy.

2009-11-29 11:37:59 PM
Maybe the expectations were too high.

2009-11-29 11:39:04 PM
I'm really not feeling the holiday thing this year. I was honestly hoping to, because I really need it. But it hasn't happened yet.

Honestly, it's just become too depressing.

I did my part to stimulate the Las Vegas economy this week. Farking crap tables.

2009-11-29 11:44:31 PM
Once I realized that shopkeepers and merchants and other purveyors of Black Friday goods would weep and wail and gnash their teeth if a single penny remained unspent on that aptly named day, I gave up caring about their lamentations of doom.

YOu'd have neve rknown it by the state of the Carousel Mall in Syracuse on Saturday. That thing was packed to the rafters.

They're selling Charlie Brown Christmas Trees at Walgreens.

asterling.typepad.com

So cool I may buy one.

Yeah, I want to go out and spend my money while I'm hungover, with the turkey and gravy shiats...and with football on? Plus, there are too many people just AWing and, well, I'd rather drink again and watch football and eat leftovers.

Friday after Thanksgiving IS the most wonderful time of the year. Why waste it?

2009-11-29 11:58:17 PM
I bought a sdhc card for my daughter's phone this weekend.

/just doing my part for the economy
//my part turned out to be about 15 bucks

I couldn't even be bothered to check the online sales.

2009-11-30 12:05:16 AM
I bought my wife a MacBookPro for a significant amount of money, so screw all you douchebags who didn't help me help the US economy.

/Can I set up a PayPal fund to defray the cost?
//Please?

2009-11-30 12:05:17 AM
Yeah sorry, but I've come to like the idea of a non-materialist Xmas. I mean, the last 4 years have been fun. My kids don't really care about the toys, cause lord knows they get enough of them throughout the year. They have friends and family over, we play games, eat fatty food that will take years off our lives, and best of all, no stress.

Um, why would your wife need a MacBook Pro. She can't wash your shirts with it. She can't vacuum with it. She can't cook with it. Oh, wait, is she using it to keep her recipes on it? Pfft, you'd been better off giving her note cards and a box of pencils. Women love stuff that make their men happy.

It gets a little harder each year to recapture the innocence of childhood, doesn't it, Mordant?

"Black Friday weekend spending down 8 pct per person"
...
Retail shares may head lower on weekend data

You think maybe a few people might have held off expecting this reaction?

Give me a farking break subby. America is not ruined, the foreign corps dumping their products on our ports at cut-rate prices are very farked however. Yes, LG, I'm talking to you.

/Just returned an LG BD-390 because the both the wired and wifi didn't work and their tech support was a bunch of condescending teenage assholes. Thank you All-American Amazon who let me simply send this piece of shiat to back to those korean asshats as a return and on my own terms. I'll be replacing it with a PS3. So much for customer loyalty, considering I bought a BD-300 for myself and my parents last year, and even gave my "old" but well working BD-300 player to my grandparents last week after getting my new model in. But this years model is a turd. Networking did not work AT ALL and I got treated like a complete and total retard by some very snotty, half illiterate "customer service" reps who I am sure are quite happy to see me return this product via Amazon and never again look to LG for so much as a piece of paper to wipe my ass upon.

// Ohh... did I say not to buy LG products, because they are shiat?
/// End Rant.

... ohh and did I say anything about Amazon? Get it cheap, no shipping costs for 2-day air and enjoy the ability to send anything back w/o question. Amazon Prime, learn it, live it, love it.

2009-11-30 12:12:47 AM
I spent dick. Black friday is a bunch of shiat that only serves to reinforce the fact that "The Holidays" are simply about consumption and lining someones elses pocket.

\\I do like the Charlie Brown X-mas tree though

another part of the american tradition.... eat tons of fatty foods( not that people dont eat fatty foods anyway), go on a super shopping spree, possibly get mowed down by some other person wanting that great deal at wal-mart... digesting that huge intake of food till christmas, then opening presents while ingesting more and more food... as we do all that we listen to the researchers telling us how fat we are.. how i love america

Also, today I walked into a camera shop on my neighborhood who wanted $1,400 + tax for a Canon 24-70mm L series lens. I simply said that I would like to pay $1300 for it because I could get it for less than that ($1277) on Amazon. After a couple minutes of deliberation gave it to me for $1300.

Sure, I paid a bit more than I would have on amazon, but I gave a small and very local retailer some business, at a reduced profit however.

I knew my cousin wanted a food processor, so last night I bought him one on Woot! This morning he called me to brag about the great new food processor he'd just bought on Woot!

Anyone need a food processor?

Ugh.. cheap as hell, but for a reason.
Try out an extreme IV UDMA.
You'll see why they are are giving the III series away.
Short answer: they have to, free is about all they are worth

2009-11-30 12:26:35 AM
I looked at the deals on the Apple website and decided that paying off my credit card bill was preferable to more sh*t I don't really need.

So I guess even from Canada I'm doing my bit to ruin everything.

I have a Ultra II 2GB for my Canon 30D. Seems to work great so I figure this is an upgrade, and for cheap. Besides I can use it for other things besides Photography that does not require fast transfers.

some one like you guys need to stimulate my economy and buy my canon lenses!
ive never been a fan on san disk... lexar is all i use

On side note rcain, the fastest ranking CF card for my camera is:

SanDisk Extreme IV 2GB @ 6.780MB/sec

The SDE3:

SanDisk Extreme III 4GB is @ 6.028MB/sec

as seen here:

bob_ross: I have a Ultra II 2GB for my Canon 30D. Seems to work great so I figure this is an upgrade, and for cheap. Besides I can use it for other things besides Photography that does not require fast transfers.

Yeah they will do the trick.
But, for me it's not about file transfers... 16GB UDMA takes about 2 seconds longer than a 4GB Extreme III.

It's about the initial image record time to the media drive.
I can take more pictures faster with the UDMA, it's a known fact.
If you have a modern (within the last 2 years) digicam, read the capture time + capacity specs.
You can get a few more pictures in and at a significantly faster frame burst than with the Extreme III. And that to me and most everyone else is a major deal.

However, if you're just popping off a shot every here and there, you probably don't need all that.
And there's nothing wrong with it.

But, some people want fast^ response^ times^

Dear Retailers,
You're not hiring so nobody has any money and you're crying about your sales. SUCK IT!

why would you ever go out on black friday, generally if you look around you can find the same deals online without the crowds and with better stock.

SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s Edition 4GB is UMDA + ESP (Enhanced Super-Parallel Processing). I'm not following you.

2009-11-30 12:49:00 AM
Also, those "close to call" MB/s add up when you're using a 21.1 Megapixel camera on RAW^ and want to do a frame burst on fast moving objects. You'll see it then. It may only be one shot more, but it's a shot you wouldn't have had before. And that to me is all the difference in the world, and separates us as consumer types.

2009-11-30 12:51:47 AM
Don't blame me, I spent as much as I always have on Black Friday: nothing. The deals aren't worth those crowds.

True, but my card will achieve 23MB/s on the C5D MKII. The Fastest card is 32MB/s - for $189.99

I paid $1.99

I forgot about 'crazy shopping day' and went through downtown on a walk to the library and was swallowed by insane crowds full of stressed shoppers, bell-ringing Starvation Army folks and loud-mouth anti-consumerism protesters.

No it's not, or at least not that I've seen and do not compare with my Extreme IV UDMA and other UDMA cards (non SanDisk make) Those are all rated at 40MB/s and above.
My Extreme IV is 45MB/s... a full 15MB/s than your III series with some bonus crap for select partners. My IV card is guaranteed at 45MB/s no matter what. And that's in camera, not disk to computer transfer time.

bob_ross: I paid $1.99

And I applaud you for that. Go back and read my original response.
You got a good deal on something that works good for you. We are different types of consumers and no one here is right or wrong. I am merely pointing out the reason for the steep discount. My needs are more cutting edge than many others here, and if you have a public email on your profile, I'm sure there are many others here who'd like in on that good deal. However, I'm not interested in anything that's less than 40MB/s, but that's just me.

And fact of the matter is, when the majority of people look at the stats on the CF cads, they are talked into the new series UDMA, which might be more than they need, but they will ultimately be happy with and are "the latest thing"

rcain: SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s Edition 4GB is UMDA

Yes it is. From the SanDisk site (new window):

Supports UDMA:
- Extreme IV 45MB/s
- Extreme IV 40MB/s
- Extreme III 30MB/s
- Extreme Ducati

NOT UDMA supported:
- Extreme III 20MB/s

You should also check this (new window)

The fastest card on the 5D is the Ducati 8GB @ 32MB/sec. And burst mode matters with the camera internal frame buffer not the CF card (mostly)

Thanks for that, I'll buy one of the Ducati's and see how I like it.
Hopefully it will be as big a difference between the series III and IV... or enough to justify the purchase. And then "mostly" regarding the CF card's capabilities is paid witness to by the mere fact that a RAW 21.1 Megapixel image is just a lot of bytes to push around, internal buffers and dedicated circuits or no. So yes, those write speeds do come into play.

17% unemployment. which part of this do these analysts not understand? you can't lay off massive amounts of people, cut their pay, trim back bonuses and/or overtime, and then hope for a massive sudden surge in spending.

Actually, you can..

Unfortunately (or not) credit card companies have been slashing the amount of credit available to people.
