well that makes for an afternoon of interesting reading.

/The Able Archer Incident should be an addendum next to the Stanislav Petrov entry.

From one of the articles:

Fan death is a South Korean urban legend which states that an electric fan, if left running overnight in a closed room, can cause the death of those inside (by suffocation, poisoning, or hypothermia). Fans manufactured and sold in Korea are equipped with a timer switch that turns them off after a set number of minutes, which users are frequently urged to set when going to sleep with a fan on.

...

I thank you for posting this link to Fark, subby.

In addition to enjoying some interesting Wikipedia articles, I took the time to stake my electric fan through the heart (just to be sure).

I owe you a cup of coffee, man. You saved my doggone life.

Man, there needs to be at least one Han Solo mention on that list.

"Back to the Future timeline" redirects to the main page about the trilogy, which doesn't contain any timeline. IIRC, it was deleted for being irrelevant, way too in-depth, or possibly both. (The terms are not mutually exclusive, especially in Wikipedia.)

As a roadgeek, I am pleasantly surprised to see "United States Numbered Highways" at #5.

From the Traumatic Insemination article: "...such coercive sex practices are common in nature and provide sperm competition, enable bypassing the mating plug, and overcome female resistance to being mated."

I've been doing it wrong all along.

Two of my favorites are on here.

K Foundation Burn a Million Quid, and Fan Death.

A friend of mine lived in Korea for a year and went as Fan Death for Halloween. Good times.

Great list. I've seen about 10 of them just randomly browsing through Wikipedia, but this is better then hitting random article.

I love the deep borehole stuff. With all the nerd love for space, drilling into the planet is often over(under?)looked.

The "Green Man" one was pretty interesting, which led me to this one, which I really wish I had found before the Halloween scary story thread.

In order to save time, I would like to sum up the two major complaints which are likely to be posted about Wikipedia in this thread.

1. "Wikipedia sucks because THEY keep deleting all the good articles. I wrote an article about my favorite garage band/webcomic which has no fewer than 12 regular readers/meme which everyone on this one message board knows about, and it was deleted!"

2. "Wikipedia sucks because its standards are much too low. I keep seeing ridiculous articles about stupid shiat no one could ever possibly care about".

Note that 1 and 2 contradict each other, but that's ok, because they're generally never posted by the same person.

In contrast, there are many instances of conservatives not requiring acceptance of conservative principles as a condition of friendship. For example, Ronald Reagan had many close personal friends who were liberals, and dozens of political ones, like Speaker Tip O'Neill and Senator Ted Kennedy. These liberals were friends with Reagan although they knew he was a conservative. On the other hand, there have also been a few cases of liberals not requiring acceptance of liberal principles as a condition of friendship. For example, Tip O'Neill and Senator Ted Kennedy were both friends of Ronald Reagan. Reagan was friends with these liberals although he knew they were liberals.

Also, I would like to add phreaking, the B-70 Valkyrie, and Captain Kittinger.

Seriously? This was stupid. I thought maybe there would be one interesting thing there. Clearly subby needs to get a brain. I've raped people for less than this. Maybe next time you'll try and think: WHAT DOES FRED FIND INTERESTIN!?!!? Well let me tell you. You better find something quick. Because right now I've got a bottle of lube and a barrel roll thats waiting to happen.

That's not even the best one. This is the best:

Court rules that for the purposes of the law, a house was legally considered haunted. (new window)

I'm a big fan of reading Wikipedia articles about disasters and people dying in horrible ways while I'm procrastinating on papers. Here are some of my favorites:

The Dyatlov Pass Incident

The Byford Dolphin Explosive Decompression accident

The Nedelin Catastophe

The Tunguska Event

Not sure why so many of the cool horrible things happen in Russia. I liked the Year without a Summer article, got redirected there from volcanic eruptions.

Also love watching BLEVE videos on Youtube. I'm weird.
