FEAR! PERPETUAL FEAR! YOU MUST FLING YOURSELF INTO A CONSTANT LIFELONG FRENZY OF WILD-EYED TERROR! THE MOMENT YOU SLIP INTO THE SLIGHTEST BIT OF PEACE IS THE MOMENT THEY COME FOR YOU!

Right?

2009-11-27 02:45:24 AM
Yes, it's a response to fear, and oddly enough, it was the Bush Administration's own commissioned report that found that the militia movement was on the rise and a growing danger. You might remember that one, that was poo-pooed about being silly, up until some old bugger decided to go and shoot some folks.

Trade on fear, and this is what you get. Nice going folks. You KEEP scaring folks, and they react, and then some fella gets the idea to get those folks together and give them a purpose and an outlet.

Otherwise, they just wind up like this:

oddly enough, there's an element of truth to that allegation - esp if you consider the war on drugs legislation and the activities of some of our DEA folks. They get the wrong address and your ass is beat down and in a jail cell for a while until they figure out they f*cked up. And there's nothing you can do about it either - they kill your dog, smash your house down, beat up your wife or kid(s) and it's 'oh too bad, we got the address wrong - suck it up sunshine, it's for the kids/drugs is bad'.

Now i'm not saying we're gonna roll up to the hood and start tossing political dissidents into gitmo any time soon, but we could do with a bit of restraint on some of our more zealous law and order gun bunnies.

This is not new. This has been the status quo for decades (see Weaver's comment on the Drug War). Hell, we formalized and endorsed it with the PATRIOT Act: apply the right label, and anyone's rights are forfeit. That we don't have thousands of disapperados is how you know we've not completely segued into a totalitarian state.

Wait until China catches up to us. Democracy and all its 'rights' will be seen by many as what's holding us back, just like in the 1930's with the American fascists.

We'll see. If we keep pushing toward a corporatocracy, we'll probably just continue the trend of remaining free on paper, and "voluntarily" surrendering your rights to one or more megacorps.

And as to that worldview you're outlining: Rudy 9iu11ani's "freedom is about authority" speech comes to mind. Fascism -- alive, well, and on the march.

1. Thanks to several malicious cancers growing on our government - the War on Some Drugs and the "patriot" act to name the best known - the headline is correct.

2. The proles have nothing to fear

3. Forming militias might keep the government away from you (only because they don't need the bad PR) but it won't help anyone else.

4. Most of those who need help are perfectly happy to live under tyranny as long as the trains run on time.

Such attacks are a vent for racial anxiety and outrage

um, what is racial anxiety??
the idea that a black man is getting paid more than you?
that the black man is sleeping with your white daughter?

the only good thing about these nuts, is that they can never keep their mouths shut. you can always get them going.

2009-11-27 03:41:28 AM
I am curious about another thing. these "the government is out to get us nuts" ... they pretty much feel that all our rights have been taken away already or will be taken soon. right?

so they are in favor of legalizing drugs, gambling and prostituion, right? all those things were legal when our country was founded.

/same goes for abortion
/yah, didnt think so

This lunatic's quote should not be tagged as "obvious."

This guy also claimed that the Oklahoma City bombing was a conspiracy between the US and Japan.

And this is different from the Japanese Internment during WWII how?

/ Oh those were happy fun camps.

The fact that these people get 10x nuttier under a democratic president says it all.

This is what these "patriots" are. Domestic terrorists as bad as any foreign threat.

Most hardcore 'right-wing rugged individual' types that I've met are most definitely for legalizing all those things, abortion being the only iffy one.

It's called projection. If militia types were in power it would be torture and rape abounds, bodies floating down rivers etc.

crab66: The fact that these people get 10x nuttier under a democratic president says it all.

This is the crux of the issue. Yes, the war on drugs is bullshiat and the government takes too many liberties (ha ha! Double meaning) in its pursuit of many "crimes," but when you get down to it these nuts aren't talking about freedom for everyone, they're talking about stopping the evil Democratic oppressors. Clinton and Obama are the ones who really bring out these people. Nevermind the most egregious violations happened under Bush, some of the creepiest rhetoric happened under Reagan, and Nixon actually kept farking enemies lists. They only really get interested in this whole "freedom against the government" thing when it's a Democrat in the white house.

I cry myself to sleep everynight when I think of all the people I've known who have disappeared over the years or been in jail for decades over drug usage.

The number is just staggering.

The article is an interview with some nut in Wisconsin. Is he dangerous? Well no.

Olson's militia is minuscule at the moment

But the journalist cites a dangerous trend. According to this very important group: the Montgomery, Ala.-based Southern Poverty Law Center.

We all agree this is the world's most credible source, right?

but there has been a resurgence of the militia movement nationwide, in part coinciding with the advent of the Obama administration. At least 50 new right-wing militia groups have been identified by the Montgomery, Ala.-based Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit civil rights organization. All have formed within the last two years, many spreading their speeches and combat exercises on YouTube.

Oh noes, youtube?

i finished off high school in a small mountain town 40 minutes west of denver and about half of the kids up there had parents that were borderline militia types, and almost all were gun and ammo "collectors". Their kids ended up spouting the same racist paranoid diatribes as their parents.

Needless to say, I dont talk to anyone I went to high school with.

You would think a retired Air Force guy (Olson) would realize that the government has F-22s and shiat. I'm pretty sure militias ceased to be relevant sometime around 1783.

Good point. Highly mobile, faceless, extremists with nothing but small arms and improvised devices could never be a problem.

Not a fan of the wing nuts, but to underestimate the threat potential of such a groups is silly.

Actually, the nut lives in Alaska. The article is an AP report hosted by a website based in Madison, WI.

To be fair though, I've bumped into more than a few people in Wisconsin who jabbered about black helicopters and the such.

TV seems to reflect it too. During the Clinton admin, the big X-Files had a lot of stories dedicated to "secret government conspiracies" and so on. Now with Obama in office and Fringe, having replaced the X-Files, deals with "secret government experiments"

... it's not a fully worked out thesis, but you get where I'm going with this.

Probably no where. Meh
