I know, every day on my way to work I'm offered at least 3 or 4 jobs. I'm working out of my field because I want to. It certainly has nothing to do with the many people with much more experience who are also looking for jobs.

Good for this girl, but it's kind of like feeding those stray kittens that hang around the house. You parents are going to have take care of them when you get bored or go off to college.

Complain about the economy all you want, but the simple fact is that the vast majority of people have jobs, even when the recession was at its peak.
Sure, there will always be people who can't (for various reasons) get work. But there are plenty of jobs available for the rest of us. They may not be glamorous or fun or pay well or be in a convenient location, but they're out there.

They recognize the fact that some are homeless by choice. That's good, and the fact that they still want to do this thing regardless, is a pretty good testament to their level of compassion.

I'd support it, and volunteer if it were local.. not a penny to anyone but the homeless, that's awesome! Money sent there looks well spent to me. Kudos to those that go this route.

As miserable an existance as it would be, if a guy shaved off his beard, grabbed some fresh clothes from the thrift store, and beat feet to every fast food joint, wal*mart, and general contractor in town, he'd probably get a job.

The problem is that his crack habit wouldn't let him keep that job.

Good for them, that's hard work. I'm an atheist but I don't begrudge churchy people doing this stuff on public land (as long as they don't make the recipients pray in order to get a meal).

I did the soup kitchen thing once ... never again though, not at that same place anyway. The kitchen was tiny with people running everywhere with giant pots of boiling ingredients and sharp knives. College kids arrived late in the meal prep and did hardly anything just to get a free meal and said they volunteered. The people who showed up for the meal were largely middle-aged guys with Olde West mustaches and hats. Or young punk families with fat moms and dyed hair on both parents.

This led me to question why all these stylin' people and chunky women really needed a free meal to begin with ... and if they were competent enough to style themselves, and could afford their accoutrements, aren't they competent enough to hold a friggin' job of some sort? Maybe some of them had jobs already and were just taking advantage of the free meal?

Underwear Goes Inside the Pants. You need to listen to the last verse.

If you don't want to do that follow these simple instructions:

1. Lose everything you've ever had.
2. Live outside (I'd like to give you a time limit but there simply isn't one once you're living on the streets)
3. Wear the same clothes every day and have your confidence shot by the fact you're relying on other people for everything.
4. Be subject to any one of the number of abuses available.
5. Now go get a job, keeping in mind you're probably still in posession of the same underwear you had when you first became homeless..You may not be wearing them, but you'll have them on your person somewhere, possibly as a hanky.

Where I live there are a few jobs, minimum wage, where every job opening has hundreds of people applying. You have to be available to work 24/7, so no second job is possible. If you are over 25 forget applying, they only want the youngest. Rents start at $500 for a rat hole, and if you are lucky to get the job, that's $7.25 an hour at 20 hours a week, so about $140 a week, minus taxes that's about $100 a week. Good luck living on $400 a month. That's why a lot of people live in homeless shelters and have jobs, about 80% of the homeless have jobs where I live.

Whatever, haters. Good for these people.

Personally, I'm getting v. close to being homeless. Though I usually work 2-3 jobs at a time, I was injured in an accident in September. Since then, after jumping through loads of hoops, I've been able to get on disability ($388 every two weeks) and food stamps, but thanks to bills needing to be paid, I may well be evicted soon. I've been trying to sell things that I've made (and not Regretsy-grade stuff, either) and some vinyl I have on hand, but the dent it makes is minimal. Training for a new job, and a good one, but it takes time (commission-only), and with all the doctor visits, well, life is hard. In the meantime, disability and food stamps help, but they don't cover what needs to be covered. Kick. Replies. Waaaaaaah.

In any case, I applaud these people. Judging people without knowing their story is a prime characteristic of a Class A Douchebag.

Yeah, I was riding on a city bus when the driver clipped something with a rear tire and I got thrown pretty violently into the window right next to me. Torn rotator cuff, tendinosis, disc bulges, the lot. The shoulder isn't healing, muscle relaxers don't do shiat, and despite going to therapy thrice a week, it's just not getting better. Actually, no. It means that I live in LA, and am rather close to a portion of it that has 16 people packed into studio apartments, I hear roosters crowing night and day from my neighbour's concrete "yard", and the sidewalks look like...well, Tijuana due to the swap meets and food carts. My Hispanic building manager has way worse things to say about that neighbourhood than I do. But she's probably just racist.

I have nothing against Hispanics of any stripe. If I did, I would have a tough time living and getting along both where I am and where I used to live in the Bronx. I am sorry if you took it that way, but it's certainly NOT how I meant it. Matter of fact, I'm making an effort to learn Spanish, since it's the dominant language in my neighbourhood.

In this thread and in real life. Sure sure, everyone should give to the United Way! They're making sure every child gets a new book in their house every month. They're giving money to the boy scouts!

but God forbid an obviously paranoid man asks you for 83 cents. He should stop hanging out downtown yelling at people to "stop following him" and get a job at Walmart!

You don't have to give them money. Its pretty easy to ignore them. You don't have to get pissed off and whine about how hard you work and they don't. Oh, what? if you give him money he'll use it for drugs and alcohol? Guess what- he's obviously an alcoholic- he isn't sipping martinis and meeting classy broads- its not glamorous and I don't think you need to give him a lecture about how to clean his life up. I'm pretty sure he reaizes that his life is not so great. He doesn't appear to have a lot of resources, self esteem, or any kind of support system

I've met people who are convinced that homeless people (tan, thin, raggedy clothes, & a backpack of who knows what) are just faking homelessness for the money.

Oh yes, the obligatory dumbass.

The same dumbasses that figure that since poor people are poor, they should never spend any money, not even $5, on something that isn't directly life-sustaining.

/WHAT?! YOU ORDERED A PIZZA?!! WHY DIDN'T YOU SAVE $3 AND BUY MICROWAVEABLE POP TARTS FOR EACH MEAL!
// Yea, that's you all right.

I don't when I am mooching off of others. Whatever they do with their own money is ok with me though.

Did you know, some people buy their TF more than one month at a time? Swear to God, its true! There's even a discount if you go for 6 months or more.

Also, some people give totalfark to other people as a gift. So there are at least two ways this guy could have TF without having spent a dime on it after being injured.

And, of course, what RockofAges said stands also.
\TF is $5 a month for shiatloads of entertainment
\\Cheaper than even going to one movie

Homeless people in the US are either lazy or inept. There are fark to many programs available to help them out.

Yeah there are the stories of people who literally could do nothing but they're few and fark between. Generally I ran in to people with too much "PRIDE" to seek assistance. That just tells me they weren't ready to deal with the reality of their situations.

Now the people I ran in to when I volunteered in Mexico, Uganda, and New Delhi, well.. that was just sad.

To all you bastards saying they should get jobs without knowing one thing about them, farking stop pretending you know everyone's world from one article on the internet. Also, RTFA, and see how a true Christian acts:

"The economy is bad right now; there aren't always jobs out there," he said.

He said he realizes some are homeless because they want to be. "But we are not here to judge; we are here solely to serve one meal to someone who feels they need that meal," he said. "This is what God wants me to do."

...

"The Farmer's Market," he said, "is pretty generous with potatoes." He also hopes to come up with cakes or brownies for dessert.

"The ladies at our church - Shiloh Baptist in Saraland - love to bake," he said.

You guys are farking pathetic compared to this 13 year old, her family, and her church.

It's cool. I knew that my TF had lapsed the last time I logged in. (I usually buy it a year at a time, and figured it had lapsed in July.) However, there was a PM waiting for me that said "Happy Birthday", and I found that I still had the TF. It was a nice surprise from somebody who chose not to reveal their identity. But I promise you - I'm fine with being a Liter if that's what has to happen, because I know what $5 a month buys.

/Thanks for the birthday gift, you Anonymous Magnificent Bastard!

The vast majority of homeless where I live aren't lazy, they're mentally ill. They aren't employable, both because they would not necessarily understand what the job was, but also because if they did find someone to hire them, they'd be a liability to the business because they aren't stable enough to avoid someone attacking a customer.

The real solution is going to have to be based on long term supervised or semi-supervised housing and mental health care for many of these people.

National health care is a major step in the right direction.

Farking Canuck: FTFA: "This is what God wants me to do."

How does he know what god wants??

It seems to me that god has gone to great effort to make these people suffer ... what right does this guy have to interfere with god's plan?!?

/Sorry ... forgot that god is only responsible for good things. The untold suffering in the world is just bad luck.

Just so you know, very few Christians actually belive "everything happens for a reason" and that everything that happens is "God's plan." Many people (upon something good happening) usually attribute it to God because it gives us a purpose and makes us feel better...whether or not God had anything to do with it or not. God does not make bad things happen, and people are fully capable of deciding to do things themselves (we get sick, we die...this is life, not God). I just honestly wanted to give you some perspective from a Christian standpoint. Have a good Thanksgiving.

I assume that's your way of saying you don't like living near persons of Hispanic descent. Your racial insensitivity, if nothing else, means you have someone to whom you can feel superior. You must need that.

I'm a lawyer in Sonoma - I do estate planning work, but I do know a little bit about personal injury cases too because I produce a call-in legal advice program on KGO 810 AM.

In case you don't know, you must make an administrative claim against the City Bus within six months of the date of your injury, or you can't sue, as long as the Bus is a local government agency. The lawyer you talked to probably told you this, but I wanted to let you know, just in case he didn't tell you. We've had calls in to the radio program from people who called in when it was already too late for them to have any legal recourse, and it really sucks to have to tell them this.
