Just go ahead and add usatoday.net and brightcove.com to your adblock filters or hosts file as appropriate.

You're ruining FARK!

2009-11-24 03:24:45 PM
will usa today be adding a boobies section?

2009-11-24 03:37:48 PM
Does anyone actually BUY USA Today?
I only read it if it's free at a hotel I'm staying at.

2009-11-24 03:38:17 PM
I can only hope that this will mean more benefits for all of us little people that have been here to support fark for such a long time. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.

2009-11-24 03:38:29 PM
I'm guessing this will mean a Hell of a lot more USAToday greenlights. I might have to start going through that rag and submitting stories then if only for the insta-greens.

FTA: "What the Fark? Fark, one of the oldest and strangest crowdsourced news aggregators on the Internet, is teaming up with USA Today."

We were crowdsourcing before "crowdsourcing" was even a techie douche buzzword.

2009-11-24 03:43:59 PM
What's next a TV show based on Fark submissions?

2009-11-24 03:45:26 PM
Come on people, does nobody watch The Colbert Report? It's THE USA
Today.

2009-11-24 03:45:41 PM
So we (TFers) pay $5 a month to contribute materials to a newspaper, which we may then buy when it is copied to our local paper? Brilliant!

2009-11-24 03:45:48 PM
oooh a travel tab! let's do that

2009-11-24 03:46:53 PM
Fark currently has plans in the works to partner up with other media outlets. "I can't go into any great detail because if it turns out some of these ideas suck as much or worse than a travel tab we'll shiatcan em."

And here I was hoping MY five bones a month was enough to keep Drew in Heineken. I figured it meant we'd never HAVE to sell out to doddering, fourth-estate dinosaurs looking for a little web cred.

Hmph. I guess I'll take a "wait-and-see" approach. By which I mean the first time USA Today starts throwing up ripoff limerick headlines with shiat meter, I'm gonna drive to Kentucky just to kick Curtis in the shins.

2009-11-24 03:48:33 PM
I'm sure that the folks at USAToday will love our lowbrow vulgarity!
Pimp away, Drew! We'll do you shame!

2009-11-24 03:50:17 PM
OMG BASTID BALDING SELLOUT!!11

RocketRod: What's next a TV show based on Fark submissions?

Surely such an idea would be so bad that no one would ever try it.

2009-11-24 03:52:50 PM
i'm shocked that the geek tab is the second most viewed. i gotta submit more stuff there. i would have thought it was politics

Speaks to the power/number of lurking liters.

So, can we also look forward to TotalUSA, where people who kick in an extra five bucks for the paper get to see all the articles they decided NOT to publish that day?

2009-11-24 03:59:17 PM
All I know is that all of this legitimacy gets me in trouble for posting hot chicks. Good for Drew and Fark though.

2009-11-24 04:01:08 PM
I think a Recipe tab would be biatchin'.

albo: i'm shocked that the geek tab is the second most viewed. i gotta submit more stuff there. i would have thought it was politics

Yeah, that's surprising. I don't recall submitting any that would go there, but I'm pretty sure I've never had an article greenlighted under the geek tab.

2009-11-24 04:11:33 PM
Shiatcan them? What if they back a big dump truck full of money to your house?

I've had two go under the geek tab. It seems to be a bit easier to get a greenlight there than in some others.

You know, I never looked at it that way, but what you write makes a lot of sense.

How about a Real Men of Genius commercial on that line:

Bud Light presents "Real Men of Genius" (chorus - "Real Men of Genius..."). Today we salute you, Drew Curtis, for inventing TotalFark.com While other web gurus looked for people to pay for things they published, you got people to pay for things you didn't publish. (Chorus - "I don't want no redlight")

As people submitted headline after unfunny headline, you looked for that one humorous article that you could make green and give to the masses...for free (Chorus - "What the hell's a Farker?")

So here's to you, oh master of the Heineken, for getting people to pay $60 a year for an excuse to click on that occasional boobie link, (Chorus - "That's not safe for work"), and to be able to type STFU and GBTW from their cubicle keyboard.

Also, I noticed this: Update: A USA Today rep tells us that the paper will not exert any editorial control over Fark's signature snarky headlines or categories.

I don't believe that for a second. Nor do I believe that they will not try to exert pressure in regards to comments.

I don't either. But I guess we'll have to find out for ourselves. It won't take very long.

Aarontology: I've had two go under the geek tab. It seems to be a bit easier to get a greenlight there than in some others.

Actually, I was curious enough about it that I clicked "show all" under the greenlights section of my own profile to see. Of 417 greens, only two have been under the "Geek" tab, and they were two years apart--one of which barely qualifies as "geek," the other of which seems totally misplaced there:

03-07-2009: New study predicts Arctic summer ice could be gone in as little as four years; polar bears say "So long, and thanks for all the seals"

06-07-2007: Not content with only producing vehicles for men with small penises, Hummer introduces cell phone for men with small penises. Unconfirmed reports say it weighs 12 pounds, costs $2000, and needs battery recharge after 3 minutes of use

One more while I was writing that--only 9,611 more to go until I catch up with 40below!

Hau Ruck: I don't either. But I guess we'll have to find out for ourselves. It won't take very long.

Kinda makes me wonder if USAToday had ANY idea of the sheer mass of snarky, over-bright, attention-whore Farker-baggage that came along with this li'l partnership. Sure, they might be able to piggyback a little of the web-cred...But we've never been what you'd call a passive crew of introverted little shrinking-violet types eager to keep our mouths shut and our opinions to ourselves.

Of course, it's not like once the paper is printed, they have to worry about the comments thread next to each article filling up with sarcasm, trolls, limericks and gorgor links for the rest of the day. So, maybe they won't suffer TOO much from the association.

As incredibly shiatty as the articles USA TODAY does publish are, they would have to pay me a substantial sum to look at the ones they didn't think were good enough to make the cut.

All it's going to take is for some of their readers to check out Fark, stumble into a particularly explosive flamewar, and complain about the images, language, tasteless jokes, and so on and complain to the paper about the association.

Hmm. I suppose I thought so because I've only tried for geek twice and got it, and had many, many, many other attempts with other tabs denied.

Hey, Caveat emptor. If they didn't know we were snakes before they picked us up, then that's the failure of THEIR goddamned research department. We've ALWAYS been like this.

but fark has done this before, right: Blender magazine had the music page.

and i notice Windows 7 is advertising their association with Family Guy a few weeks after backing out of that seth macfarlane special, so maybe the corporations realize there is money to be made among the snarky and tasteless.

Ok, but if any of my editorials end up getting printed by USA Today, I want to get paid at standard rates.

albo: but fark has done this before, right: Blender magazine had the music page.

Huh...you're right. I had totally forgotten about that, actually.

Of course, Blender went tits-up not long after that. USAToday, on the other paw, will probably be kickin' it post-apocalypse, long after the only potential readers they have left are Keith Richards and all the cockroaches, and the only advertiser they've still got is Twinkies.

Fark has, but I think there could be a difference in audiences with Blender and USA Today, with those who read USA Today probably being a bit less cool with how we do things around here.

Well, yeah. That there is the double-edged sword of the EULA, I suppose. No ownership...but no responsibility, either.

I guess it sort of evens out.

When did that happen. I thought people owned their own comments on Fark.
