I call bullshiat on this article. Everyone knows that Baghdad is a far nicer place than Detroit. In fact, I've been proposing for years now that we save money on both military training facilities and law enforcement agencies by simply having the US military train for urban combat in Detroit.

Detroit would be doing much better if it wasn't for taxes

itazurakko: From TFA: "Family ties and cultural support from the region's large Middle Eastern community appear no match for the U.S. effort, which tries to place refugees in cities where they stand a better chance of financial success."

That's the actual reason. Some initial seed of immigrants settled there, and they attract others.

Same reason there's all those Hmong up in Northern WI and MN, also Fresno, Vietnamese in Westminster/Santa Ana (Orange County), etc. Where there's previous arrivals, there is a language bubble and appropriate food stores, Saturday schools, houses of worship, etc etc.

The original seed arrivals can be totally random (in the case of the Hmong it was missionaries happening to settle them there).

Eventually they might move to climate more like "the home country" (apparently there's Hmong moving to NC) but by then the kids grew up in whatever original location, so it just stays.

Makes things convenient if you're looking for that cultural community, though.

/mostly visit the UP in Michigan, myself

I've always been amused by the Vietnamese community in Memphis, TN. No idea how they got there, but they have cleaned up several neighborhoods.

They moved from Worcester, Mass to Detroit. Hard to find fault in that decision.

Gyrfalcon: we sent our armed forces into their country intending to free them,

We didn't send our armed forces there to "free them". That's historical revisionism at it's finest. We did it in an attempt to shape the geo-political landscape of the Islamic states in the middle east (see "rebuilding america's defenses" and PNAC's letter to Clinton, authored and signed by the big players in Bush's administration). Which was done under the pretense of searching for weapons of mass destruction and 9/11.

JohnnyC: Oddly it doesn't surprise me. Detroit is particularly famous to Iraqi people if I remember correctly. Wasn't Saddam Hussein given the key to the city of Detroit back when we were "friends" with Iraq?

Yep... I remembered correctly (new window).

I actually wasn't aware of that until hearing it on NPR a week or so back. Blew my mind.

RanDomino: Detroit would be doing much better if it wasn't for taxes

This. I'm all for taxes in my own way, but city taxes are WRONG for cities doing poorly. I don't think it's a coincidence that those cities with municipal taxes include Detroit, Flint and Pontiac. And in the case of at least Detroit they should drastically lower state taxes as an encouragement to get people to move there.

ciocia: The silverdome isn't in Detroit, it's in Pontiac, about 30 miles away. The city proper is in tough shape, except for downtown, but the 'burbs are o.k.

Again, I know this. It's why I added it as an "Hell, even the Silverdome..." thing instead of just listing it alone with the rest of the downtown landmarks.

But then why was it called "Operation Iraqi Freedom"? (March 19, 2003, "President George W. Bush addresses the American people at 10:15 p.m. EST to announce the beginning of a "broad and concerted campaign" to disarm Iraq. The campaign is known as Operation Iraqi Freedom.")

If there were jobs available, I'd move back home to Detroit in a heartbeat. And yes, I'm white and from Detroit. Born at St John's Riverside in 84. And yes, I am completely sane. I'd love a chance to revive my home and watch the Red Wings/Tigers all the time.

mostly I mean that if they eliminated property taxes then hippie homesteaders would arrive by the hundreds to rehabilitate the place. pretty impossible when you force people to sell something to make money to pay taxes.

'course, by that plan, after the place gets set up then the usual bastards will just start taxing and building jails and launching wars again.

Gyrfalcon: But then why was it called "Operation Iraqi Freedom"?

The label is not the purpose. Freedom in foreign lands, in the eyes of the American people, is NOT the main reason for going to war. If it were, the US would have attempted to conquer a clear majority of the planet. We attack foreign lands for two reasons: They attacked us first or there's a national security purpose for the war. Freedom is NOT a reason for America to go to war.

Even the US response to genocide reflects this. The US responds with force if the genocide is happening on our allies borders, but if back wood darkies are doing it, we do NOTHING but pay lip service.

The whole of the stated justification by the administration was weapons of mass destruction and 9/11. Freedom and democracy in Iraq one of the stated outcomes. Not the reason to dedicate American lives in war.

If Bush had said, "We should invade Iraq to bring democracy to them for the purposes of shaping the geopolitical landscape of the middle east, so that decades (if not centuries) down the road, the middle might possibly be all a democracy...". The American people would have said "WTF, you're a moron, lets focus on the people who attacked us and get those bastards". Instead, his administration cloaked the entire invasion in WoD and 9/11. When the purported WoDs turned out to be a figment of imagination, the purpose became 9/11 and Democracy. When Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11 and who really gives a flying fark if Iraq has a democracy. Just like who give shiat if any other random nation has a democracy.

The work of his cabinet with PNAC made quite clear the reason for going to war. All you had to do was read the publicly available literature (combined with the few journalist who actually attempted to fact check the administrations claims) and you would have known the lie for what it was. A lie. Every last one of them KNEW there weren't WoDs in Iraq. They used 9/11 as an excuse to do something they wanted to do from day one, but knew it was politically impossible.

I feel the same way about Tennessee. It's funny, actually: Damnyankee motherfarkers are swarming into western North Carolina, completely oblivious to the fact that they are on the wrong side of the mountains.

Good.

Stupid damnyankees.

Hint -- Detroit's residents aren't originally from Michigan.

Michigan will happily trade Detroit's southerners for Tennessee's carpet-baggers.

Double troll?

Ex-Michigander (Macomb County) here. Before I was kicked out (2005), there was, from my perception, an increase in more of a "hipster" trend.

After reading much of the comments, it just makes me miss it even more. Hopefully the Big 3 can just stop making cars and focus on Robocop and we can all move back.

twomutts: Soni, you want to check out Detroit sometime, you let me know (no bulletproof vest needed). Your choice; we go out for some outstanding beer/pizza at the Motor City Brewery, or I'll treat you to some of the best BBQ you've ever had over at Slow's. Neither of them are "downtown" and yet they're absolutely thriving. If you pick Slow's, by the way, you'll get a close up view of the big, bad Michigan Central train station, too.

It won't be quite as exciting a story as "OMG I seen fifty people shot and that was in the airport concourse!@11!", but I'm sure you'll be able to come up with SOME sort of story for your friends.

With Quicken Loans moving their HQ to downtown, that will be a big boost of young people working and living in the area. Also, local startups are being greatly boosted by the Kauffman Foundation, Wayne State's TechTown, and various venture capital funds. The new governor candidate, Rick Snyder, is an Ann Arbor venture capitalist and brings some interesting ideas to the table.

Rather than "escaping" Detroit, young people should take advantage of their limited responsibilities, entrepreneurial side, and venture out on their own with the support of the various startup resources in the Detroit area.

Just moved to Charlotte,NC from Troy and am getting a kick out of these posts.
Great things about MI: Beer, lakes, and hmmmm red Wings I guess. I miss the beer the most.

Bad things: Detroit (will always be a sh#thole while blacks are running it. Pontiac and Flint are right behind)
The roads
The winter.

I lived there my whole life and still have a house I wish I could sell for more than 50k less than I paid for it.

Sad to see Birmingham is getting hit, I lived there for over 20 years and always loved it.

I will never move to a cold winter state as long as I live.

Oh, and there is a big middle eastern population near 7 and woodward, quite the racial war going on there. I don't see anyone moving there unless they had no money whatsoever.

I wish them well, Michigan needs all the people they can get.

aearra: So the US invades Iraq on a lie with the result that 5 million people are displaced or become refugees and the "magnanimous" US allows 4,000 to come to the US. At one point one small town in Sweden had taken more refugees than the entire US. I am astounded that americans are amazed that they aren't loved around the world.

I'd be interested to see a follow-up in 5 years, to find out how that small town is Sweden is doing with their new Islamic neighbors. Just wait until someone in that town draws an unflattering cartoon about the Prophet (peace be upon him.)
