White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Monday Washington was very concerned at reports that Russian firms were providing GPS jamming equipment to the Iraqis.

That could be one reason they were against the war, eh?

2003-03-25 10:49:25 AM
Finally! Appropriate use of the "ironic" tag. Unless someone points out that it is inappropriate, in which case, the submitter is a complete asshat and should buy a dictionary.

Bostony, that's the first thing that came to my mind too.

Only one man would dare give me the rasberry!

I hope they kept the receipts: a refund is in order.

I wish the headline would have read "Iraq destroyed by GPS-guided weapons

2003-03-25 10:50:46 AM
Did the iraqi's forget to turn their GPS jammer things on?

Ahh Russian technology!

But, if they weren't affected by it.....

...why bother taking it out?

2003-03-25 10:53:29 AM
Yeah, Russia said it didn't know anything about this, but just a couple of months ago, this same country announced it had "lost" some reactor-grade plutonium. Oh, don't worry, if refined, it wouldn't make that much weapons-grade material.

2003-03-25 10:54:03 AM
Bostony I'm not the first, nor will I be last to say this, but Spaceballs was the first thing I thought of!

ROFLMAO!

"Rasberry Jam..."

2003-03-25 10:54:05 AM
From the same headline writing consortium that gave us the ever popular:

"Iraqis prepare to use the chemical weapons they don't have."

2003-03-25 10:54:29 AM
So if it didn't work.... why did we bomb it. I don't think we are getting the whole story here.

2003-03-25 10:54:33 AM
I bet the Americans sold them to Iraq. Sell off old and busted technology and then destroy it with new hotness....

2003-03-25 10:55:12 AM
Excellent Bostony. I'd like to add:

Ha ha!

2003-03-25 10:55:12 AM

From Ade's profile:

"I like to surf. I live in Sausalito CA, and am probably the only 17 year old in these parts. I sound a lot less coherent on fark than I am in real life. I do not support war with Iraq. 50% of all Iraqis are under the age of 15. It doesn't make any sense to carpet bomb those poor fools. I hate Ackbar. PhotoIsland sucks. The above pic is one of those temporary 'Link to Auction' thinges. When does it expire? Fark it."

Yes, we're carpet bombing the iraqis. Wait, we're not. We're going out of our way to not hit anyone that's not trying to kill us.

Christ, can you do us all a favor and not post until you grow up and develop common sense? Thanks.

2003-03-25 10:56:47 AM
Maybe they did work, and we where aiming for something else but messed up due to the jamming?

2003-03-25 10:57:45 AM
Yup, the US was actually trying to destroy ophanages full of doe-eyed, musically gifted children, but since the GPS system was jammed, we ended up hitting military targets. Maybe next time.

Odd, that state sponsored Iraqi TV is still on, the power looks to be on in most parts of the capital. Basra is having trouble (ground war will do that), but had utilities until recently. Percision weapons seem to be working better than most feared.

2003-03-25 10:58:15 AM
off-topic-ish - the Leader of the Opposition in the UK is making a serious push to have all Iraqi media designayted as military installations. I think this is a bad idea. how can we win their hearts and minds if Mr & Mrs Joe Q. Baghdad can't watch Allah McBeal?

/all that for such a crappy joke

2003-03-25 10:58:25 AM
Ade:

Shut the fark up.

The user manual is apparently only able to be read while drunk on Mig Fighter Vodka. They only had fermented crab juice which is, as we all know, only helps translate Farsi.

2003-03-25 10:59:39 AM
Wow, those were effective!

It's nice seeing something proudly wearing an "Ironic" tag that's, you know, actually ironic.

2003-03-25 11:00:50 AM
Glad to see vague unsubstantiated reports of Russians selling equipment to Iraq is now gospel truth with some people.

Anyway, we were there first. Brits have been selling Supergun parts to Saddam for years.

Stay off our turf, Ruskies.

2003-03-25 11:02:01 AM
Russian equipment, American equipment... ALL MADE IN TAWIAN!

2003-03-25 11:02:07 AM
But, if they weren't affected by it.....
...why bother taking it out?

They may not have been affected by it because the devices were not being used properly, not aimed where they needed to be (if aiming is an option and it isn't some broadcast output), etc.

Doesn't mean they couldn't have been used properly and been effective.

2003-03-25 11:02:22 AM
InfidelCastro:

indeed. actually isn't it ironic that the ironic tag was actually used correctly....ironically.

2003-03-25 11:03:02 AM
Bostony They didn't know it didn't work until the bomb hit it...

Plans for GPS and every other electronic jamming equipment are all over the internet along with detailed plans for making tin foil hats. Its available everywhere, Russia too.

2003-03-25 11:04:12 AM
not post until you grow up and develop common sense?

uhm I hate to say it, but if people did this there'd be a sad lack of posts here.

2003-03-25 11:04:36 AM
I seem to recall a punisher comic years ago revolving around the so called iraqi supergun.. rather the punisher destroying it :)

2003-03-25 11:04:43 AM
It's like a GPS Jammer,
Blown up by a GPS bomb...
Isn't it a little electronic, Dont'cha think?

2003-03-25 11:04:44 AM
"I am also pleased to say they had no effect on us. In fact we destroyed one of the jammers with a GPS weapon."

This says two things.

1. The targets weren't really jammers. Or if they were they were really crappy ones. That would not be a surprise. We are seeing that Iraq really has no military capability.

2. The person who initiated this attack was a moron (albeit a lucky one) for expecting to destroy a GPS jammer with a GPS-guided weapon.

2003-03-25 11:05:51 AM
Bostony

I hope you are not infering that "gasp" our own government would lie to us. I mean that would be like those warmongering countries that we are being "protected" from.

/sarcasm
