The Headline might be funny, but the only thing deserving a "stupid" tag is the moron who posted the link with a "stupid" tag.

This needs a "Cool" tag. I wish more doctors used e-mail/text msg'ing to communicate with their patients this way.

The system would not be suitable for sensitive results such as those for cancer or other life-threatening illnesses.

I would have thought that at least the poster would take the time to RTFA.

2003-03-25 01:33:44 PM
Ahh, Crazyeddit, you've missed the spirit of l33t.

1's instead of !'s imply that the typist was punching the keyboard like a Mountain-Dew-crazed fiend. Doesn't make as much sense on a phone, of course.

LOL, OLOL, LOLOLOLOLLLL! -- same thing, more Mountain Dew.

I prefer "OFMGLOLOOOOLOLLLOOLOOX0RZFAGSAGAGAGSSS!!!!!!!11111oneoneoneoneexclamationpoin t".

1337 = leet = elite. As in "elite group of people who can't spell".

2003-03-25 01:52:18 PM
This has got to be the dumbest invention in history, well recent history..."Text me later".

WHAT THE FARK happened to just picking up the damn phone and dialing?

We're so farking stupid, it's ridiculous.

Me too...I go off on my friends like the grammar nazi when they type stuff like "how r u doing lol!" and whatnot.

But sometimes, when done blatantly, l337sp33k can be pretty funny.

The system would not be suitable for sensitive results such as those for cancer or other life-threatening illnesses.

If you get a text that asks to meet in person then you know something terrible is wrong.

It isn't cancer, it's chancre. 1337 spelling (or lack thereof) is always hard to interpret.

Hey grandpa Ny10709. Did you say that about toasters too? "What ever happened to holding a loaf over the fire?!"

2003-03-25 02:01:13 PM
I think thats pretty obvious Pngwyn, but for little stuff it's nice to know you have someone checking up on you.

2003-03-25 02:02:00 PM
The headline is great, but I got more of a laugh out of Cliff_Yablonski's take on it.

yeah, that makes sense, i guess... 1337
I guess that's why it's a subject of ridicule

I love watching people fumble around trying to text message on thier phones while I whip out the Motorola TalkAbout.

I totally agree.

This is a really cool idea.

2003-03-25 02:07:33 PM
Until just now, I've blown all of it off as Mountain Dew-typers banging on the keyboard in frustration, like this: w3u9owrojfiew930203489903. Wait, maybe even that means something?

NY10709: In hindsite, I can see dozens of uses for texting when I was a teen, like talking on the phone after you're supposed to be in bed, keeping in touch with my friends away at college, bored in French class, etc. But now that I'm a grown-up with virtually NO use for it, I feel left out of this whole 1337 revolution and it makes me mad.

I am sooo glad SMS hasn't caught on in North America.
I hope it gets integrated with real email soon --
before I have to use it!

For people who are wondering how the hell SMS/text messaging got so popular here in Europe, I have an explanation. First, the cost of a simple phone call -- excluding international calls -- can still be in excess of $1 US. Second, it is kind of practical, especially if you just want to tell someone you're running late or whatever. Third, well, there is no third :-)

The main drawback is the maximum length of 160 characters and the keys. Try typing full sentences (let alone words!) with those limitations!

2003-03-25 02:23:54 PM
That's $1 per minute...

2003-03-25 02:30:12 PM
I have 2 questions:

"The system has proved popular with patients and he has even had people texting him while aboard, one all the way from Thailand. "
- aboard what, cruise ships?
"The system is due for an upgrade, with software being installed that will link the messages direct to his PC from April."
- who's April, and what makes her so special?

2003-03-25 02:37:34 PM
aboard what, cruise ships?
Possibly ;-)

who's April, and what makes her so special?
Don't you get it? April is his "secretary"!!! She has to do some work, too, so the doc has her type all the messages on her PC while he reads them and translates them to a text message!

Why do so many people equate 13375p55k with "SMS speek" anyway? Just wondering...

Headline funny...Otherwise, this could only be news in England.
