All religions are cults. Go to church on Sunday? You're in a cult. Been to the temple or the mosque lately? You're in a cult, too.

Convert to agnosticism and you leave your options nice and open.

Flame on.

How did it make her vulnerable to a couple of scummy dirtbags forcibly breaking into her parents' home and removing her at knifepoint?

Salt Lake City is crawling with people like her abductors.

``He knew the right words to say because he was a Mormon who was excommunicated and she was Mormon,''

That is what the cult expert said. No pot shots at Mormons from him. Still, I invite my fellow farkers to start where he left off.

2003-03-24 09:38:23 PM
So, what's a "cult expert?" Is that like a lapsed Catholic? Why not just say, "Some guy said..." Besides, I hear mormons made Elizabeth smart. Ha. Ha. Ha.

Bongo the Godman says that if you don't come live the hobo life with me he'll burn ya down!

The difference between a religion and a cult is the number of followers.

Does anyone have a good link to a complete overview of the Elizabeth Smart thing. I was on holiday when it all kicked off, and never bothered to catch up.
Cheers

I sense another senseless religious flame war where there shouldn't be coming up. :)
IMO, this is a crock. Religiously based or not, a kidnapper is going to find some way to share the same wavelength with a kidnappee. Either give them video games, candy, clothes, give them illusions of stardom, money, or religious happiness. Mormonism has NOTHING to do with this whatsoever. It was just a tactic played by the kidnapper to get her away. If she wasn't a Mormon, it would've been another tactic, either way, he would've gotten her.

I was wondering when someone was going to put those 2 things together. Organized religion is just plain scary.

2003-03-25 07:34:20 AM
I'd hit it!!

2003-03-25 07:37:01 AM
If you think organized religion is scary just think about disorganized religion...

BTW, Organized religion is a stupid term. What religion isn't organized, it's redundant. If there was no organization to it, it wouldn't be a religion.

Cool. Roman Polanski has a Fark account.

It should be illegal to teach religion to children, and bibles should come with a Surgeon General's warning.

Oh boy, break out the napalm. It's on!

2003-03-25 07:50:12 AM
I wish more religious types would take it less seriously. Treat it like a hobby, or something.

damn right JWs are a nutty bunch.

You Farkers need to join my cult. Look at my profile. I'd tap that Mormon ass for you.

Ban religion, thats what i say. Causes nothing but trouble. It'd be OK if religious types practiced what what they preached but more often than not they're just using it as a way to shag kids, or start a war etc etc (could ramble on forever but I'm not trying to convert anyone!)

On a semi OT note.. I will be in Salt Lake City, in mid april for Novell's brainshare conference.. any farkers here live in SLC or have ideas where to stay etc? Anything worthwhile in the area to see (besides the mormon nuts :) )

All this venom towards mormons, my my. :) I've been guilty of poking fun at them too, but honestly... When was the last time you heard about a Mormon Clergy getting caught with his tabbernacle in a choir boy?

..as it was so said, it thus became true, and FARK ruled the world; now and forever, and all men shall bask in it's glory. Everlasting kitten killing and boobies links will make man free and bring peace unto all.

Chants of "France Surrenders" and "I'd hit it" will be heard unto the end of days.

And TotalFAK shall be an even greater place. ONCE DREW GETS OFF HIS DEAD ASS AND GET THE CREDIT CARD PROCESSING ONLINE.

And so it was said by Trent The Thief.

What do you mean, "WE"?

2003-03-25 08:06:10 AM
I have a close friend who is Mormon AND really cool, and we both agree that there are alot of people in the church who are really retarded, but there are alot of non-retarded people too. Don't make generalizations about a group of people just because your uncle's-cousin's-son's-dog's-vet was Mormon and cut off his charms.

All generalizations are false.

Steppenwolf - All generalizations are false.

now, that's just a sweeping generalisation

I think all religions are cults. The only difference is whether a cult is malignant, (i.e. Scientology, Manson "family," OM Shinrikyo, etc.) or relatively benign. (Various modern sects of Christianity, Buddhism, Eckankar, etc.) Whether Mormonism made Elizabeth Smart more vulnerable or not, who knows? At that age, nearly everyone is gullible to some extent.

Check out this site. It happens more often than you might suspect. Mormon communities tend to be close-knit and reporting abuse is socially discouraged.

I guess this is better than speculating on the sexual abuse. /thereisaidit

Welcome back to the fold, Elizabeth.

Here, lets get these horrible cult clothes off of you, that veil and gown. Now, chop chop! Back in your magic underwear, young lady. You've got your ancestors salvation to pray for!

Cult Expert? Perhaps if "X" is an unknown quantity, and "Spurt" is a drip under pressure.

2003-03-25 08:18:57 AM
I should want to cook him a simple meal, but I shouldn't want to cut into him, to tear the flesh, to wear the flesh, to be born unto new worlds where his flesh becomes my key.

2003-03-25 08:26:28 AM
I said the same exact damn thing a week ago. Teenage Mormon chicks are the most naive and vulnerable people you can find.

2003-03-25 08:27:54 AM
Not too Smart, eh?

Imaginary friends make children more susceptible to being controlled by people in general. Just like those imaginary friends you fools like to call "god."

Mormons are vulnerable at parting from their money and their powers of reasoning.

Rurick:

"Religiously based or not, a kidnapper is going to find some way to share the same wavelength with a kidnappee. Either give them video games, candy, clothes, give them illusions of stardom, money, or religious happiness."

You know, I took a class on "propaganda and persuasion" in college and we did a section on cults. It sounds strange, but it seems that the more deeply you believe in any sort of religion (especially if you're deep into literal meaning, i.e. a fundie), the easier it is for some charismatic cult leader to sway you to a new belief system. It seems that it's a personality-type sort of function, not a function of how deep your conviction is. If you look at a roster of any cult you'll find more ex-whatevers than ex-agnostics.

2003-03-25 08:33:14 AM
I like a lot of cult films, am I at risk?
