What would happen?
Bad stuff would happen.
2001-09-19 12:40:44 AM
not just bad, really bad. we're talking potentially really really bad. even cataclysmic.

or, nothing might happen... assuming it didn't hit anything critical.

Afghanistan is declaired the world-wide nuclear testing site?

...And why are we giving them more ideas?

The situation will be described by Weird Al's (yeah I know) song It's Christmas at Ground Zero

Aren't reactors supposed to be hardened against airplane crashes and explosions? A friend of mine says they designed to withstand a nuke, but I'm doubting that. I mean, if an ICBM lands next to your power plant, you have a little bit more to worry about than a few kilos of uranium from the reactor.
2001-09-19 12:52:59 AM
ya know.. there isn't that much to hit in America with a plane. Unless you wanna be the terrorist who slams a plane into Graceland or takes a San Fran to Boston flight into the Golden Gate Bridge
2001-09-19 12:57:09 AM
Yaknow, it seems awful obvious that in such an instance we'd be straight fuX0reD.
2001-09-19 01:00:19 AM

Hey guys... don't worry to much. Here is an article about tests that have been done on nuclear reactors vessels and power plants. One particular test including crashing an F-4 Phantom nose first into a 100-ton wall of concrete (simulating the containment vessel of a reactor), they found that the 100-ton wall of concrete took no appreciable damage.

I kind of consider this one a non-issue.

It's not even "sort of" worth joking about. This very scary stuff. Stuff most people thought we'd never have to deal with. And it's now all staring us in the face. I spent two days of last week desperately waiting to hear if several of my friends had survived. Articles like this remind us that all of our survivals may be temporary, at best.
2001-09-19 01:05:32 AM
HAHAHA! France! Their reactor would explode on their own, and they'd surrender to themselves.
2001-09-19 01:06:28 AM

I helped with the construction of a Nuke plant in the early 1990s. The concrete shell over the core was designed to take the impact of a 747. It several feet thick with so much rebar that you couldn't fit your hand through the bars. As far as security goes, the security guys always carried M-16s and were professional. Right now those guys must be on edge.

One more reason to switch to hydro.
2001-09-19 01:16:33 AM
Well im screwed. I live only about 30 min away from Palisade nuclucer poweplant. Well Left Testicle brings up
another good spot to blow up... A damn.
2001-09-19 01:17:49 AM
If another islamic guy(s) hijacks a plane...then we just suck. I mean come on...surely they are gonna check these guys up and down before they can get on any plane! If not...the airline industry is dead.

2001-09-19 01:21:52 AM
Wow. This author really has it out for nucelar power. I am not a super expert, but I do know that the design of 99% of American nuclear power plants has boron rods drop into the reactor core when any problems occur (usually held out by electro magnets, so they fall automatically in a power loss) and this is required to shut the reaction down in 1/20th of a second. So the idea of an explosion seems pretty far fetched. More likely, some accident would create a contamination site. As for the waste, it is ultimately stored in lead drums way, way underground. Good luck hitting that with an airplane.

This is still a serious problem. But probably just as serious as opening an oil tanker up in the harbor of any major city. If this week has done anything, it has made us aware that there are literally thousands of really bad ways a handful of crazies can hurt lots and lots of people.
2001-09-19 01:25:34 AM
I hate how all these different terrorist attack scenarios are emerging right now. I don't like hearing about it. It just scares me. Also, I hope if another plane is hijacked, the passengers will try to take action this time, even if they are armed with knifes.
2001-09-19 01:28:19 AM

EggYolkEnema Bwaaaaaa Waaaaaaa. Christ, grow up and get your head out of the sand. Time for playing with your dollies is over, this is war and the American people need to know just what kind of war we're getting into.

I don't normally get personal but you just pissed me off. Damn it people get ANGRY!
2001-09-19 01:41:46 AM
I don't play with dollies, you poo-poo head!
2001-09-19 01:45:50 AM
I am shiatting bricks. I hope that we dont allow this to happen.
2001-09-19 01:46:35 AM
I'm pissed the N.F.L. screwed 4 teams outta the playoffs due to this crap.
2001-09-19 01:47:58 AM
And I wasn't being completely serious. I'm actually not that scared of terrorists, unlike most people. They don't have that much power. They are grossly overestimated. This will only be a big war if the terrorists find more countries to back them up.

and I am still fuming over that dollies remark! Time to bust some Judo on you!

As in a great big dam that terrorists could blow up? Depending on the dam, might be worse that a hot reactor site: 100,000 dead, 200,000 dead....
2001-09-19 01:57:16 AM
Egg, the passengers of that 4th flight did take action. From all accounts, they knew what had happened at the WTC. They knew they were going to die. They were very brave people.
I for one do not want to feel normal. During Viet Nam LBJ tried to make things at home "normal" while we were fighting a war, the 'Bullets & Butter Policy'. For me, the stock market taking a dive is good. We need to know that things are not the same. We need to suck it up and get ready for a rough time.
2001-09-19 02:00:14 AM
It's better to be overprepared than to be caught offguard. Resepect your enemy.
2001-09-19 02:01:17 AM
I don't think we have to worry about airplanes on the next one. The assholes will use either shipping (ref: Texas City, 1947) or rail (clorine gas, ammonia, all kinds of good stuff), or just plant a bunch of bombs in shopping malls.

BTW, this preoccupation with knives at airports is rediculous. They are seizing nail files and emery boards, for Christ sake! Hey, for someone who knows HOW, you can kill another person with a damned paperclip!

Keep your eyes open. LOOK AT your surroundings, at the people, at things (packages on ledges, parked cars, etc.), when you go to public places. And LISTEN TO that little voice inside you that may just whisper "get the Fark outta here!" Your subconscious sees things "you" don't.

Keep your cell phone handy. If in doubt about a situation or scene, even if you think it is probably lame and silly, call 911.

CharlieBrown: I know that flight 93 took action, thanks to fark. Judo man kicked some serious ass! I love judo-man. He is my idol.
2001-09-19 02:12:16 AM
Not to get morbid, but someone mentioned a dam earlier.

Can you imagine a hijacked plane slamming into the face on the Hoover Dam? I guess there are untold ways of tearing the U.S. apart geographically. Towers, dams, nuclear reactors, breweries. Oh my God, breweries.
2001-09-19 02:12:40 AM
Ok.. Am I wrong here or did this article not answer the question it asked? I wanted to know what would happen if the plane crashed in, not if the security sucked donkey balls.
2001-09-19 02:13:17 AM
Hell, We are so packed with nuclear plants in France that they could throw one hand grenade randomly while looking somewhere else and still Kaboom-chain-reaction us straight to Mars.
2001-09-19 02:15:54 AM
Then the enemy would expose themselves to us.

Oh and mass destruction. But we have already seen and digested that. They don't know us. We have compassion.
And hunger. *burp*

This scares the living daylights out of me...not only for what could happen in the United States, but Canada as well. We've got lots of nuclear facilities. We're also much less secure. While our military is highly-trained, we simply don't have the defense resources to adequately defend potential terrorist attacks...

Anti-Aircraft guns at every potential target seem like a really farking good idea to me...
2001-09-19 02:19:29 AM
Don't worry about the reactors, its not like they automatically go into uncontrolable fission after an impact. Its the on-site storage of spent materials that you should fear. A well placed explosive will cover the surrounding area with fallout. In fact, a lot of this stuff is stored outdoors so its not terribly hard to get to.
2001-09-19 02:19:48 AM
Damn, A frenchman. *hugs him in brotherhood*

So didn't you have something to do with the Statue of Liberty?

~ Pinky ~
2001-09-19 02:25:43 AM
The statue of Liberty ? It was a gift to the USA so they stop making fun of us, but it didn't work...
It's just a symbol, you know : 'Liberty is pretty good looking from outside, but you'll have to pay if you wanna get inside.'

How to kill someone with a paper-clip:
1. Drop the paperclip.
2. Rip out their larnyx.
3. Wipe hands on Pants, repeat.

2001-09-19 02:29:29 AM
The Hoover Dam? Have you ever seen a cross section to that thing? The rock walls around the dam will fail before the concrete in the dam.
2001-09-19 02:32:45 AM
"Have to pay" to get inside? Heck the Chinese only need 5000 US to get in. And they get their own luxury compartment for the trip.

What more can you ask for?

Sheesum, picky tourists.

This just in:

Prez Bush has ordered Domo-kun to Afghanistan. Ruling clerics immediately hand over bin Laden. Film at 11.
2001-09-19 02:34:09 AM
I highly doubt crashing a plane into a dam would burst it. Damns are designed to withstand tons of pressure at all times, and aren't really vulnerable to fire like a building. A plane might break a few gates, but that's not going to create a torrential flood, just high water.

Terrorists are bad people. Get them before they get you. Watch your neighbor, trust no one.

But hey, what do I know. I've had too much wine and tequila.
2001-09-19 02:34:33 AM

We will all go together when we go.
All suffused with an incandescent glow.
No one will have the endurance
To collect on his insurance,
Lloyd's of London will be loaded when they go.--
Oh we will all fry together when we fry.
We'll be french fried potatoes by and by.
There will be no more misery
When the world is our rotisserie,
Yes, we will all fry together when we fry.------
Down by the old maelstrom,
There'll be a storm before the calm
