You'd think that West Virginia would honor a man with that type of longevity with something named after him.

Seriously. The Robert Byrd Foundation for the advancement of Robert Byrd (located in the Robert Byrd Building at 100 Robert Byrd Road in Robert Byrd WV) should really get on that.

Yeah, it's a real shame that someone like that goes unhonored in his home state.

Bob Dole.

I'd like to get Robert Byrd to finance a Tyler Perry movie, just to see if everyone walked out before the honorifics finished.

NPR had a piece about the guy he beat. The first federal election in Arizona till the 60s.

It's how low population states get sway in congress. Keep electing someone till they get a power position. Way to game he system.

Fark It: real shaman: A fine upstanding Grand Wizard of the Democratic Party.

One of these men ran on a segregationist platform, holds the record for the longest individual filibuster (north of 24 hours, against Civil Rights), and fathered an illegitimate child with a black woman. Another said (in 2002, mind you) that "When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over the years, either."

Do you really want to go down this road?

If it helps, he's permanently given up his right to vote, so his sudden interest in politics is pretty damn laughable.

"So few people read the Constitution to day," Senator Byrd said, pulling out a copy from his breast pocket. "I've always said, this document and the Holy Bible, they've been all the guidance I need." Before I left, he insisted that his secretary bring in a set of his Senate histories for me to have. As he slowly set the beautifully bound books on the table and searched for a pen, I told him how remarkable it was that he had found the time to write. "Oh, I have been very fortunate," he said, nodding to himself. "Much to be thankful for. There's not much I wouldn't do over." Suddenly he paused and looked squarely into my eyes. "I only have one regret, you know. The foolishness of youth... " We sat there for a moment, considering the gap of years and experience between us. "We all have regrets, Senator," I said finally. "We just ask that in the end, God's grace shines upon us." He studied my face for a moment, the nodded with the slightest of smiles and flipped open the cover of one of the books. "God's grace. Yes indeed. Let me sign these for you then, " he said, and taking one hand to steady the other, he slowly scratched his name on the gift. Thank you Senator Byrd.

This is kind of like Barry Bonds breaking Hank Aaron's record. Carl Hayden was a hell of a Senator, poured his decades into getting Arizona an aqueduct. Byrd... likes naming stuff after himself.

Your flagrant disrespect for Robert C. Byrd is the reason Arthas turned on his countrymen and brought Lordaeron to shambles. The undead need representation, too!

Or maybe it had something to do with Frostmourne, I dunno.

I wish all the Senators were all as active as Byrd or better yet just went home for a couple years.

You know Obama's secretary of education proposed magnate schools for at risk blacks and gays, keeping them separate from the other students.

Meanwhile Obama held back all funding for freedom of school choice in DC that allowed poor blacks to attend more highly funded rich white districts despite the massive increase in test scores the voucher program had achieved for at risk children.

Seems kinda segregationist to me.

Europe has freedom of school choice, Asia does too. Why not the US?

Exactly. The people of WV feel they are best represented by Senator Byrd, and I am not too sure what place it is of anyone else to tell them different.

I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds. "

- Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944

Oh you went there:

"I was sorely afflicted with tunnel vision -- a jejune and immature outlook" (new window)

He doesn't get a pass for being a Democrat, he gets a pass for having recanted.

Something you'll never see from the racist Republican party of hate.

And you can find your quotes right in the article linked above, because Mr. Byrd isn't a coward the way the Right is about its racist past.
