Did the article fail to tell us where they were manufactured, or did I just overlook it? China perhaps?

The recent "Barbie" marketing campaign where they use a crappy song from the 90's as the backdrop to all their TV commercials makes me want to lock myself in a bell-tower with a high powered rifle.

Mattel got an exception to the law that was passed last year. They get to do their own "self testing". So I'm not surprised by this at all.

When is the last time there was actually a documented diagnosis of lead poisoning which was traced (with a high degree of certainty) to a toy?

Interestingly, I work with electronics doing a lot of soldering and I cast lead bullets at home - my toddler's lead levels are below normal.

California Attorney General Jerry Brown sent letters to Target, Wal-Mart and the other retailers who sold the products, warning that children's goods on their shelves were found to contain illegal levels of lead and should be pulled immediately.

So, exactly how much lead is the right amount for children's toys?

Yeah, we do. Something about living in a 100 year old house with lead paint and lead in the water pipes.

Or the more likely method of transmission:

"Oh cool, Hot Wheels. I'm going to go play with them for several hours and then eat a snack without washing my hands, or pick my nose and eat it, or rub my itchy eye, etc. etc."

Pediatric offices have questionnaires for parents regarding the things that might expose their kids to lead. They ask about exposure at the parents jobs (I hear people that repair radiators tend to get a lot of lead on their clothes), the age of your home, etc. Score enough points and the doctor will want to have the kid checked.

This is what happens when you manufacture these products in countries with very little oversight, if any...

but hey, it probably saves 'em at least 2-3 cents per unit, so it's all good.

It is also what happens when parents blindly buy kids stuff they see on TV. Why not get out and search around a bit and you might find some toys that are built locally or more locally than China in specialty shops. Buy the child some books to read. Or teach the child how to handle toys and how to wash their hands.

Take some responsibility for stuff from time to time instead of blaming others.

JesseL: When is the last time there was actually a documented diagnosis of lead poisoning which was traced (with a high degree of certainty) to a toy?

Doesn't matter. The law states that lead must be under a certain level, and the asshole toy manufacturer's should be able to comply with that.

I probably played with toys that were dripping in lead paint, and I turned out OK. It's the fact that they're letting it slip by unnoticed that pisses me off.

wolfzr2: fark you China!

I guess you are one of those typical ignorant Americans that don't know that toys made in the US are much more likely to contain lead than toys made in China. You need to stop mindlessly believing everything you are told and at least make an attempt to get the facts before you form an opinion.

Wytchone: Daffydil: Did the article fail to tell us where they were manufactured, or did I just overlook it? China perhaps?

Yes. America still makes toys, and they are more likely to contain lead than toys made in China. In fact, in a study conducted by HealthyToys.org, not only did they find lead in a higher percentage of toys made in the US than in China, the only toys that contained dangerous levels were made in the USA. Stop believing everything the propagandists tell you, and start learning the facts.

Ant: Doesn't matter. The law states that lead must be under a certain level, and the asshole toy manufacturer's should be able to comply with that.

I was really addressing the fervor people apply to these things, rather than the culpability of the toy manufacturers.

You bring up an interesting perspective though. Why does the degree of harm not matter when laws are being considered? If there were some other element that was completely harmless that was a present in toys and the government imposed an arbitrary limit on it, would you feel this irate toward manufacturers that didn't comply? Just trying to understand what principle you're so attached to.
