Great Lakes Brewery occasionally makes their Barrel-Aged Blackout Stout in old bourbon barrels. The result; Bourbon Barrel Blackout Stout is without a doubt the most delicious beer I've ever had. It tastes like a lightly chocolate-flavored stout infused with a smokey bourbon.

It costs nearly $10.00 a glass, isn't available in bottles, and sells out within a few days of release.
Luckily, I live around the corner from the brewery, and had the occasion to partake.

They sell it in 22 oz bottles, which were gone by the day after the release this year.

I've said it before and i'll say it again; this super hop crap is out of control. I wish I could find more craft lagers, fruit wheats, and the like. I can't see how anyone could TRUTHFULLY say that the super hopped IPA's taste good. Like when you were a kid and would put 5 mega warheads in your mouth and play it off, like they weren't sour and nasty.

This statement alone is probably going to get me flamed, but screw it.

People like different things. I like most very hoppy beers I've had. The majority of craft beers aren't super hopped IPAs, so there aught to be enough out there for you to find new stuff you like to try.

Dont get me wrong, I respect the hop flavor, and like my local brewhouses 50-ibu ale. But to me once the beer seizes to be balanced in flavor, stout or lager or otherwise, I just tend to not like it.

ecalcott: its funny that most "beer snobs" posting here clearly don't like beer. it's easy to pick a brand that is obscure and call yourself a connoisseur but a weak pilsner is still a weak pilsner.

the hopped up beers are very, very good and if you don't like them then admit you like your yellow beers but don't dare call yourself a beer aficionado or snob. beer is supposed to have flavor, pretenders.

lagunitas' hop stoopid and lucky 13 ale

fyi,stone is hands down the best brewer in america right now. if you don't know that, you're not reading the trades or tasting their beer. (the special release vanilla porter has no equal.)

While I'm here I thought I'd ask a question.

I'm a recent transplant to the East Coast, and I can't help but notice how hard it is to find a store with a decent beer selection out here. We moved from Arizona where you have BevMo, and well as stores like AJs that carried a bunch of good, hard to find beers in convenient locations.

I'm having a hard time finding similar stores in the D.C. area. While there are a number of good breweries in the area, finding a store that actually carries a good selection of beer has so far proved impossible.

A hop is a bittering and flavor agent. It shouldn't be the only thing you taste. While I enjoy the occasional IPA, I don't like tasting over 9000 IBUs because it's "extreme."

There's more to beer than hops.

I get that a lot of people don't like the huge hop beers out there, but there is a big enough selection out there for all but the most discriminating tastes. I think the best beer I've had in a while is the Thomas Creek "Up the Creek" IPA. 12.5% and really black for the style as a bonus

You listed off a few of my favorites there, so I'm going to take the liberty of recommending a few others you may not have tried. Ommegang Chocholate Indulgence is vastly superior to Young's Double Chocolate (and I say that while noting that Young's is still great).

Also, Ommegang Abbey Ale.

You used to - in the early 1970's in the UK, the term 'Eurofizz' was coined, to describe the Double Diamond, Worthington 'E', Watneys, Whitbread Trophy type swill that were being pushed. The idea was (according to a representative of Ind Coope I spoke to) that you could "Go into any pub in the UK and drink the beer you normally drink".

Luckily, the very nice people at CAMRA started drawing people's attention to what was going on, and gradually the micro-breweries started to fight back. Eventually, the big beer barons started paying token lip-service to beer lovers and even the multi-nationals started to jump on the cask-conditioned bandwagon.

The 'big brewery eating little brewery' thing still goes on though. I still mourn the Firkin Brewery, bought out 10 years ago.

thats another of my favorites, i buy 3 cases a year, so i can have it till the next year. though i have to say some of the last of it tends to mellow as the malts start to over power the hops, but still quiet good!

I had this at the RI International Beer Festival last weekend. Granted I was a few hours into what is basically a 3 1/2 hour power-hour... but I thought it was pretty good.

I bought one of these about 2 weeks ago. It was quite good, but there was a LOT of sediment in it. That normal?

Embden.Meyerhof: I can tell you that there is no farking way that beer is 225 IBUs. Calculated BU's, maybe, but ACTUAL BU's? No way. Alpha acids aren't soluble enough to get levels that high. The BU assay isn't linear at that high of a level, either.

FTFA: IBUs measure a beer's level of alpha acids, the primary bittering compound in hops.

No, the BU assay does not measure alpha acids, it does not measure iso-alpha acids either (the actual bittering compounds, which are isomerized alpha acids). It measures anything in acidified beer or wort which is extracted by 2,2,4-trimethylpentane and has an absorbance at 275nm. The things that fall in this category are not exclusively humulones or isohumulones. It is a reasonable guideline for the amount of iso's, however. (BU's are usually about 1.5-2 times the level of iso's in ppm, based on my own research).
