Are they really implying that organized criminals don't make a profit dealing weapons and drugs, or are they just mind-farkingly stupid? You don't need to fund something that is already profitable, it provides its own funding.

Just out of curiosity, what does it cost for a legal pack of smokes nowadays in Ontario? Over $10, I think, but I'm not certain.

In Caledonia, my MiL buys smokes for $8 a carton. Can you blame her?

The Indians around here have gotten smart. Even without the absurdly high taxes, they only shave about fifty cents per pack off what I pay at the local Korean owned smoke shop. Makes no sense to run 60 mile round trip to the reservation at the current price of gasoline.

FTFA "Strong border control, random searches reduce the illegal activity," Cukier said. "We don't know what extent of money from illegal cigarettes are spent on drugs and guns."

No, you're flat out, farking, retardedly, wrong.

Most of these cigarettes are put together on reserves. 14-20 year olds here refer to them as "native cigarettes" and they go for about 50-70$ less than a normal carton. They are domestically produced; Canada has acreages of marijuana grow-ops, do they really think tobacco is somehow more difficult? People are going to smoke. The cheapest cigarette pack of 20 my store sells is 8.25. That is for bargain bin disguisting garbage.

Right, maybe if we crack down on reserve cigarettes we'll do away with the plague of Vancouver crack and gun warfare. God knows how all the gangbangers in the US would fall apart without their cheap cigarettes funding their organization.

Ranting aside.
This is A) Protection of government revenue
B) Villification of the natives
C) Scaremongering because real news is hard

//Cukier said. "We don't know what extent of money from illegal cigarettes are spent on drugs and guns." Like, for example, maybe none of it.

"Organized criminals are lining their pockets with sales from illegal cigarettes to traffic their weapons and drugs," he added yesterday.

This is absolute nonsense, and betrays either sophistry or total logical ignorance.

Either criminals make money off of the trafficking of weapons and drugs, or they don't. If they make money off of it, then they will continue to do it whether they are also making money off of cigarette sales or not. If they don't make money off of it, then they will not do it whether they are making money off of cigarette sales or not. What is the argument here, that criminals somehow use cigarette sale money as venture capital to purchase startup weapons and drugs? Even if that were true, they would just get it from a loan shark if people stopped buying illegal cigarettes.

In Canada maybe, in the US we don't go for that commie pinko SOCIALIZED medicine, we just go bankrupt from medical expenses after our insurance drops us.

When did any government make creditability a stamped in granite value when defending a tax or anything else for that matter? Government rules allow them to misrepresent facts under the claim of State secrets. The story go off on peddling fear to try to sell the idea that the government is being cheated by very bad hoodlums. The story is deliberately designed to put a dark spin on plain moms and pops getting smokes for personal use across the boarder without paying the higher tax.
