beowulf980: is it sad that that version was before my time and now i have no one to play with?

You can find groups in your area that play 2nd Ed., assuming you live in a decently populated area.

I warn you, however, that the social skills will probably be lacking in any of those die-hards who are still playing 2nd Ed.

Gamer Grrrl: WTF is wrong with BOTH OF YOU! 2e was the biggest piece of shiat RPG that ever existed. THAC0? Save versus Rod/Staff/Wand? Secondary Skills? Weapons Specialization? DIAF 2e!

You're high, right?

THAC0 is, hands-down, the best armor system in D&D. Ever.

Also, since I'm getting all riled up, why in the hell don't level 1 characters die anymore??

2nd Ed?? Your level 1 character would die from a nasty mosquito bite. And, it built farking character. Constantly having to start over from scratch was part of the charm.

Now, you can pretty much take on an entire army of trolls by yourself at level 1 in 4e.

Yeah, that's another thing. The newer systems suck because they changed to the 3.0, 3.5, 4.0.

What kind of bullshiat is that?

It doesn't have the nostalgia of "2nd Edition".

Gamer Grrrl: LOL, 3e killed any chance of me playing 2e ever again. Like I said, I loved it before 3e, but I just can't play 2e anymore.

It's not called 2e.

It's called 2nd Ed. Or, 2nd Edition, if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

The saddest part is my nerd brain instantly conjured up an image of Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver rather than pondering the poetic presentation of the issue at hand.

That's what WotC employees call it. Of course, they also call 4e "D&D", so obviously that's not really a good example. :P

Congratulations. You have figured out why I used this meme in the headline. It is obviously not the woman and child in question, considering the actual child is an infant. Go back and read the thread if you need further examples as to why the photo does not match the article. (Hint: Look for photos of the woman)

NewportBarGuy: Just separate her from service. It sounds like she never should have signed up anyway. The Army really needs to learn how to handle these cases before they hit the news. Yeah, that'll happen.

I know that they make everyone in my unit come up with a family care plan as soon as they arrive on station. This has provisions for how your children will be taken care of if you were to deploy and if you were to be killed. Furthermore a woman has 45 days from the time she is found to be pregnant by a doctor to decide if she wants to discharge from the service or stay in. In my branch at least, it seems there are already plenty of measures already in place to make sure this situation does not happen. Did she think that she had a job that would not involve her deploying and thus she did not have to plan for it?

your statement is uninformative, and therefore nonsense.

That's wierd. There was a hot cheerleader in high school that I chased after for two years but she wouldn't give me the time of day. Then all of a sudden, the summer after we graduated, she showed up at my door and asked if I wanted to take her to a movie. We ended up doing it in the back seat of my dad's Mercedes. She was on the pill and I wore a rubber. We only did it that one time but then BAM turns out she was pregnant. So I did the right thing and married her.

Sorry to have to tell you this, but she wasn't on the pill.

And the rubber, had a hole punched in it.

How come y'all are all pro-foster care now, when usually it's pretty unanimous opinion here that foster care sucks balls?

2009-11-16 06:37:34 PM
I'm basing the following statement based on what I witnessed during my four years in the US Navy:
They told her, quite specifically, that she'd have extra time to find an alternative. Then, for no reason other than to be colossal dicks, they changed their minds.
Some people in the military still don't like females being there and like them even less when they get pregnant. If someone higher up the chain of command doesn't like you and is a dick, they can and will go out of their way to ruin your life.
I'm not saying that's how the above played out, as we really have no way of knowing. But it's a common scenario.

2009-11-16 06:48:05 PM
Jim_Callahan:
Yes, but part of your military contract obligates you to have an official family care plan (someone to hand the kid to), assumably signed by all parties involved and approved by the appropriate military department.

Two words. "Things change."

Having served myself, I know this. Let's say you join the military. You have been through the foster system and had been lucky enough to be adopted by a single woman when you were 6. You are an only child. During your enlistment you start a relationship with someone you met while in service. Eight months later you two decide to get married and realize you are pregnant a month before the wedding date. You fill out the paperwork with his name on it and your one remaining parent's name on it as caregivers should you be deployed.

Six months later, your parent dies or has a stroke and is in a nursing home in diapers. They will never know they even have a grandchild. You have your child at eight months and one week, only to find out that your partner has been cheating on you with someone else for the past three months and wants nothing to do with either you or the baby. You will not see him or have contact with him again, ever. Since he has never seen the child, he has no legal obligation to its' care in any way in most localities (YMMV), or to acknowledge its' existence.

You then get orders to deploy to camel nuts, Afghanistan, in 60 days. What do you do?

Point here is that life doesn't give a rolling rat's ass about a signed piece of paper. Things change and there is nothing that can be done about it.

True, but it is frustrating to expect adults to act like adults, they don't seem to realize that they work for the Federal Government, and that when they do get pregnant and get discharged they have gone from being the bell of the ball, to being back home, broke, poor, with a kid and no job.

Col Hackworth has a history that reads like fiction, he was a hero through, and through. However, he retired in the Vietnam era due to being a vocal opponent of the policies implemented there. As a former Infantryman myself, I gotta tell you, the Army reveres this guy. He just wasn't able to be pc in a new age, he passed away a few years ago.

I am biased admittedly, but hard as it may seem to believe, we really do bend over backwards to accommodate people, just to avoid this kind of press. Also, notice she has a civilian lawyer. That's always a mistake, the military has it's own set of laws UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice).
Just saying, you need a JAG lawyer (like Daniel Kaffee I guess), someone who knows military jurisprudence.

4chan: When you become a member of the armed services you sign up for something that will treat you as an expendable piece of machinery to be done be used and forgotten. I find it disturbing that we made such a huge deal about the Fort Hood thing but no one talks about the number of US military personnel killed over seas during that time. I guess you only matter when your on US soil, once your over there your our little dirty secret and no one will talk about you ever again. If the media really gave a shiat about our service people they would broadcast their photos and acknowledge their service instead of this bull shiat blanket slogan "Support our troops". I guess that might make the war too real for the people sitting on the couch, six beers deep, and spouting off about how we need to keep them over there to keep America safe. If we really gave a shiat about our service people we would demand this.

\Thanks Obama for keeping us over there, glad I voted for you.

I had the same thoughts about the Ft. Hood deal. It's tragic, but how is it more significant than when Muslim fanatics shoot our soldiers overseas?

BTW - did you notice that one of the deaths at Ft. Hood was a pregnant girl? Apparently she was deployed but got herself knocked up with a free pass back to the land of the big PX. It's still very sad that she died of course, but it is also another example of military females deploying this "get out of jail free" card.

Also, it should be noted that Obama said he would end the Iraq war, he never said that about the Afghanistan war (although I think he should.)

2009-11-16 07:52:19 PM
There are sooooooo many larger issues wound into this story.

I wonder how this will effect recuiting. That said, it is probably a short term problem - people tend to forget pretty quickly (think Vietnam) and/or have other considerations (I need a job now).
