Don't worry, if this boy dies, the perpetrators will pay! The UK takes violence very seriously. I am sure they will a hellish 3 weeks in a mental health rehabilitation facility taking anger management classes and learning to find their inner dignity and self-worth. Crime does not pay!

And the nanny state had this to add:

Last November the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the government organisation which coordinates search and rescue missions, banned its staff from using the devices over fears that they were 'capable of causing considerable injury'.

Yeah, if SHOT AT A HUMAN BEING, not if used to flag down rescue ships.

The kids in my neighbourhood play roman candle tag every Victoria Day. It's fun to watch from indoors. I sort of wonder how dangerous it really is though, since they never seem to hurt themselves and they must be really good at it by now...

Sounds like a Fourth of July party I was late to. I show up and my friend Joe is laughing and holding a roman candle while my friend Alex bleeds from the head.

He had a good knot on there, but no lasting damamge. Barely lost any hair.

Police said they believed the family, who were on their way to a children's birthday party, were deliberately targeted.
Detective Inspector David Cavanagh said: 'This thing was being pointed at this group, without doubt.
'It's not something that has gone off by accident. It was wet and windy and there were very few people around.

I'm a little confused - how do they know it was deliberate? or why do they think that?

Could it not have been a horrible accident? or recklessness? remember how you used to throw mud at your brother, except that one time you realized there was a rock in the mud? and this was the time you just happened to through with nfl accuracy?
could have been that

nyuk nyuk - watch me put the scare on that family
oh shiat that's gonna actually hit them

/just sayin'
//also - i love how they add the link for you automatically if you copy&paste text from their article

We used to call roman candle fights playing "marines"

Roman Candles are not the same as flares. Roman candles feel like getting snapped with a rubber band. A flare is like being hit with a RPG that doesn't explode. Significantly more mass & velocity

No licence is required to keep them, but it is illegal to fire one over land.

So... you're suggesting there should be one? Very subtle guys.

TFA: Detective Inspector David Cavanagh said: 'This thing was being pointed at this group, without doubt.

Detective Inspector David Cavanagh is a raving idiot, and should have his media-briefing privileges revoked. Anyone who has been fool enough to fire one of those things into the ground knows first-hand that they have a tendency to bounce around and go flying in totally random directions. I watched a friend accidentally torch his own car after trying to light a campfire with one -- funny as hell at the time, but, looking back on it, you can just imagine that thing coming back and hitting one of us in the face.

'The dad thought it was a firework at first but there was a red flare burning on the ground. The mum is hysterical and neighbours come out to help.

'The lad was placed in a lady's car until paramedics arrived and he was taken to hospital. Another Good Samaritan took the mum to the hospital.

'His parents are absolutely devastated, they are going through hell at the moment. We don't know whether he is going to pull through, his injuries are very serious.'

English English is the most annoying foreign language there is. Why are there unpaired single quotes? Why can't they call "strollers" "strollers" instead of "prams" or "pushchairs"? Why did they write about past events in present tense? Why don't they use a comma between the last item in a list and the second to last item? Why are there so many extra 'u's? England needs to be nuked.
