I know it's a serious article and all but I'm giggling at the thought of a hardcore con with a tattoo that says "salad bowl"

"Salad Bowl" - you keep tattooing that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Let's see...peaceful evenings in the midwest or gangland violence on the west coast.

Nope, I'll stay. Good luck to the police out there...the ones that aren't as corrupt as the gangs that is.

Let me guess, Mexican gangbangers have something to do with this.

When the people can't trust the police or they don't agree with the laws, this will happen.

It's the American spirit at its best.

But Fetherolf, who took office this year, also blamed a tradition of police officers who "love the chase. They get into this business to kick ass and take names, by and large. We're at odds with ourselves because of the people we hire."

Obviously he never saw Colors

10 to 15% of families contain a gang member.... that's not very many for a problem this size. Me thinks he underestimates.

If the problem is as big as it sounds then call in the National Guard, put the city under martial law, get a declaration that these gangs are an organized insurgence and thus traitors to the nation, throw the word "terrorist" in there anywhere, declare them KOS. Anyone who does not cooperate is charged with hindering and collaboration.

The reason that kids join gangs is because they see the gangs as the best option for their livelyhood. Make the cost of being in a gang too high and people won't want to be in them anymore.

The voters of Salinas rejected a 1-cent sales tax to help fight it. Salinas voters value a penny in saved taxes over not getting shot by a gang member and being able to go outside at night.

Now, I know some of you don't like taxes, but you gotta agree with me that that was a bullshiat decision by the voters of Salinas.

Particularly the area from Santa Barbara to the Oregon border. It's an utter wasteland there, a shiathole if you will. An unlivable hell scape. Here be dragons, folks. Stay away.

Since February, combat veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan have been advising Salinas police on counterinsurgency strategy, bringing lessons from the battlefield to the meanest streets in an American city.

Whoever, except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress, willfully uses any part of the Army or the Air Force as a posse comitatus or otherwise to execute the laws shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.

They're smart!
The people knows all those pennies will just end up in the politician pocket, not toward making their community safer.

Yeah but a lot of cops are guards and reservists and therefore most likely combat veterans anyways. Plus it never says that they are actively enforcing the law just advising the police on strategies.

depends on how you want to read it. A strict interpretation forbids the military to advise local police within US borders...but I honestly don't know if any US court has weighed in on the issue. Frankly, given our culture of fear I think the courts are willing to let this one slide if it'll keep the masses content.

damn beaners need to integrate into society. I'm from that area, and those punks just don't want to play nice.

It's not the hardworking parents who came here originally; good luck to them, they are just trying to live the American Dream(TM).

It's the punk ass kids who drive around in Mustangs with shiatty paint jobs and unfinished body kits with the words "Hecho en Mexico" blazed across the back.

people join gangs because they don't have any viable economic options. the job of the police is to prevent people from taking back what's rightfully theirs. so it should be no surprise that people turn to gangs as their economic situation gets worse and worse. but rather than let us take what we need from the rich (entire productive enterprises, not taxes), the pigs and politicians are always inventing new ways to crush us.

yeah but this is a problem that the cops are

a) unable to control, and
b) as Gosling pointed out, the residents cant give a damn enough to spare a penny to fix it either

Gosling, last year they increased the sales tax by a penny to save the city libraries. Instead it went to planting trees and renovating the parks, and now the libraries have cut hours. No where in the the Measure did it say the tax was guaranteed to go to public safety.

I am hispanic and the only person who has ever put a gun to my face was white paranoid tweaker. Personally I hope that if I ever have a gun pointed at my face again no matter what the situation that I or someone I trust has a gun pointed at them. Screw talking about their issues. By the way when someone has a gun in your face I doubt they are more scared of you.

Are we a society of laws or not? The law says we're not permitted to have the military involved with local law enforcement. If local cops can't or won't get the job done...then there's the state police or federal cops who can step in for the assist. There isn't any reason or cause for military forces to be acting as advisers to domestic law enforcement. The job of the military is to kill people and break stuff. the job of a cop is to serve and protect the people of their community. their missions are incompatible.
