Vib V from April to October. Red tide from August to February.

Oysters are getting very seasonal.

While Lil' necks are tasty, they ain't oysters or eaten raw. Luckily, I can walk down the street and get fresh shellfish or fish straight off the docks from Dear Ole N.E.. So I'm all good.

There sure are a lot of uncorrelated theys and theirs in that there headline.

What the hell.

FTA: About 15 people die each year in the United States from raw oysters infected with Vibrio vulnificus...

Also FTA: Industry officials said it could have killed a $500 million economy and thousands of jobs.

Ok, so let's destroy an industry to save 15 people a year? Thanks, FDA, appreciate that.

/just fine with no ban even if I don't eat the stuff

2009-11-15 03:56:26 PM
Looking 10 years into the future, I can see the headline.

Oyster eaters overcome with grief while trying to come to terms with eating too many oysters and now having none.

2009-11-15 03:57:24 PM
I guess thats about 30 dead hands a year then.

It's like the cranks who want un-Pasturized milk. without the "protect the children" angle. I'm sure most kids find raw oysters gross.

That's more realistic

When are they called "oyster crackers" if you only serve them with clam chowder?

That can be arranged.

FTA: About 15 people die each year in the United States from raw oysters infected with Vibrio vulnificus...

Most of the deaths occur in people with weak immune systems caused by health problems like liver or kidney disease, cancer, diabetes, or AIDS.

Yup, if you are at risk because your immune system is weakened, DON'T EAT FARKIN' OYSTERS!

BTW, this all started after Mary Landrieu announced that she may not follow the party line on the health care bill. I saw it as a political message to her from the administration. Oops.

'I weep for you,'the Walrus said:
'I deeply sympathize.'
With sobs and tears he sorted out
Those of the largest size,
Holding his pocket-handkerchief
Before his streaming eyes.

'O Oysters,' said the Carpenter,
'You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none --
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

The walrus, with his girth and his good nature, he obviously represents either Buddha, or, or with his tusks, the Hindu elephant god, Lord Ganesha. That takes care of your Eastern religions. Now the carpenter, which is an obvious reference to Jesus Christ, who was raised a carpenter's son, he represents the Western religions. Now in the poem, what do they do? What do they do? They, they dupe all these oysters into following them and then proceed to shuck and devour the helpless creatures en masse.

The FDA are a bunch of mother shuckers anyway.

Two of my friends ate a tray of fresh mussels. One ended up in the hospital for two weeks while the other was just fine.

Cool story, brah. Yeah, I won't touch the stuff.

2009-11-15 04:17:44 PM
Since when have oysters NOT been seasonal?

Won't see me eating em in July.
3 days of splattbutt and puking is not worth a small appetizer.

Oysters taste best when cold - Especially from the Oregon to Vancouver coast.

Warm water oysters...

Oy.

Can't eat oysters so I guess we'll all have to stick with bearded clams.

"Oyster eaters flex their mussels, tell FDA to clam up" (there, was that so hard?)

NW oysters for the win. Only problem with summer oysters is they are on their reproductive cycle and less firm. Good and available year round!

No, you're right.

Those killer salmonella spinach- and tomato- scares were also unnecessary meddling. Why have the government try to ensure safe food?

It's not as if the food industry would deliberately produce cr@p to increase their profits.

No, definitely not.

Given that it was government opposition that struck down a government proposal, in this case, it would appear that the government did indeed know best.

let the lusers eat them

and when they have a stream of vomit coming out of their mouths and a stream of shiat sauce coming out of their asses at the same time, then they won't be so eager to tell the FDA how to run things.

so eat away, crony capitalists.

people who eat contaminated oysters have a tendency to die, and that ain't all bad for crony capitalists.

2009-11-15 05:04:35 PM
Trust me folks, you haven't ever wanted to die until you've eaten bad oysters.

i'll pass and listen to the scientists who know, not some crony capitalist pig whose only concern is making a buck.

get ready to up that number of deaths, republican.

course, i know you won't eat them out of season because you only want to sell them.

I think the oyster eaters are perfectly within their rights to eat oysters whenever they want. The risk is fairly minimal. The only thing I think should be done is that if you eat oysters off-season, then your death will be considered a suicide for insurance purposes.

which of course is easy to extrapolate out.

apparently they dont need logical reasons to deny coverage.

personally, while I ate my share while in Louisiana from '77-81 and on a couple more trips down in the 80s, I'd never eat anything that came out of the Gulf of Mexico.

Like oysters as much as I do? Two words: Hama Hama (^)

2009-11-15 05:26:19 PM
...And they would've gotten away with it too,if it weren't for "unnecessary government meddling"!
