One of the hospitals I work at has a mental ward, all the exits have "Warning: High Flight Risk" signs. If I see a patient or anyone that doesn't have an ID badge I'm supposed to report them immediately. Scary stuff.

Also, what is it with mental patients and the sweatpants/sweatshirt combo?

It's a fairly common phrase in Florida because Florida is basically a giant mental ward.

Usually it means the person is just suicidal. The suicidal patients are kept with all the other psych inpatients... on a "secure floor."

The escaped mental patient is probably nothing more than a chick who listened to too much Sarah McLachlan, took too many pills, and kept a screwdriver hidden in an interesting place.

You can't keep a belt, for obvious reasons. You also can't have shoes with laces.

Typical lock-down wards are occupied by patients doing the thorazine shuffle and staff watch the locked doors like hawks. The locals must love this hospital.

So what you're saying is that the Metalocalypse episode where Nathan Explosion becomes governor of Florida isn't that far off the mark?

As a sometime veteran of the other side of the psych ward: They keep the thermostat at about 45 degrees in those places, and you get really really cold. Also once you've been there a day or so, the last thing you want is tight uncomfortable clothing; so if you're there voluntarily or have family/friends to bring you clothes, you want something warm and comfy you can curl up and cry in.

If you're an involuntary resident with nobody who loves you, then you get whatever the County has handy; and sweats are cheap and abundant.

Psych wards suck, even the nice private ones; County wards are so nasty and scary I'd rather be in jail. (and yes, I've been in both TYVM)

"From a security standpoint, they need to beef up security a little bit," neighbor Clarence Mallory said. "My major concern is the fact that this is a family oriented neighborhood and there are kids that are constantly in the streets around here."

The strangest thing about this article, in my opinion, is the calmness of the neighbors that are commenting to the press. The man walks by security and the neighbors think, "hmmm. 10th time? Well, maybe they could do a little better in the security department. On dangerous you say? Poor guy..."

Never heard of that "Baker Acted" phrase, so I had to search what that meant. I think it's stupid to use it.

Anyway, I admit being in a psychiatric place in 1991 as a kid of 17...and I thought I was cool in helping another kid escape.
