CitizenTed: They can have my Irish Coffee when they pry it from my cold dead hands!

Actually, the headline's a bit misleading: it has to be packaged with both alcohol and caffeine. So Irish Coffee is fine, Mexican Coffee (or anything else made with coffee liqueur) isn't.

TFA:
Caffeine is not on the agency's list of ingredients that may be legally added to alcoholic beverages, Sharfstein said in a telephone press conference.

Yet there's no mention of drinks like coffee liqueurs or kahlua, which have been marketed for ages, being a problem. They seem to just be targeting the carbonated malt beverages where caffeine has been explicitly added. I'm not sure why they consider one worse than the other, but that's what they're targeting.

The bar I regular uses this as their shot of choice. Gotta love any booze where the manufacturer recommends cutting people off after 3 of them.

From one of their linked study reports:
"What's different from alcohol alone is the subjective feeling of intoxication," said Dr. O'Brien. "You feel less drunk when you drink an energy drink with alcohol."

You mean like when people chase alcohol with coffee in an attempt to sober up like they've done damn near forever? So should you then ban bars from selling coffee?

The manufacturers have 30 days to respond to the letter, which requested them to produce supporting data and information showing that caffeine in their products is GRAS [Generally Regarded as Safe] or prior sanctioned.

Dear FDA,

Go ask Juan Valdez or John Pemberton if you regard caffeine as GRAS.

Signed,

Logic

PS - Does this mean my Van Gogh Double Espresso and Patron XO Cafe are on the chopping block, too?

FTA: "The letter cited research indicating that the combination drinks heightened the risk of motor vehicle accidents and sexual assaults, Sharfstein said."

To a progressive this makes sense. It's not enough to outlaw criminal behavior, we must outlaw all activities that might, maybe, under some circumstances, lead to criminal behavior. If you agree with laws against drunk driving, you should agree with this.

24 oz. can with 10% Alcohol and more caffeine than Red Bull that's sold at 7-11 for less than $4. I'm surprised they got away with it for this long.

make me some tea: What liberals do you know who want the government involved in every aspect of their lives? I don't know any.

They probably all live in that same fictional place where all the townsfolk are harassed on a daily basis by "radical atheists," every college kid wears a Che T-shirt, and stores are "forced" to greet their customers with "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas."

You know, that terrible, magical place that only exists in the minds of "conservatives."

That said, f*ck the FDA.

I can't find a copy of a letter "signed by 18 AG's plus a city attorney", but here's a copy (pops, .pdf) of the letter sent from the NAAG to the FDA.

The AG from CT is a Dem. The AG from UT is a Repub. The AG from Guam identifies as "non-partisan". There's no more perfect way to get a tie.

I found an article that indicated that the aforementioned city attorney is from San Francisco, who is a Dem.

What I don't get is the "marketing to youths" angle so many of these guys put forth. I'm 35 years old. I like cartoons and bright shiny packaging. Cartoons aren't the exclusive reign of kids (see: Adult Swim). Also, bright shiny things appeal to my sense of ADD.

I wondered the same thing. And last I knew, it was still against the law to sell to minors anyways. Maybe the great SF city attorney should be trying to convict the people breaking the law fby selling to minors. Lets make more laws and not enforce the ones already on the books.

Mrs. Love Zombie still tells the story about the day in college when I mixed a 2 liter of Jolt with a bottle of Southern Comfort. She said I was the most wide-awake, wasted drunk individual she'd ever seen. I kept waking her up wanting to talk more, but I couldn't form words. So I'd lay back down. Then I'd start talking again.

There was a comedian years ago who described why cocaine was a bad drug to do on a date. He noted that you get a gram or so figuring you'll go out, do some lines, come back to your place, she'll be all over you. But instead all of a sudden it's 3am, she's sitting on the edge of your bed, you're both fully clothed, and she's rambling "...and then, when I was in third grade...".

Yeah, I was apparently something like that.

You know, that "-ine" suffix basically means "active chemical in." As in caffe + ine, "active chemical in coffee." I knew an American-imperialism zealot who claimed that Latin Americans chewed coca leaves, but didn't use cocaine; that's like saying "I drink coffee, but I don't use caffeine." (Of course, they could be decocainated.)

/Isn't Coca-Cola the only authorized importer of coca leaves? Something about "the federal government being bribed to back a monopoly," or something like that.

Sure, coffee can be decaffeinated. Coca can be decocainized.

I think Coca-Cola is the only authorized importer of coca..but other products that use decocainized coca leaves are outside of the US. Agwa is imported as is Red Bull Cola.
