Coming soon: Clint Malarchuk, Richard Zednik and Adam Burish all make a special trip to his bedside to point and laugh and call him a pussy.

On the leg? Clint Malarchuk frowns upon your shenanigans. (Pic linked due to copious amounts of blood.)

Did the new skate-sharpening method contribute to the injury?

Look at how the rest of the team has treated his goaltending abilities, then tell me he doesn't deserve to sit and let the team stew until they get their shiat together.

Burn_The_Plows: Damn you Maxx!

Sorry. :P I just read this expecting a far more gruesome injury, given the precedent set for spurting skate-slices in the league. I mean, come on...a cut on the leg? Unless it opened up his femoral artery to the point where he was geysering gore all the way back to the box, rub some dirt on it and keep skating, Nancy. This is the NHL, for chrissakes, not some pickup Ice Capades BS. If you're not bleeding by the third period, you're getting paid too much.

Wow - five days to a green light?

I guess that means he will only be out 3-5 weeks.

But seriously though, even through all that padding he still managed to bleed through along the ice.

Interesting not was that he doesn't wear the thigh guards? Or is it the knee riser?

My goalie pads don't have a knee riser, and I got hit by a puck just above the knee when I was down. I couldn't walk for about 2 days. I have to wear knee pads now until I invest in a pair of leg pads with risers.

But interestingly enough, if he doesn't wear those, I'm supprised he hasn't had more injuries.

I bet he will wear them now.

swahnhennessy: Ward's the lucky one. He got out.

This.

I watched the Canes last night against my better wishes and wished I hadn't. I was thinking of going to a game as well, but I'd probably see better hockey staying home and going to see the Charlotte Checkers (ECHL).

Preach it. If they put half the heroics into a normal game that they did into protecting Legace from shots, we'd be on top right now.

The cut is down into the muscle supposedly. I'm sure he'd like to play but he wouldn't be able to at a competitive confident level until it heals.

Also, I don't think Rick Nash uses that new skate cut but even if he did it wouldn't be contributing to worse cuts. Sharp is sharp.

2009-11-12 04:32:53 PM
That wasn't a cut. Someone hit Cam Ward in the groin with their skate and they mistook his vagina as a cut.

Drakin020:

It was the inner thigh, there's no padding there
just hockey pant material -> socks/pants material -> sport shorts for the cup

those knee things are to cover the gap between hockey pant and leg pad when a goalie is down. this was higher up and to the side

2009-11-12 05:01:38 PM
I remember a Wings game where Neil Wilkinson fell down, Bob Probert jumped over him to avoid falling, and nearly cut Wilkinson's nose off.

It was so bad that Probert actually skated back over to check on the poor bastard.

I always thought the girdle covered that area though. I mean, I guess it could have been to the side of the knee riser where the girdle stops?

I bet Clint Malarchuk shows up at his bedside and calls him a pussy. Man got his carotid artery slashed and was back on the ice in practice 4 days later, and actually playing a week after that.

I've got Ward on my fantasy team and I was glad he got injured (in the context of that game). In fact, I'd remarked a few days prior to him going down that I wished he would. He was killing me.

I've also lost Franzen, Markov, and Booth (big deal). But it doesn't matter as everyone in my league (or any league, for that matter) is dealing with just as many injuries to the same caliber of players on their own teams.

Which brings up the fact that so many guys are injured this season. It's like all the star injuries usually reserved for a season happened in the first month.

/// It sure looks like the edges have finer points on them to me.

My son has had it done. He says its a bit different and takes some getting used to, but you really can glide easy on that new cut, but it loses the edge sooooo fast that you need to have them re-sharpened after almost every skate. Not really worth it to get used to it, then go out of town to a tournament that doesn't have that sharpener, and then have to go back to traditional.

I only saw the replay once, but I thought it was the inner thigh not too many inches from his family jewels

I'm no goalie, and I could be wrong with custom equipment out there, but since the cut went through so deep it makes sense there was no padding in the way

Keeping these stitches photos relevant to the hurricanes,

cdn.nhl.com

That day, he was traded to the Canes, had to get on the first flight out, landed, got in a cab with Ron Francis who briefed him on the team's system as they drove, arrived at the arena where he hastily got dressed during warmups and played that night, got his face clipped with a stick, got it torn open and got 40 stitches.

Think you had a hectic day?
