Good. And I'm glad they threatened the wife with deportation, and I'm sorry that there probably won't be any jail time for the guy. They deserve far worse than is going to happen to them. And part of any sentence they receive should be that they can never, ever, in any way, shape, or form, earn any sort of money or other payment that in any tangible way relates to this entire thing. In fact, they should each have to lose a finger every single time they end up on camera. Throw them in the woods and let them live out their lives as hermits. That's how you punish attention whores.

They're not both going to get off with just probation.

They're going to put him away, and give her heavily supervised probation.

They're not just going to get the one charge, either. They're going to cop to the one with the Larimer County people, and while they're waiting for that, the FBI and the FAA are going to want to talk to them.

/this is the only situation ever in which those words can be strung together into a question that is perfectly sensible and relevant

I really wish news outlets would stop referring to this as a "saga". Norse mythology and epic Viking tales are sagas. Lame attention-whoring hoaxes lasting two hours are not.

Not sure if you're being snarky or serious, but I like the cut of your jib.

Actually, I'd recommend that the judge find the woman guilty of the felony charge but suspend her deportation. If she ever gives an interview or goes on a television show again, the sentence (including the deportation) are immediately carried out.

I still cannot wrap my mind around this family of weirdness. First, you sign up to be on a TV show that deliberately splits your family up. Then, you pull a stunt that ends up with your family being split up, but this time, not on TV. If you want to break up the family, just do it like a gazillion other people do it. Go on Divorce Court and be done with it.

2009-11-12 04:37:47 PM
Good. Make them pay for the searches that were performed on their behalf. All those helicopters and crews are expensive.

Furthermore, there's the idea that someone should not be allowed to benefit monetarily from a crime they commit. So they should not be able to sell any interviews with (or pictures to) sleazy tabloids, etc., over this.

Oh come on, the media loved this, hoax or not. For two hours every media outlet, Fark included, basked in the joy of relentless eyeballs or repeated refreshes. And to top it off Wolf Blitzer gets to be the Edward R. Murrow of the whole thing when his "relentless pursuit of the truth" caused the charade to be uncovered. He's probably lobbying for a Pulitzer right now.

Police and EMTs got to run around north central Colorado actually with a thought that they might be doing something interesting, rather than the mundane traffic stops and domestic violence calls that permeates their every day work. They were romping around, organizing search parties, riding ATVs...they love that crap.

Who the hell was harmed by this? Slap the parents on the wrist, give them a hefty, but not outrageous, fine and stop all the sanctimonious drivel.

Your time wasted? Please, you lead a worthless existence at a worthless job. This was the highlight of that day for you. Was completing your TPS cover letter really that much more important?

I truly don't understand all the hate for this family. So they're attention whores who want their own show. So?
We have no problem with dozens of other no talents who are EXACTLY the same (John and Kate, Kardashian family, The Hillz, etc.)
At the very least, these people pulled a great prank, one that fooled almost everybody, kept us all entertained for a couple hours, and gave us here at Fark one of the best threads ever.
That's way more entertainment than I've gotten from any of these other bullshiat reality show stars.
Amazing how butt-hurt people get just because they were fooled. No one got hurt, get your panties out of a wad.
Give 'em their own show. Then ignore them.

FTFA - The Heenes' attorneys said prosecutors have agreed to a sentence of probation with the possibility of up to 90 days in jail for Richard Heene and up to 60 days in jail for his wife.

I suppose I can live with that. They're bound to learn their lesson even if they only get half that time and the kids will (hopefully) be taken care of by someone sane in the meantime.

FTFA - "Mayumi Heene is a citizen of Japan. As such, any felony conviction or certain misdemeanors would result in her deportation, even though her husband and children are Americans," the statement said.

Damn. How long before she fills out the paperwork to become an official citizen? And will even a misdemeanor charge get in the way of that?

To mobilize that many emergency services for absolutely no reason; yes, the penalty should be very severe. This isn't speeding, this is drawing all emergency resources away from where they might really be needed. This isn't about 'EXTREME JUSTICE', it's about setting a precedent for douchebags that might do something so stupid in the future.

I don't think that you are defending the douche, but you have to believe that douchedad deserves something more than probation.

You're right, I'm not defending them. I just don't think they're dangers to society. We let hardened murderers and rapists out of jail on good behavior, yet we imprison tweetledee and deport tweetledumb? Something's not right. Garnish their wages for a while to pay for S&R and keep em from profiting from the situation and we're done.

spartacus_prime: In a perfect world, the father would be forced to pay for:
* The time and money spent by police, firefighters, ambulances, etc. responding to this
* The money wasted by the media in reporting this
* The therapy that kid will need when he gets older, and
* Wasting our time for a few hours.

If only...

A family with no visible means of income? I suspect they rely a lot on social services. Haven't the taxpayers suffered enough?

Saber6: Doctor Funkenstein: Did we ever get to the bottom of which one of them it was who farted during that first interview with Larry King, where that little Falcon kid spilled the beans about their balloon hoax?

/this is the only situation ever in which those words can be strung together into a question that is perfectly sensible and relevant

The Goog agrees: No results found for "spilled beans fart balloon".

Will Spilled Beans Fart Balloon be the subtitle of the Forensic Files episode dedicated to finally unmasking the farter?

Chuck Norris caning each of their upturned rear ends till there's a piddle-puddle around their feet.
I would watch that show.

Mini Ditka: To mobilize that many emergency services for absolutely no reason; yes, the penalty should be very severe.

If he had willfully and maliciously intended for that many emergency services to be mobilized, then I might agree. But I think he and his wife were simply too clueless to anticipate the consequences.

You yourself describe his actions as "stupid" rather than "malicious," and I think that says something. Shouldn't we reserve maximum penalties for the worst criminals? Those who act with extreme malice, repeat offenders, etc?

I'm under the impression that his wife shoulda been shipped off.

The kids should be raised in crappy foster homes,

and he's gonna learn how to enjoy man-love in the big house

What a bunch of tools

Not asking for maximum penalty here; but asking for something severe. Yes, jail time; maybe 6 months. I don't want the guy to die, but there should be something that sets a precedent that attention whores like this will not be tolerated.

There is too much going on, bad ways, for douchebags to pull shiat like this.

Has to be more severe than 6 months.

I believe that the average attention whore would say to themselves "6 months in jail? No big deal. I can spent that time writing my... you know... book thingie that tells about what I done done.".

2 or 3 years would do it. And a mandatory yearly ass pounding.

The time wasted arguement is stupid. The money wasted and diversion of than many resources so that some guy could get some air time on the other hand....

Other than being an asshole attention whoring criminal, he wasted our tax dollars and actually worried some of the more emotionally sensitive people that actually thought some little kid could die because of his dad's stupid project, which is illegal to fly in the first place.

Hit them with everything ya got. Perhaps go less hard on the mom in exchange for them never doing anything in the public eye again, so that the kids don't have to go to cps while both their parents get sexually abused in prison.
Oh, and sell everything they own and distribute it depending on how much money this cost each of the various dept's and offices that the tax payers paid for.

/Woo, I am kind of ruthless tonight.

I don't buy that for one second. They no doubt anticipated a huge press and media mob scene; they would have done things to ensure that, like, um, calling THE MEDIA BEFORE CALLING 911.

Mayumi Heene is a citizen of Japan. As such, any felony conviction or certain misdemeanors would result in her deportation, even though her husband and children are Americans," the statement said.

I'm glad this nation is still so concerned about protecting it's borders from criminals from other countries.
