The remains of a German artillery embankment after shelling from Allied forces at Pont du Hoc, overlooking Omaha and Gold Beaches, Normandy, France. Oh, and 50+ years of weather.

This is part of an abandoned complex of military outposts, observation towers and fortifications in the Marin County headlands.

Yup, it's the same site in Marin County as the other two I posted this week. This one is looking south towards San Francisco. The huge broadcast tower on Twin Peaks is visible in the distance on the larger version.

Our former neighbor's house. It went up on January 27th last year. No one was seriously hurt, although the owner broke his wrist falling off of the roof while trying to initially put it out. The house is still a charred hole in the ground, they never rebuilt.

I felt bad for the fire fighters. While fighting it, the temp was around -10, with 30 mph sustained winds, and 50mph gusts. They were there fighting it for about 10 hours. The wind kept it smoldering and blowing large embers for a few days. After the fire, the owners put up signs blaming the fire fighters for not saving the house. You can see two firefighters in front of the house spraying it down in this picture.

The pre-fire house can be seen in the photo here.

Bayport/Pine Island Fire. A lightning strike started the fire and 600+ acres of brush and trees burned. The fire jumped the road in many spots and the homes and businesses were evacuated. This sign points to Pine Island Beach and has since been replaced. It is located near the historic Bayport Inn.
