bodyshots: explain how hard it is to just say 'yeah im coming, alone' and meet up with your lesbian lover there and have a randy good time?

how hard is that?

If her girlfriend doesn't go to that school? Pretty hard.

for you to defend her and say 'oh no, shes just expressing herself, how could she know there would be a problem?!!' is just stupid and naive.

She shouldn't have to pretend to be someone else to protect someone's precious sensibilities.

Your narrow vision of the issue is just stupid and naive.

Are you stupid? How does the "lesbian lover" get in? She can't just "meet up" with her. The girlfriend is not a student. She can't in unless she is a date of a student. Try reading sometime. It's very enlightening.

jennies1897: My best friend was stood up on prom night by some jackass in our Junior year. I told her I'd go with her and we'd get piss drunk together and bash him all night (I was kind of one of those people who hated school functions and had boycotted it but would lift the boycott if it'd make her feel better). She found a male date though so it was a nonissue. The thought that it would've bothered someone never occurred to me at the time.

And to think, my bringing my 21 year old male friend to my senior prom was a source of gossip. People need to mind their own damned business.

I took my 21 year old boyfriend to my senior prom. This was back about 5 years ago, and we had a little bit of problem getting in because he didn't have his ID on him, but everything worked out okay.

I don't remember my school having such control over what went on at the prom. It was paid for by private subscription and held off-campus. You bought your ticket and your date's ticket if you had one, and as long as you had the $$ you were in. Your date could be Godzilla as long as your money was just as green.

There's really no evidence of AW in this case. The school has a "screening process" for prom dates who don't already go to the school, so she was required to tell them who she was bringing.

No. No, I do not dig.

These girls are in high school. We are supposed to be teaching them how to navigate in this world.

If you teach them that you just have to STFU and pretend that you're not who you are and then sneak around and be that, then THAT IS WHAT THEY WILL LEARN.

I would rather teach them that when something is wrong, you CHANGE IT. If it cannot be changed, by god, you FIGHT until enough people join you. If you cannot go with your girlfriend to prom, then by god, you do not go to prom and pretend not to be what you are.

Children learn what we teach them. I want to teach them to fight for justice and equity.

Okay, justice, equity, fairness, hope, change, yada yada yada.

That comment may have been some serious trolling, and rather inelegantly put, but there's a very large part of me that thinks that whole "Civil War" thing was a gigantic mistake. Maybe we should have just let them secede, wished them the best, fortified the shiat out of the new border, and turned the south into our version of East Germany, fit for cheap labor, agriculture and the occasional vacation in Florida. Because that's how they would have ended up.

Then, when some southern redneck pulls a stunt like this, we could just sneer from the north and called him a foriegn piece of shiat redneck, instead of feeling shame and embarrassment that this asshole, and others just like him reside in the same country as the northerners.

bodyshots: if she doesnt like the rules, either move or do something to get the rules changed.

It's interesting how bigots always apply a double-standard. Discriminating against a student based on race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation is unconstitutional. It's against the rules to which the Department of Education must comply.

If this principal doesn't like these rules, he should move.

But then, I don't expect you to support rules when they prove you're a dumbass.

Wow, have things tightened up for going to school functions. We didn't have a prom - exactly, but the 2 events we did have, which were both off the campus of the school, but were sponsored by them, were a ton slacker than this. You bought your ticket for yourself, or yourself and your date, and you went. No pre-approval. No worries about what sex your date was. The only thing they really cared about was that nobody show up TOO drunk (or for that matter LEAVE too drunk).

We had people dragging dates along like my brother's 26 year old friend Limpin' Larry, or somebody's cousin visiting from England, or the father of somebody's 2 year old (who lived out of town) or whatever.

We did have same sex couples attending, but mostly it was because it was cheaper per person to take 2 as a couple than 2 singles, so people would go together as dates to get a better price.

I have no idea what has happened to the "Land of the Free" in the last 25 years, but things are so much more rigid and controlled than they were in my day.

What a retard I was in high school. I went to my junior prom with my first girlfriend and had an ok time. Afterwards she wanted to go to an after party and get drunk/high, I said no and got her home by her curfew. Needless to say I was a good kid in highschool and didn't really drink or get laid for that matter. Turns out the girl was a fuc*ing whack job but this story COULD have been much better had I not been such a boy scout.

We broke up shortly after.

She slept with many fellas immediately after.

She was mormon and hid her sexual appetite from me very well.

Her vajayjay smelled like fish and she now has 4 kids.

I hope theyu manage to arrange a solution that brings a satisfactory conclusion to all involved. Zabbadizzat: Ok, I get it, Three Crooked Squirrels. I guess that is a bit of a pecker. That isn't right. I still don't think her parents should let her put holes in her face yet, but that's neither here nor there. As long as they can't do any rub dancing like the guy/girl pairings, then I don't see where it should be a problem.

I'm curious why you think others should live up to how you think they should live? Are you willing to submit to other people telling you how to live? Have already done this by trying to conform to someone else's norm?

See you can do whatever you want with your life, and you're free to make fun of people for doing things differently than you would, but then you also have to put up with comments from other people who think you're a douche because you think you should be able to tell other people how to act.

It's a free country, and we're just as free to make fun of you as you are to make fun of other people. So thanks for sharing how you think things should be run. I, for one, still think you suck at life.

The reason I think you suck at life is because you are intolerant. You don't want to see people with piercings so they shouldn't be allowed to get em. You don't want lesbians to be able to be openly lesbian so they should have to sneak.

This is The South, with capital letters. A lot of people don't get it. Either you're a Christian or you're not in The South (if you're openly gay you don't get to be Christian btw)... I taught at a school in Southern Appalachia with a rule against "displays against public affection," that was only enforced when homosexual couples kissed in the hallways. Can't say this is much of a surprise at all and I have to commend this girl for standing up for herself. That takes some serious cahones. Anyone with a religious argument about what should or shouldn't happen in public institutions should look up the word "separation," as in "separation of church and state."

Before attacking my post, please note that although I am not trolling, I am making certain assumptions based on the article and past experiences that may or not be valid in this case.

I suspect that this student is using her sexual orientation as a shield to protect herself from the consequences of her disruptive behavior. To my mind, when she chose to wear the "I'm a lesbian" sticker, she knew it would be disruptive, controversial, and deliberately provocative. In fact, I'm willing to bet that she was trying to provoke exactly this kind of reaction when she wore the sticker and then "asked" the principal for permission. It wouldn't surprise me if the request was really more of a declaration of intent with the primary purpose of forcing the principal's hand. Like many young people she probably sees most adult authority figures as arbitrary, hidebound, and completely out of touch with reality. While this is certainly true in some cases, more often it is the youth who doesn't have the degree of knowledge and life experience to understand the adult's reasoning. In making any inappropriate behavior on her part a sexual orientation issue, she has gained both sympathy and protection from her own actions. But being a lesbian does not give you permission to behave badly.

HOWEVER... even if what I said is 100% accurate (an iffy assumption at best), the principal has handled this entirely wrong. First, and let me make this perfectly clear to people who hate my earlier response: This girl should have the legal right to bring her girlfriend to the prom. Second, if her behavior was a problem, he should have handled it as much as possible without reference to her sexual orientation. This undermines his case and just gives her the support and attention she wants. Of course, this is again assuming that her behavior was actually inappropriate. Finally, his threat to cancel the event was simply the move of a man desperately trying to retain his power for the sake of retaining power; an obvious ploy which undermines his position further.

To sum up, I suspect this student has brought some of her problems onto herself, and is trying to use her orientation to avoid the consequences. Well, that's a high school student for you. But on the other side, the principal seems to have handled it badly from the beginning, and deserves the situation her find himself in now.

It's important to remember that schools have more legal restrictions on what they can and cannot say to the press at this stage of a case. Undoubtedly we are hearing more of the the student's slant than the school's. While it is possible that the principal is simply a bigoted dictator, I suspect there is more to the situation than we are hearing about. Nevertheless, from the information we have, I am inclined to side with the student on this: just let her bring her girlfriend to the prom.

I'll contribute to feeding the troll.

You usually don't get to decide which school you go to. It's based on where you live.

I don't think that Parental Guardians would be willing to
a.) locate a new house in the next school district over, or since similar beliefs are held by neighboring principals, a different state
ai.) locate new jobs if the move is sufficiently distant
b.) buy and pay for the new house
c.) move to the new house
d.) sell old house

Sure, though a surprising number of them fit into one of two categories. 1) They biatch about things and keep to themselves on the porch of their trailer 2) Get their rocks off by getting on school boards because it's the only public office to which they can be elected by getting out the vote from their redneck family and church.

Same way in Paris, TN. Last year my soph. daughters senior female friend wanted to take her to the Prom, not as announced lesbians but just so they could go together... Paris, TN has a strict "no same sex couples" policy for all school activities; a girl caught holding hands with another girl received 15 days of alternative school a few weeks ago.
Meanwhile, in a town of 17,000, TWO (2) teachers have been sent up the river for sexual misconduct with a child since the school year started.
