Dr Atala hopes the approach will work with other organs.

"We have made clitoral tissue in the past," he said.

What is this clitoral organ you speak of?

This has some interesting implications if available to the general public... and if it could be accomplished quickly... at a party.. on the first bastage that passes out. Would sure make the ol` "marker penis" on the forehead rather lame in comparison!

When you've seen (and slept with) the endless parade of perfectly toned and sculpted female bodies that Hef has... you probably need something special to pique your interest. SRSLY, grow up, Hef, you're an embarrassment to men everywhere.

ON TOPIC... if they can use tissue engineering to grow a (functional) complex hydraulic organ like the penis, that's a big step to being able to grow a lot of other things the same way. I don't see this as just phallocentric medical science.

Okay, so this sounds reasonably cool, but I have just one great big freakin' problem with it...

Where do you get "penis scaffolds"? This guy had them available because he cut them off perfectly functional male rabbits.

But this seems kinda like a chicken-and-egg problem - "Good news! We can grow your right eye back! We just need to remove your left eye, hollow it out to make a scaffold..."

In humans they'll probably use the cartilage of an organ donor if that part's still necessary.

Actually there's research going into making synthetic scaffolds for applications like this. Also, they could get the scaffold from cadavers.

So we decide that the penis is the organ that needs grown first from stem cells? Not a liver, heart, lung, or even an eye....a penis.

Good news for the chinese I guess. I'm starting a deer penis soup company. It's like your old deer penis soup only now with more penis!!! Our soup has twice the penis as the other guy's soup.

Penises make a good model organ. It's a complex organ with numerous tissue types. It can be removed without killing the research animals (hint, lab animals are expensive and come with a shiat-load of regulations) and there are some easy tests for function. It makes a good model to prove that these techniques work. Now these tissue-generating techniques can be used to start generating livers, hearts, lungs, or eyes.

FTFY.

The market for that would be huge.

Dr Atala focused on the penis because he is a paediatric urologist, and has specialised for years in disorders and congenital defects of the bladder and sexual organs. has a small peener and his wife is threatening divorce if he doesn't do something about it.

"That was the inspiration for this work," he said.

The greatest scientific minds of the time, while aware of the problem, where too busy developing a cure for baldness and a pill for a longer lasting erection.

FTA: "We are seeing babies born with deficient genitalia all the time. There are no good options."

So the takeaway from the article is if this pans out in humans, expect high-end sports car sales and Republican Party voter ID to plummet.

From a pure engineering point the penis or clitoris makes a lot of sense since they are both straight forward organs, as compared to basically all the other organs with the exception of skin. Add to that they both are on the outside of the body making surgery much less complex, it all adds up to good starting point.

Side-note: Viagra was supposed to be a heart medicine before it was an erection medicine.
