onebadgungan: Fano: Uchiha_Cycliste: NeauxFear: Catholics should try to give the Church of Scientology the respect any well-established religion deserves. The fact that child-molesters are against abortion just seems weird to me, but that's another discussion for another day.

So let me ask you, prick, do you know what one of the key elements in molesting children is?

Surprise?

Surprise and Fear.

How did this one comment illicit so many responses? The answer is they are kids damnit! they can't get pregnant!

2009-11-10 01:43:04 AM

Fireproof: Egalitarian: The Catholic Church has done good but it has a lot to answer for also - in modern times, trying to restrict birth control and abortion, and covering up systematic child molestation.

Influencing entire nations to have more children than can be supported is a rather large evil, because it leads to starvation, disease, crime. This also oppresses women in particular in third world countries. They often don't have a choice about being married off and forced to have sex - at least give them a chance to decide how many babies they have and when they have them.

\popes = fistulas

9/10. Nice, very subtle. Got a bite already, I see.

I wasn't trolling, well my slashy was a bit extreme but ... the Catholic Church sure isn't helping with the whole "impregnate 12 year old girls who aren't ready to bear children yet" thing. If you can't keep families from getting rid of their girls as soon as they start menstruating, at least give them some birth control for cry-ay.

Ral: what_now: Josh Wheadon has never made a watchable episode of television, and the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series wasn't nearly as good as Dan Brown's books.

I may not like all his TV shows, but at least I know how to spell Joss Whedon's name.

What leads you to believe this? The leaders were in charge of farking up the molestation fiasco. The church led the inquisition, the church did nothing to save the jews in WWII. I can see the ministries helping their communities. I'm really curious as to why you believe the opposite to be true.

Christianity, Islam and Judaism are basically the same thing in my eyes, with just different flavors- all of them consider women second class citizens, all of them have issues atrocities in the name of "their people" (although to be fair, the Jews do both of these the least).

This is just asinine.

I'm not going to refute that Christianity, which I was a part of and have since walked away from, denigrates women - it's mainly the Evangelicals that practice this, but there is some flavor of it in even the lighter shades. Islam is nothing like Christianity. Judaism doesn't even know what Christianity looks like.

Christianity is Judaism 2.0; Islam is Christianity Vista.

But seriously, the three principal Abrahamic traditions are very closely linked. They all worship the same god, they all revere the Old Testament, Islam honors Christ and respects Jews and Christians as "People of the Book." You may disagree with the poster's claim, and it is indeed a bit simplistic, but "asinine" it ain't.

I think that if JPII had hung on another decade, or that black dude was current pope instead of Ratzinger, these policies would be changed. You'll get no argument from me that it's farked up. However, I'm hopeful that the next pope will turn things around and do more to care for his Churches individual members over some stupid doctrines.

Yeah, I kinda regretted that word after I posted.

I still think that, while you can break anything down to component parts to make it look like anything remotely similar; i.e. all religions are the same because they all force you to believe in something, etc - there are no true comparisons between the three. I'll concede they have a similar base, but that's about it.

2009-11-10 01:49:53 AM

Egalitarian: All religions seem like a pile of ooga-booga to me. I don't care if you're staid Lutherans in a swanky new church, you might as well be naked in a rainforest sacrificing chickens to the snake god. And that goes for Islam and Judaism and your little dog too.

Neopaganism is just so retarded, it pretty much speaks for itself. Same with Scientology.

We're all gonna die and be dead forever. Whether there was an intelligent self-aware entity that created the universe and still exists, I highly doubt It is anything we humans can easily understand or construct a valid religion around. And what's the point anyway? Why would such a powerful being concern itself with the affairs of tiny ants?

Because He LOVES you and has a PLAN for you!

hatelabs: If the church "REALLY CARED" for people they would allow themselves to be taxed. Taxing all religious income and holdings would eradicate hunger in the US and could provide housing for all homeless people and education for all children not in school.

1. The U.S. government could eliminate the income tax, eliminate capital gains tax, not tax churches, and it would still have enough money to eradicate hunger, and provide housing and education for all in need.

The problem isn't a lack of resources... the problem is that why would any organization powerful enough to take 40% of your income at gunpoint give a shiat about helping the poor and needy?

The goal of the government is to steal your money, oppress you, and brainwash you until you are idiotic enough to believe the reason there are poor and hungry is because the government doesn't have enough money to help them.

2. There is a little known clause in the constitution that specifies the separation between Church and State. It is called the first amendment, and few advocates of sucking government cock such as yourself have heard of it.

The idea is, that if government is dependent on the church for funds, that gives the church extraordinary power over the government. Much like the U.S. government has a conflict of interest where it can't do anything to reduce oil consumption lest it lose the billions of oil tax revenue, a tax on churches would create a conflict of interest where by the government would have a financial incentive to actively promote religion.

This is why people who support legalizing marijuana, *WANT* the government to tax it. This is why people who support legalizing prostitution, *WANT* the government to tax it. I know in your simple-minded Marxist way, you think that you would be harming churches by taxing them, but fortunately the founding fathers where smarter than you and included a separation of church and state that precludes taxing churches.

God I love it when "strict constructionists" prove they have no idea what the actual text of the Constitution says. "Separation of Church and State" wasn't used by SCOTUS until 1878, and never appears in the First Amendment.
