Because Oregon and Iowa both lost to lesser teams than Alabama.

2009-11-08 02:55:35 PM
They lost by a small margin to a team that has a 50/50 shot of being in the national title game at this moment in time. And there was a lot of fail this weekend.

/19 votes for Navy? Frogdammit, voters.

As a Cincinnati resident, I'm getting a kick out of. .

Actually, I'm trying to figure out how / why Ohio State jumped to 10. I haven't followed them much this season, but was beating Penn State good enough to jump them to 10?

Hau Ruck: Actually, I'm trying to figure out how / why Ohio State jumped to 10. I haven't followed them much this season, but was beating Penn State good enough to jump them to 10?

No, but it's Ohio State. If Notre Dame had won they would have jumped to the top 15.

WTF?? USC must have a balloon up its ass! They barely beat a crappy Arizona St team 14-9 and still go up a slot. I hope Stanford punctures their flotation device.

Penn State is irrelevant. That's just more residual climb from their convincing win over New Mexico State, especially after the voters saw what the women at that school do.

Why is it that in the eyes of the pollsters Boise State's win against Oregon has lost its significance because of Oregon lossing to Stanford, but they can claim with a straight face that USC, a team that barely beat ASU and lost to Oregon, has improved?

Oh yeah, bias, that's it.

TommyBahama: USC is back in the top 10. ( ._.)

I complained about it last week and I'll complain again this week. There are certain teams (Ohio State, USC, Notre Dame) who start off ranked high every year. when they lose a game they don't fall very far and when they win the move up the rankings extremely fast. USC gets killed by Oregon, then when Oregon gets beat by a bad Standord team, USC jumps them and moves back into the top 10. It doesn't make a bit of sense.

I think a lot of this weeks rankings just goes to show what "labels" mean.

Does any other team with USC's results so far get an 11th ranking?

At least the voters finally to a T said "a four loss team shouldn't get any votes" (Oklahoma). Considering Oklahoma was still ranked last week with 3 wins, I am semi-surprised they didn't still get the 25 slot on a few stubborn ballots.

I agree about the comment on Navy... maybe not top 25 because of the schedule strength, but, should be around that 50 point range.

But the championship games start next weekend.... Big 10 championship game this Saturday (Iowa/Ohio St)

2009-11-08 07:08:21 PM
The national championship is entirely determined by the "meaningless" preseason polls.

Once you realize this fact you'll be much better informed.

For example, if TCU and Boise State had been ranked #1 and #2 in the preseason polls, they'd be headed to the national championship game (assuming they win out). But because Florida was ranked #1 in the "meaningless" preseason polls, they get to go.

2009-11-08 07:11:34 PM
I think the bigger question is why do you all enev look at the AP poll. Seriously it doesn't mean anything now that it's out of the BCS equation.

I think a lot of us are talking about the BCS poll that was posted earlier in the thread.

Let's examine the situation, shall we?

Let's say some omniscient being (whom we shall call God) were to come down, and rank teams. He is all-powerful and all-knowing so his rankings are 100% correct with no issues.

Now let's say the first and second ranked teams were to play each other. Because football has no ties, a team has to lose. And because God's ranking system is perfect, team 1 beats team 2. Following so far?

Now, where does this leave us? Is the number 2 team any worse than before they started the game? No, of course not. They were destined to lose because a team had to lose, and they were slightly worse than team #1, and slightly better than team #3.

So for the case of Alabama vs. LSU, if the rankings were correct and without flaw pre-game, is LSU worse now that they lost to a higher ranked team? I don't think so.

Of course, the BCS is with its many, many flaws, the biggest of which is preseason rankings lasting throughout the entire season. Let the teams get a few games under their belts and THEN rank them. Sure, BCS doesn't actually go live for a few weeks, but we all know that preseason rankings play a huge role in the BCS. Just ask USC =)

dletter: Does any other team with USC's results so far get an 11th ranking?

Not that USC doesn't field a great team every season, and I give them big props for actually scheduling some meat in their OOC games... but there are two 2-loss teams in the Pac-10. One of those teams beat the sh*t out of the other LAST WEEK, and the other is ranked higher. What?

dletter: But the championship games start next weekend.... Big 10 championship game this Saturday (Iowa/Ohio St)

Indeed. I hope Penn State ends up in the Outback Bowl, because that makes my wife want to go to Outback, and I like that once a year or so.

Except Cincy is in the Big East and could therefore play for the BCS championship. TCU and Boise State, however, just like Utah last year, are SOL.

The AP Poll isn't relevant to anything unless it selects a different national champion than the BCS.

I hate to find myself defending the SEC, but in the beauty contest that is college football, the case for LSU being the best 2-loss team in the nation is actually really good.

Just another example of SEC bias. Oklahoma got special treatment, but this is obnoxiously bad. A loss is a loss. Despite the bad calls they got outplayed by Florida, should of lost to a really bad Georgia team when they got the calls, and lost to Alabama with another questionable call.

At this point you should just send the SEC refs to the national championship, because they are perfect this season.

I will stop you right there. I now have that channel and about 70 channels I am not supposed to have after a Comcast guy came out today to replace our modem. He said we had the wrong filter. Thanks for giving us free cable, guy! I just noticed that and am very excited. No more looking for feeds for football, hockey, and later baseball games!

GT has barely beaten 4 teams, and 2 of those teams are in the top 25 currently. Iowa lost at home to a 6-4 team that had both of their QBs injured. Iowa has also barely beaten the likes of Northern Iowa , Arkansas State, and Michigan.

Nice try though.

I just meant that PSU was irrelevant to OSU's rankings jump. I would have loved to see JoePa get to another Rose Bowl.

Oh, and OU is going to do to PSU what they did to Pitt a few years ago -- play a pathetic offense-less game, then win on a Pick-6 in OT.

Oklahoma did not get any special treatment.

After their first loss they dropped 10 or so spots. After their second, a one point loss at number 10 Miami, they dropped 10 more sports after moving up 5 over the previous 4 weeks. There was never special treatment, these were huge drops and I don't remember OU moving up more than 2 spots in 1 week.

Their third loss came against 3rd ranked Texas and they lost by 3 points and dropped 4 spots.

Now they have their 4th loss and they dropped out. Where is the special treatment?

It took a while for them to drop out because they started so high. If weren't for injuries the preseason ranking might have turned out perfectly legitimate. But injuries, and referees are a part of the game.

I'm not saying the rankings aren't screwy on any given week, but I got no problem with LSU not dropping this week. There's still a few games left.
