Bah..

These kids have to walk for miles, at one point wading across a river to get to school.

Bah...

When I went to school I had to do it with my balls in a vice attached to seven feral cats.

Can't they just pool their money and get a boat?

It's the shortest scheduled flight in the world. They'll give you a certificate saying you flew it if you go. Last time I was there, Papa Westray (Papay, to the locals) had a population of 68 people.

Orkney is a beautiful place and I'd suggest visiting during the St. Magnus festival -- world-class entertainment for a week around the solstice.

Isn't there a village somewhere where the kids have to take a zipline to cross a canyon? I seem to recall it was so primate they used y shaped sticks as breaks to keep the speed manageable.

I misread, thought the ferry was discontinued. But after re-reading, suspension of service does imply it's a temporary thing.

Outer Qwghlm didn't have a school, so we were forced to mix with those sissies from Inner Qwghlm.
Thank the gods we didn't have to go to one of those poofter main-land schools.

Came here to say this, but you beat me to it. Loganair is a commercial carrier. Looks like the aircraft is a BN Islander.

And lots of the Tronna Islanders are pissed off that Porter is using the airport for commercial flights... I, on the other hand, think it's awesome.

I seem to recall a commercial flight between San Francisco and Oakland that took like 2 minutes back in the '70's. Then people woke up and realized there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to go to the East Bay.

Whoever designed those airports is a dick... they didn't even aim the runways at each other. There's a frigg'n turn!

I imagine one airport existed before the other, in which case it's easier to turn an airplane than to turn an airport.

It's six kids. You mean to tell me that nobody has a god damn boat that can carry six kids? There's only one boat in the Orkney Islands and it's under refurbishment??

Dire: There's only one boat in the Orkney Islands and it's under refurbishment??

If I remember right the water can be a bit rough around the Orkneys, like there are a significant number of days when a small boat couldn't even safely go from one island to another.

Runway direction is determined by dominant wind direction. So most likely the winds are not right to have the two runways point at each other.

Ah OK that makes more sense.

Hey why not use giant catapults to fling the kids from one island to another? Give them special airbag overcoats like Inspector Gadget so that they just pull the cord when they are about to impact so that they bounce harmlessly when they hit the ground.
