Ah, the ultimate lame thread...

A stupid, overrated sport that has fights that end so quickly that there's no point in watching it live because the highlights are almost as long as the fights, being hyped by a stupid website owned by a guy that apparently has Drew in his back pocket.

The fail is strong in this one.

I was happy seeing Mousasi win, too bad it wasn't an upkick from his back. I also would have liked to see all 1 minute of the women's bout

That fight had something for everyone: a solid performance and a crushing TKO for the Fedor fans, and jab resulting in a bloody nose for the "OMGZ, Fedor is a fraud!" idiot haters.

Seriously though, very good card overall for the TV debut. I don't know what's left for Mousasi in Strikeforce. As for Rogers, maybe Antonio Silva?

Congratulations.

Well, then. What did I say that was false? Here, I'll help you out.

1) The fights are ridiculously short.

2) The highlights of the fight are frequently as long as the fight itself.

3) SbB is a common source on the Sports tab, and inevitably causes someone to post a non-SbB link.

It seems your only objection is to my characterization of the sport as "stupid". It's not like I called it "armoured wankball" or anything. I at least expressed why I thought it was stupid. Sure, it was delivered with sarcasm, but hey...

Talk about putting everything "behind a punch."

This time, the fighter brought its full force to bear on his opponent.

I have never seen anything like it.

I unfortunately fell asleep after the first round of the Shields/Miller fight, but I managed to open my eyes before the second round was over. Too bad it was the second round of the Fedor/Rogers fight.

Great KO. Fedor's streak is still alive. And the online debates will rage on for another six months or so.

You mean the fight that went a decent length in to the 2nd of 3 scheduled rounds after a card that largely went to the scorecards?

2009-11-08 08:52:39 AM
Rogers got sloppy. Fedor leans his head down when he's about to throw those looping punches, and he just kind of stood there and didn't protect himself like he did in the first round when fedor leaned his head down.

I think the trick to beating fedor may be to close the gap, not let him tee off like that. Fight an ugly fight.

Hobodeluxe: Fedor had me worried after getting his nose broke early in the first round. he was bleeding all over the place. but damn that haymaker right was crushing.

The bridge of his nose was cut.
Rodgers had his very best chance with a fluke cut from a jab. Something caught on the bridge of Fedor's glove and cut some of the highly vascular skin there.

As such and Rodgers was getting worked despite the early chance advantage.. and went to sleep anyway.. we'll probably see him fight Antonio Silva. Fedor might go for Fabricio Werdum or hopefully his farky manager Finklestein won't hold up a Lesnar fight.

I mean a break could be bad, but in this exact case it was the outside cut that had me worried about a stupid stoppage.

Yeah, he's probably juicing (which I why I mentioned HGH). He's kicking ass in K-1 right now though, and that's where the $$ and interesting fights are for him at the moment. I expect he'll be back to fight Fedor soon enough (he did call him out recently). If not, who else does Strikforce have on their roster for Fedor to fight? He's already beaten Arlovski. Does he fight Werdum next? He'll need some time off since he broke his damn hand AGAIN last night (I kept telling my casual-MMA-fan friends that although Fedor doesn't have any major weaknesses, he cuts easily and breaks his hands often, and I was vindicated on both counts), which I think will give Overeem time to wrap up WGP and get ready to fight in the US again. He'll have plenty of time to get clean, and actually have a worthwhile payday for that fight.

/probably the longest post I've ever made here

Wrong, he leaned his head down after he started the punch in order to put everything into it. Dipping the head isn't a good indicator if by the time you realize he's doing it his fist is in your jaw.

Fedor didn't just telegraph that punch, he Western Unioned it. I'm amazed Rogers didn't see it coming, step aside, have a latte, then throw some of his own.

Fedor is a damn good fighter, no doubt...but Rogers' only 'notable' win to this point was glass-jaw Arlovski.

I don't feel like fact checking here, but I'm fairly certain Rogers wasn't even ranked in the top ten until AFTER the Fedor fight was announced, as though Fedor matching up with another "top ten heavyweight" was more appealing and was made to legitimize Fedor.

Not saying he needs legitimizing, but he's always going to have that "ducked the UFC" stigma over his head.

ihatedumbpeople: Fedor didn't just telegraph that punch

If you notice, Rodgers is an arm puncher. This isn't inherently bad, as Foreman and Dempsy were also arm punchers. Rodgers was telegraphing his punches. Rodgers was also using the same left to lead in over and over in the fight.

A really good, straight up counter to that is a over hand right, that is, if you are faster. You 1) block the shot with yours, and more importantly 2) land it faster.

Frankly, it was a straight up good choice, and you can clearly see the slow mo, Rodgers slow setup for it, and Fedor capitalizing.

2009-11-08 09:53:25 AM
If we look at Fedor's record, in 33 fights the only loss he has was due to a cut. We know that Fedor cuts very easily.

Apparently, the strategy for any future opponent should be....

1. Land at least 1 good punch to establish a cut
2. Run around the ring, clinch, and basically do anything you can to try and stall long enough for the fight to be stopped as a result of the cut.

If you can't do this, you will get knocked the fark out or submitted...period.

No, he actually dips his head down beforehand because he throws those punches like whips, which is why they're so devastating. It's a slight tell, it's not much, but it's there.

Rogers gassed out. I'm not sure what was wrong, but the difference between him in the first 3 minutes of the fight and the rest of the fight was just stunning.

He definitely telegraphed his punches, in fact none of them were even crisp or clean. He broke fedor's nose, cut him pretty bad, no one I think has done that (I could be wrong), but he should have focused on that. He should have done what boxer's do, when they see a weakness, when they see a cut, they target it. He should have just kept throwing jabs in his face, it MAY have thrown fedor off his game.

Oh well, there's no one fedor can fight that's intriguing right now.. so they'll probably throw him in with ricco rodriguez next.

That was a quick call by the ref. Of course, considering the league should be called "M-1 Emelianenko" because of how much they have riding on one fighter, it's no surprise they wanted all odds against his opponent.

lol definitely not an early stoppage.

when big john stopped it, rather than attempting to improve his position, rogers was still turtling.

Rogers, what the fark were you doing with your gloves down that close to your opponent? You know the guy has hitting power, and you know you can block it *if your gloves are up*.

That said, I think the stoppage was a little early. Yes, the hit was huge, but Rogers had his leg up to dampen the follow-up blow, and was covering effectively for the other two punches that were thrown before "Big Jon" stopped the match. Rogers was still defending himself intelligently. I would have let it go on at least a few more seconds to give him a chance to recover.

Instead, we got a bit of Fedor worship "OMG, he knocked the other guy down, he must be unconscious!" from the Ref.

If it was a quick call as you say, I'm sure Mr. Rogers would have mentioned it, through his tears I might add, during the afterfight q&a. He knows he got knocked the fark out, so move on. Anything that looked like a defensive posture after Fedor rang his bell was his nervous system making an autoresponsive reaction to his brain rattling around his skull like a rubber bouncy ball.
