What the hell? I don't even smoke and find smokers annoying but what the hell? This isn't Russia. This isn't Russia, is it, Danny? No, this isn't Russia.

Number one, kids don't smoke because it tastes good. They smoke to be cool. Second, EVERYTHING about the tobacco industry is about targeting children. No one in their right mind starts smoking as an adult. The candy cigs, the cartoon camel that looks like a cock for some reason, the anti-smoking ads on tv that are so obnoxious they would have made me want to smoke if I was a kid. It's all about getting the kids roped in early, before they know how retarded smoking is.

I usually find slippery slope arguments annoying but this piece of legislation sounds dangerous.

They should ban all coolers and fruit flavoured beer.

Especially the beer. That's a travesty.

People really shouldn't worry about this to much, 99% of that flavored tobacco is emptied out of the cigar and deposited on the ground. The empty shell is then filled with a natural herbal product and THEN smoked. This City is going absolutely insane with laws outlawing products that are already illegal for the people they are "protecting".

Couldn't you take this to court and beat it? It seems like a city can't do this? I don't know.

Oh yeah,

But if they don't know what's good for me, who does? I'm not smart enough to decide for myself.

So Menthol was allowed because that would have been racist?

I don't see why this is such a big deal.

Yeah, it's obvious that they are trying to hook kids into smoking, so why is it so bad to stop something that is just terrible for you?

You assume most new yorkers are smart.

This is the flaw in your argument.

The kids in my school all smoked Marlboro Reds or Camels anyway. Are they just trying to mess with the goth kids?

There's some signs of a resurgence of the idea among legal academics, but for the most part any "economic freedom" lawsuit is going to be DOA in the courts.

In my experience, people usually use the regular ones for that, not the flavored ones. Peach and grape swishers are just atrocious.

Do they honestly believe that the kids today are into rum-flavored cigars, or that they are sneaking into Nat Sherman to score the latest offering from CAO or Drew Estate?

no, I'm sure they're not, but I would be willing to be they are attracted by these:

Glad I don't live in NY. Seems completely asinine to include pipe tobacco.

This. That tobacco inside the flavored cigar? That's not for smoking. Hopefully this just teaches the young'ins to flavor their own honey wraps.

I've always wondered if the farmers who grow tobacco for Dutch Masters and similar gas station cigars know how pointless their job is.

If the picture in the article is anything to go by, they're trying to mess with people who like to smoke cigars named "Karma Sutra Splash."

Who names a cigar that anyway?

Maybe it's just growing up with a lot of snobby white trash, but if you smoked that stuff as a kid you got punched in the face. You didn't smoke things because of the cuteness of the packaging, you smoked whatever everyone else did to be cool.

It's not until college and a few classes in art history that kids start smoking that stuff.

And if there are exceptions to this, they are definitely in the minority.

Children are more influenced by the mass of negativity towards smoking with the inundation of "Truth" ads and such legislation rekindling the notion of cigarettes being cool due to appearing rebellious, independent, whathaveyou. How are you supposed to be cool with a smiling, smoking cherry on the pack or needing to guise the tobacco with sugary flavors? Those are the same lame children who drink Smirnoff Ice and syrup-filled vodaks.

I also think that because of these sort of laws, one of two things will happen:

1) Weed will be even easier to find, or at least, more widespread
2) Some smart kid with a drivers license and nothing to do will make the 3 hour trip to Delaware to buy tax free cartons of these things and make a kill...I'll see you all in 6 hours.

DNRTFA, but NYC's likely just getting ahead of the curve on this one. (pops)

not surprised it's Reason pushing it, the libertarians have been up in arms over this bit. correct me if i'm wrong on any of this, but the law serves three purposes:

1)gets rid of flavored cigs, which the anti-smoking lobbies have been attacking for years(feel-good legislation)

2)as Phillip Morris only makes menthol, full flavor, and tobacco blends, they're unaffected by this law, whilst their competition suffers the loss of several successful lines of product. note their strong support of the bill.(corporatist legislation)

3)bans flavored wraps, thus striking a blow against stoners to lazy to flavor their own wraps.(anti-weed legislation)

Flavored wraps are too sticky and rarely burn smoothly or evenly.

Damn, I am so glad I quit smoking 17 years ago, as I'd be plenty pissed off by this shiat. I was a pipe smoker for 24 years and one of my favorite tobaccos was a dark, black vanila flavored cavendish. It smelled like roasting marshmallows when lit.

OTOH, most of the popular, "drug store" flavored tobaccos (like that awful "Cherry Blend") were just crap, mostly due top the high moisture content to prolong shelf life, something on the order of 10% to 12%. Good quality tobacconist pipe tobacco was around 4%.

Of late, Des Moines just got its first "hookah bar", naturally up by Drake University. They've got all those cutsey flavored tobaccos including bubble gum flavored.

Yes, bubble gum flavored.

WTF?

Gaaaadam pussies.

I'm tempted to go in there and fire up one of their fru-fru hookahs with a nice bowlful of The Balkan Sobrannie and watch how fast that shiat clears the place out.

Dammit, if you are going to smoke, do it right.

we're assuming legislators are smart. they're just barely bright enough to realize what the things are designed for, not bright enough to realize that they suck at this purpose and won't really be missed.

clear cellulose wraps are fun though.
