I'm sure it's a terrible slur on the poor young man, but at 1:30am when he was heading to a party one suspects the presence of alcohol. All the people who have fallen the wrong way at this beauty spot in recent times have been students from out of town. Still, that doesn't exempt them from having a basic understanding of the laws of gravity and the difficulties of arriving on some rocks having taken the fast route down.

It is said to be close to the Old Course, but everything in St Andrews is close to the Old Course since it's such a small place. Maybe the best thing is to remove all the fences and walls and simply let those who want to fall, and those who don't be.

But the sad truth is that people die. Some through ill-advised actions, some through no fault of their own. Lots of us have had plenty of near misses, but for this guy it was too near, and he didn't miss.

Police said the incident happened at 1.35am on Friday morning and the student's body was washed up on the shore near the St Andrews Sea Life Centre 90 minutes later.

it's badly lit, badly fenced, and at areas where you are no where near the cliff you have a chance of slipping. (rain really wrecks that area almost daily).

To be honest people are surprised more people haven't died especially students who flock to St Andrews University.

No need to be so friggin' extreme, RockIsDead. Geesh. Bulldoze all cliffs into safe flat areas? Ridiculous. Keep the cliffs as they are. A more reasonable precaution would be to line the base of cliffs (and buildings) with giant inflatable air bags and to many every air bag with a team of EMTs. Now THAT is a reasonable solution!

I'm surprised this popped up on fark... anyway, those cliffs are high but there are fences and warning signs, and they are there for a reason. Unless this kid somehow cut through someone's private property, where the barriers between back garden and the cliffs may not be as high or as well marked, he put himself at risk by ignoring the danger and climbing over the fence.

It was bonfire night and I'm sure he was probably drunk, but there is no shortcut down to Castle Sands and it was incredibly foolish to try looking for one. Accidents occasionally happen on those cliffs once every year or couple of years, and it is always someone who climbed the fence.

Very sad loss of such a young guy though..
