SilentStrider: umm, isn't soy an important cash crop?

Soy is a cash crop because it's used to replace the nitrogen that corn takes out of the soil. The health benefits of soy are directly related to price of corn. Continuing to subsidize corn and burning it as an inefficient "green" fuel will only further turn the nation... nay, the world... into a bunch of metrosexual effeminate pansies.

Tofu can be edible if it is cooked by a very skilled cook in the Chinese style.

But really, is it worth the trouble? Hell, the first meat substitute, bread, is still the best.

Doesn't even have to be a skilled Chinese chef, all ya have to do is squeeze the water out of some extra-firm tofu slice it and soak it in the sauce of your liking, and fry that sucker up.

I suppose none of you like sugar snap or snow peas, or some roasted peanuts at a sporting event either. Those are all legumes, which this critter also eats.

Yeah, and enjoy the taste of the sauce.

(had tofu last night in my chicken laksa. All it did was provide texture and help to fill me. More chicken would have done the same)

Yeah and skinless chicken breasts are almost the price of tofu now.

carnifex2005: Yeah and skinless chicken breasts are almost the price of tofu now.

Why buy skinless? Peeling the skin off a chicken breast is as easy as peeling a banana. Boning a chicken breast is a little trickier but once you figure out how that chicken is put together and a little practice one can skin and bone a breast in less than a minute.

You might want to leave the skin on.

The skin has all the fat and flavour. Leave it on, cook the chicken then take it off if you don't want it. Boneless battery chicken breast has even less taste than tofu.

OK, I love that dish. Especially the pork, sauce and fungus. But I doubt if I closed my eyes I would notice if they took out the tofu.

I tried making it with about triple the pork once. It just wasn't right. You need the tofu to act as the background for the rest of it, or it's just too rich and chewy.

I like my tofu fried in some sesame ginger sauce until it is brown and has texture on the outside.

That's about the only way I know how to cook it, though I want to try making dango this weekend...

I suppose. But you need to be careful you don't put too much or it just slides down without a chance to enjoy.

Heading out now. Will probably have tofu for dinner. Kind of hard to avoid here in Tofu Central.

The other healthier ways of eating soy are tempeh and doenjang/miso. Fermentation reduces estrogen and other harmful anti-nutrition substance. Soy sauce is basically a fermented product, so it has no problems.

Not everything is tofu when it comes to soy.

FTA: Unfortunately, the bug also eats legume crops, especially soybeans.

The bug has tentatively been identified as the bean plataspid (Megacopta cribraria), a native to India and China.

The first time I ever laid eyes on tofu, it was a raw cube. It struck me as sinister, quivering. It looked about as edible as wallpaper. That moment was like being traumatized by wrinkled old-guy sack in the locker room at a public pool. Old guys will just stand there naked and talk, like they aren't violating every rule of common decency this side of a gorgor post. They don't give a shiat, and neither does tofu.

Kierkegaard's Pseudonym: God Man'll sort all this shiat out.

Generally I don't have to DEhydrate my food before I eat it. Tofu is bland and vaguely crap tasting.

I stopped reading after "eats kudzu."

Bring the little sucker over, when it eats all the kudzu find something that eats it, and so on and so forth.

Press it first - improves the texture, IMHO, and sucks up pretty much any liquid-based flavoring.
